Training 2022 - 2023 Off-Season and Pre-Season training Watch

I think Denver had Serong at one stage and well and truly beat him, Jeka didn't play in the scratch match and Blank was playing as Full Back at the opposite end to Denver
Thanks.

Sorry to keep peppering questions, but now that you have mentioned, how is Serong looking? And what about Fergus? Who is looking more likely at this stage?

What a day for training at Waverley. Blue skies, sunshine, warm with a very light cool breeze at times. Perfection.

Hickmott told us it was going to be a perfect day for a big skills session and that's exactly what it was. Brilliant session to finish the year with non stop ball based drills all over the ground and a 12 minute match sim towards the end.

This was brutal, high intensity session. They went full tilt, hitting hard, guys were hurting.

I'll start by awarding best on ground today to Ned Long, all of us watching agreed. An incredible display from Ned this morning. Whatever drill he was in, he dominated. Whether it was playing as a centre square mid or running up and down the wing, he was everywhere and in everything. His handballing was elite level and his kicks hitting their targets. His repeat efforts to run and receive then keep running to create an option were AFL standard. He delivered well to the forwards and actually slotted 2 set shots of his own in the match sim, one from about 55-60 metres out on a 45 deg angle which went through at the top of the goal posts. He won numerous centre clearances and with no fumbling was just cleanly handballing out to a team mat then running to be a receiving option closer to goal. In one piece of play, he read the tap perfectly, swung around and launched it to the square off one step where Breust collected it off the bounce and put it through. Ned is playing like a man that wants to get a new contract.

Seamus Mitchell is looking really good. He is really quick and uses his speed to weave his way through traffic and deliver accurately. He was responsible for quite a few goals during the match sim due to his ability to cut through middle and deliver to the forwards. Knows how to lay a tackle as well. Lots of potential, but can he stay on the park?

Out of the new guys, Bailey Macdonald was a highlight. He is a quick and skilful player and repeatedly broke the lines with his run up the wing from halfback. houdinihuddo likened him to Jayden Hunt but with Skills. Hustwaite continues to really impress as a tall midfielder. He has great skills and composure. Wil be a massive bargain. Josh Bennetts is another one that is super impressive. Not only is he quick and clever, he is ferocious with his tackling and finished with a long list of victims. Something about this kid tells me has he will make it. Cam Mackenzie is polished and composed with elite kicking skills. Weddle continues to impress although the one disappointing thing about him so far is his nickname which appears to just be 'Weddle', I mean come on guys, is that best you can do?

Newc was dominant again and continues to make football look easy. In a first, we actually saw him feel pain after he and Fionn clashed in a contest. Newc was in a bit of pain and possibly winded but Fionn looked a bit more the worse for wear. To his credit, Fionn was able to gather the ball after the hit and keep running but then needed a bit of help. All were okay in the end.

Speaking of O'Hara, he is looking quite good out there. Was involved in many passages of play and looks like he knows what he is doing. He is a quick evasive type.

Nash had a good day.

Denver had a very good day, probably the best I have seen from him at Training. He was reading the incoming ball perfectly, taking one grab marks, some contested, and then hitting targets with his kick outs.

Kosi had a great patch in the match sim with a couple of outstanding contested marks and a couple of goals but was then completely destroyed by Blank who had a very, very good day on the track. This is Blanks first pre-season as an AFL listed player and he looks like he is loving it.

Worpel is looking trimmer and moving quicker and more freely than last pre-season. He is definitely primed to take up the in and under role and was looking really good today. Noticeably quicker than he has been. He was actually breaking tackles and evading tacklers whilst racking up plenty of disposals.

Finn Maginess looks assured and confident. Kicking has vastly improved and must be close to the fittest guy on the list. He was playing a tagging role at times and pretty much kept whoever he was on out of the game while still getting his own ball.

Lewis owns the forward line now. He is the big dog and he knows it.

Jeka is looking good. Much more prominent than previous pre-seasons. His field kicking is up there with Sicily and he looks to be super fit.

Great to see Bramble has got his acceleration back.

I was really impressed with big Max Lynch. He really is good around the ground and held his own against Meek.

Breust is all class all the time, Moore the same as Breust

Morrison ran laps for what must have been over an hour. Impey walked laps, Cooper Stephens ran laps, Ward ran laps and went off early.

That's it until next year.
Sounds like the Premiership is a foregone conclusion
Other clubs may as well pack it in

The exciting thing about these training reports is that pretty much ALL of our current midfield group are showing quite a bit. In 12 months we will not even remember TOM and JOM. I am pretty comfortable with having traded these guys and moved on Shiela and Howe. Sure, we may lose a few games next year but I reckon there is a lot to look forward to with this new group.

PS I have a gut feeling that BMAC will prove to be a steal from the draft. Have a really good feeling about him after watching his highlights and considering he came from nowhere early in the season to get drafted.
Just remember, Tom and jom made almost all of these guys look ordinary in preseason last year. The current players are only playing against each other, not real opposition. Let’s hope their training form does translate into good performances though. Certainly can’t hurt to be doing well on the track!

This is true we r only really playing against one another true test will come in the practice matches next year

It’s almost certainly going to get ugly next year at times in the middle. As long as the boys keep fronting up each week and giving it their all in training the improvement will come.

It’s definitely exciting hearing about our youngsters putting their hands up. Just a wait and see on how it correlates.

Yeah I don’t want to talk us down. If newc, Worpel, stephens, amon, Finn, Nash, Moore and day all step up, we might prove to have a decent midfield next year. But you have to think its full potential will only be reached when guys like ward, MacDonald, McKenzie and maybe even weddle, which will probably take a few seasons. A lot to look forward to in our journey to greatness 😉

A lot of the guys we picked, like Bailey but not to the same extent, were massive bolters. Weddle and MacKenzie were nowhere near any serious pundits top 20 coming in to this season but we snapped em up quick.

It's a pretty good rule of thumb that if someone has made so much ground in their final year, they're going to be a higher ceiling selection than a kid who was highly rated in the years prior and might be a "steal" because they slid down the order.
Bang of Jagger. Late development is a great sign. Our two most promising players (newk and day) were examples of this.

An Axe report, better than crumpets straight out of the toaster smothered in butter and apricot jam.
Thing that seems most obvious is the level open playing field with all players feeling empowered to lay their claim, you can just feel the ownership and leadership bubbling along.
Scrumptious.

Everybody looks fabulous in December and January - especially when they’re competing against each other.

BUT the signs are still really good heading into 2023.
Everyone (the media, opposition supporters and a sizeable percentage of Hawthorn supporters) are assuming we’re cellar dwellers for the next year or 2 while we rebuild.

I think there’s a real chance we’ll surprise everyone, including ourselves.

First, look at the players who missed large slabs of the season in 2022 - Lewis, Bramble, Impey, Jiath, Day, Wingard, Reeves and Frost. Imagine the impact on performance if all, or most, of those players have a full season.

Then consider the players who are going to surpass the 30 to 50 games - that’s the critical threshold for experienced and sustained performance. That’s basically half the list that will pass that threshold in 2023.

Then consider that it will be Mitchell’s second year coaching. He’s had a year under his belt to introduce his changed game plan and to get the players onside.

Disregard the young rookies we’ve drafted because they probably won’t have an immediate impact. But the other 3 - Stephens, Meek and Amon - almost certainly will.

Last year we were 4 games (and solid percentage) outside the final 8. It‘s too optimistic to assume we’ll make the 8 in 2023, but it’s not at all optimistic to think that we’ll win more than 8 games.

I would add to this that in the last year of the U18's you have boys transforming into young men. A 16 yo boy's body becomes a 17 year old young-mans body that is better able to enact the players inherent skills. Point in case is number 1 pick Des Headland from years ago who was a boy in a mans body dominating boys in the under age comp. I'd suggest that if you added another year to the under age comp then others would have bridged the gap in body maturity and possible gone past him.

I love the look of the current crop.

I would be disappointed if we win less than 8. Think there should be enough improvement from within as well as the additions of Amon, Meek and Stephen to counteract the losses

I sometimes think the training reports are a bit too positive and would like to hear occasionally who is struggling. If a KPF does well in match sim obviously a defender wasn't so great. Same with defenders doing well
