Weren't expecting this after midnight were you?

Apologies for the delay folks. Was busy at work and then caught up for dinner with some friends. Anyway, here we go...

It was a cold and grey morning down at Waverley with a reasonable breeze and occasional bouts of sunshine.

Once the boys warmed up it was non stop activity all over the oval for 90 minutes. Given it was my first session it took a while to get my training eye in and I reckon it will be another session or two before I am at full viewing fitness.

My major observation of the day overall was the level of enthusiasm and noise amongst all of the players and coaches. It's obvious how much they are all enjoying being out there.

No shows, as far as I could tell were Impey and Jeka. Jeka sat and watched on the side-lines, I think because he tweaked but Impey was nowhere to be seen.

As far as the new guys go, I was keen to see if the hype around Weddle is justified, and it surely is. The man is everything that other training reports have said he is. He could be anything.

All of the new guys look like they can play, particularly liked the look of Bailey Macdonald, Hustwaite and of course Mackenzie.

Newc was in beast mode all morning dominating wherever he went. Still find it hard to believe that we got him for almost nothing. His highlight of the day was reading the tap from big Ned Reeves, taking clean possession, spinning 360 degs to avoid the tackler coming at him, then dishing off to a teammate with precision. All without leaving the centre circle.

Reeves had a good day both in the ruck and around the ground.

Nash had a great run down the middle with two bounces, handballed off then kept running to receive again and deliver to the forward 50. Unfortunately the kick just missed the target, but it was a scintillating run down the ground at full pace. Nobody can catch him.

Conor Mac may be the most exciting prospect on the list in my opinion and looks primed to go up another level or two.

Morrison, as reported by others, looked really good and seems to be a real leader out on the track. Vice Captain material I reckon, assuming he is best 22.

Will Day's silky skills were on full display. He finds a way to weave through traffic and get clear, every. single. time. Just when you think he will get nailed by a tackle he finds a way though and always puts the ball to his teammate's advantage.

Hardwick was tough and skillful as always.

Love the look of Meek. Massive man, but really smooth mover with good skills.

I'm very bullish about Cooper Stephens. He is a well built unit with good skills and is hard to tackle.

Ned Long has definitely added pace. My fellow watchers, (Eldorado & houdinihuddo) agreed that he is noticeably quicker than he was this time last year and was looking good in general play.

Karl Amon is a smooth mover and a very good kick.

Ex-Pie Callum Brown really caught our eye. He acquitted himself very well in the contested drills.

Hoping to get down to next week's session before they take a break.

Was great chatting with houdinihuddo and Eldorado and Rusty Hawk.

I'm going to bed now.
Thank you! Great to hear the update on Long. Along with the addition of Weddle and Stephens, our midfield is transforming rapidly. Can’t wait for us to turn the table and start pounding the opposition.

Looks like we have found our Howe replacement. Welcome to the whipping boy club Nash!

To be fair, it seems Howe struggled for love from Sam too.
As have many players considered whipping boys on this forum that have consequently been moved on from Hawthorn.
It's not as if guys are playing lights out week in week out but suffer the burn on here.
From Shoey to Timmy to Howe and many others, players have been given plenty of opportunity by the coaching staff to turn in periods of good play into reliable regular good play. I suggested for the past couple seasons that both Howe and Sheila should not be getting a run together in the first team because they offered little firepower to change our fortunes while highlighting some of the issues preventing better team results.
They're both gone, and not because younger players were performing at such high levels in the seconds that they deserved the boot.

Happy to say some of my opinions that others deemed whipping boy comments (with ridiculous levels of offence voiced in their posts on an OPINION forum) are justified by the list decisions enacted by Hawthorns current coaching staff.

I'll stand by a recent one that other posters seemed to find treasonous.
Impey needs to find a level of fitness and desire to impact with real will and action or he too will have allowed a good portion of his time with the team to fizzle into an inglorious ending.

One of our boards great posters , his star shone so brightly for a brief moment until he fizzled out never to be seen again.

Am sure he had something to do with Cogs getting in JOMs ear at the wedding

Loved the whole report but this bit excites me the most. Despite many posters already writing the Irishman off for next year, I still genuinely believe that Nash’s upside is still significant

A guy with his size, speed, endurance and elite handballs is pretty much a unicorn in AFL. Really hope he starts to tear it up next year playing midfield, gonna be so much fun to watch
Agree, reckon Nash was a bit stiff this year.
Showed some good form at the end of last year as a mid, seemed this year every time he looked like getting a run at it he had to play as an undersized ruck.
Now that we have addressed our ruck stocks I’m hoping that can free Nashy up to focus on his own game and development.
Reckon he will surprise a few next season.

Excellent reports from all the watches this pre season much appericated. It's time for the x-mas break a few observations...

  • Day will be playing Midfield.
  • Morrison starts. His spot to lose.
  • Nash is still in the mid rotations.
  • C-Mac is ready for a bigger role.
  • Wingard will play fwd
  • 2x Ruck / Fwd policy . Reeves/Meek.

Posting my pre x-mas side in the rd 1.

You may not have been able to see but has Day bulked up yet as starting to fell he may never and always have the Xavier Ellis body shape.

Interested to know why you think this? Sounds like a bit of a stereotype to be honest
Because I've seen him play. His first game he launched straight up from standing still to bring down a big mark over a defender. Clips of him at training shows him having a huge leaps.

He is fast of body and mind. Watch the goal he kicked in the vfl where he intercepted in the middle of 4 players, found his way out and then kicked a banana from the boundary line 45 metres out.

This has nothing to do with stereo types especially when you consider i was comparing his skills to puopolo and Osborne. As small forwards that could kick goals from anywhere and takr speccys. Brockman hasn't shown the toughness of Osborne or the pressure and repeat efforts that poppy showed yet.

Long for mine is the suprise packet, might be one of the hardest trainer on the list and his kicking was a huge suprise last year.

It won’t be long if he continues with his growth that he will be playing alongside ward. I see him getting 10% better every year his in the system, which could end up being our closest current player to how hard Sewell worked.

Jai, Moore, long, ward, Lewis, Hardwick would be the standard setters on the track - probably forgotten a few but it’s bloody exciting and sets high bar for all the kids coming in.

He's simply not that kind of player at all. He looked very timid when he played during his first season, but he had a touch of class that not many possess. He is more like Breust than Puopolo or Rioli.
