The MCG crowds in the late 60s and early 70s are just insane to look at. They just packed as many in as they could.

It’s great to see St Kilda vs South Melbourne up amongst that list. Rather unexpected.

Massive Swans crowd had not played finals since 1945. St Kilda in the 1970's was like Hawthorn is today easily the 5th biggest Vic Club.

It is however the smallest crowd of the whole 1970 finals series. :D

Maybe not the right platform but is 23K capacity really big enough for Tassie?

I would have thought 30K would be the ultimate sweet spot for supply with room for growth

I think you could bank on large contingents of half the Melbourne teams, Adelaide and Perth coming over in big numbers for weekends away. 5/11 would be sell outs pretty quickly I’m sure.

It’s a footy heartland and I don’t think we can use current crowds as a reflection on future crowds for their own team.

Will be crazy seeing more than 90k at a fixture that got 20,320 back in 2016.

Well done Collingwood (and the travelling purple) fans for selling this game out.
I feel proud to say I was a part of that 20,320 who attended that night.

One of the coldest nights I can ever remember.

Only tickets in M57 and standing room available as of now for the Collingwood v Freo game. Will officially sell out tomorrow
Only standing room available as of 10:30pm for the pies v freo. Should get 90,000 Saturday and will break the biggest semi final crowd v an interstate club at the MCG. The current record was Essendon v west coast at the mcg in 1996. The crowd that day was 85,656

Absolutely. It was great fun, you felt like a hero just for showing up.

IIRC the weather forecast literally said not to go out unless absolutely necessary. In the end, apart from being freezing it was basically ok until shortly after the final siren when a massive rain storm raged for about 10 minutes just as everyone was walking back to the station.

The biggest Melbourne v Brisbane/Fitzroy Lions crowd in Melbourne is
79,796 M.C.G. Semi Final 1960 I doubt it will get that tonight maybe if it was a Prelim.

Melbourne V Sydney's crowd of 78,377 last week fell short of the record between the two of 80,292 in the 1987 1st Semi Final at the MCG.
The second largest Semi Final crowd ever for a Vic vs interstate team.

The Biggest Collingwood V Fremantle crowd of 45,383 at the MCG 2008 will be broken tomorrow should get 90,000.

I wonder what the record is between 1st and 2nd for biggest crowds between 2 clubs. That's an insane jump

The modern day record would probably be GWS & Richmond jumping from 35,968 to 94,258 back in 2017. However with the 2019 GF the gap from 1st to 2nd is now only 6k.

For records that still stand, Freo and Hawthorn's current best is 100,007 and 2nd best is 43,583. That would be hard to beat.

Going back a long way there would be a few teams who met in a GF who hadn't had any substantial crowds before.

Hawthorn/Footscray had a previous best of just 28,807 when they met in the 1961 GF which got 107,935
St Kilda & Essendon got 104,846 to their GF in 1965 when their previous record was 39,965.

MCC probably ensures 50k+ but I think 60k is out of reach.

Level 4 of the Ponsford has about 12 people up there, level 4 of the Olympic very sparse too. AFL members not terrible for a Dees

If you put everybody that is sitting in the Southern stand into the new stand which holds 55k it would be overflowing.
