Morrison reminds me of a Ladson or an Osborne type.

Interesting comparison given both have a different set of skills. Ladson had elite foot skills and Osborne was a tough mongrel.

I'm not sure Morrison displays either set of skills.

Or it really shows how far behind Geelong we are
We beat Geelong last year even after losing Reeves after 1/4. Absolutely dominated them in the middle when Reeves was rucking.

Also had periods of dominance against Sydney but couldn't last all game. A few times we where 2 goals up half way through the last quarter and lost last year.

Not sure if you've missed the last three years of Worpel's career, because Ward, Nash and Finn have already gone well past him. All three offer things that Worpel simply doesn't.

Sam does appear to be ruthless. Which is why Worpel - an average paced contested midfielder with one trick, that offer zero versatility and is a poor kick, may continue to be in trouble.

Worpel is the one that's going to have to impress this off season. And last week at training (granted it was one session in isolation) he wasn't up to much, whilst Ward, Finn, Nash and MacDonald all were more impressive during that session. The latter two were clear standouts, whilst the former two cut their drills short to do some extra hard running.
Worpel's skill set isn't one that will impress at training. If he is going to be best 22 he needs to show what he did in his first few years. It's his attack on the ball that will get him in the side. He needs to be the hardest player in the competition at going for that ball and 2nd efforts. That is how Brad Sewell made his career and it is how Worpel must. He will never compete with Finn or Ward for running capacity. He will not compete with Morrison, cmac, day or McKenzie for ball use.

And he won't beat jai or Stephens busting away from the contest.

But he could be the best at getting to the ground ball and dishing it out. Ripping it from an opponents hands etc..he needs to be bottom of every pack and handing the ball to the umpire for every ball up.

Morrison is more a tim Clarke or Stephen Greene type to me.

People forget that Osborne could take speccys, kick goals from the boundary, tackle and play as a lead up forward.

Ladson was a reliable rebounding defender with great skills, toughness and game sense. Current comparison to Ladson would be Josh Morris.

To me puopolo and Osborne were the same type of players but poppy had more speed and added that forward pressure.

I think our forwards have really struggled without having smalls that can jump on heads and run like the wind. Brockman is key here.

I agree that Morrison is the Clarke/Greene type. However I rate his higher than either. Whitecross might be a better comparison in terms over overall ability.

Osborne was a fan favourite because of his aggression and the excitement factor when he went for a speccy. However, he was nowhere near Puopolo when it came to forward pressure and scoreboard pressure. Puopolo also held a higher proportion of his speccys.

And both don’t survive when we starting moving high up the ladder.

I like this.

Agree, but Morrison is a very good decision maker. As I have said elsewhere, we would not be having this conversation if he was quicker, but then again, would he have lasted to our pick ??

If Morrison had wheels he would probably be our best player, sadly not to be but still super valuable to team, gameplay and standards for Sam

Can we have a thread that doesn't devolve into "100 reasons why Morrison won't make it?"

Spot on; and just a note that Hawthorn actually had a better win/loss ratio when Osborne was in the side. From memory he came down from Brisbane to try his luck in the VFL before being rookied by us. He and Poppy (my all time favorite) were speculative pics who became rippers ... Is Brockman really the type of kamikaze-madman who will take hold of this baton, if not then who amongst the current group ...??

Brockman is the type to jump on heads and run like the wind. I don't think he will be a tough pressure player.

I think some people forget just how talented he is. In his first pre-season he was tracking well before injury. Brockman could be the missing piece of the puzzle the forward-line has lacked the last three years.

My point was that Geelong’s midfield is better than ours. We won that game off half back not through midfield dominance.
