Prediction 2022 Carlton Board Phantom Draft

That’s a long list of misses (although some have been pretty handy players)… and there hasn’t been a single hit for a tall in the first two picks since maybe Roughy in 2004. (By ‘hit’ I mean a player who ranks in the top 5 for his draft class, even Roughy might not qualify). The only time they collectively got it right is 2016 when Max King (#4) went after Sam Walsh(#1).

So I ask myself… is Aaron Cadman more likely to be the outlier hit? Or the statistically far more likely recruiting misstep?

I know that GWS traded up to get this guy, and I know they will almost certainly take him with this pick. But not this little black duck….

I apologise to those who believe that this phantom should be an exercise in predicting the actual draft. But I just can’t bring myself to select Cadman at this pick.

I’m selecting a midfielder. But, which one? Selection coming right up.

Pick 2, GWS: Jhye Clark, Geelong Falcons

Perhaps not the expected selection. I’m not going to attempt a full analysis of his attributes. You can read all you need to know on the afl.com.au, RMC, or even the Official Bigfooty Phantom.

Suffice to say the comparisons with Sam Walsh and Joel Selwood don’t seem misplaced, not that he will necessarily be as good as either (not many ever will be).

He has no obvious limitations. Some of the elements in his game which I like a lot are – he can free his arms and get the releasing handball away with either hand, he can kick long and penetrating, or lower his eyes and hit a target with either foot. He wins 50/50 contests consistently. He never goes missing in a game. His disposals are almost always impactful. He makes the right decisions almost every time.

In short if the question was “other than Ashcroft, who will be the best midfielder in this draft?” then there are arguments for six or more players. However, if the question is “Who can you GUARANTEE will be in the top three mids?” then for me Ashcroft and Clark are the standouts.

Also considered: Cadman, Sheezel, Tsatas, Wardlaw.

Over to you Ninja warrior

I LOVE the fact you chose the player you like and didn't just go with consensus or GWS's worst-kept-secret plans.

I am also a big believer in the theory that top end talls are boom/bust but top end mids have a much lower failure rate.

Pick 11 (10?) Carlton - Jedd Busslinger

Height: 197cm
Weight: 85kg
D.O.B: 11-03-2004

Jedd imo is the best defender in the draft. With an excellent kick, strong mark and expert ability to read the play he has become the premier key defender in this years draft. Having rated in every version of this years U18 All Australian team, Jedd can do it all.

While not exactly round 1 ready, needing to put on a few kgs of muscle. He could easily fill in as a third tall defender if our historically injury prone current first choices (MM/Marchbank) miss extended portions of the season.

In the long term I see him as a best 22 KPD alongside Weiters in the backline. With the only other true KPD on the list being Young and Durdin, he also fills a need.

I was tossing up between Busslinger, Ginbey and Hollands. With Hollands being the safe pick. Ultimately I went with my gut.

I suspect we will also be the first club in the AFL to have ever had a Jed and a Jedd on the list.

bradfisher14 is up next with the WB.

Pick 12, Western Bulldogs: Lewis Hayes, Eastern Ranges

Key Defender
199cm/82kg
17/12/04

Sorely need a key back of the future to balance out a list full of key forwards and midfielders. Strong consideration was given to Reuben Gibney and Ollie Hollands, but I feel those needs can be addressed later in this draft or from within the current playing stocks. Good key backs are like hens teeth and I think Hayes could hold down that post for 10+ years alongside Sam Darcy. Keath and Jones aren't getting any younger either.

Arr0w you're up! :)

Pick 14 Melbourne: Ollie Hollands

I know everyone is placing Matt Jefferson here, and the Demons could do with some more firepower up forward, but they do have Van Rooyen coming through who Demons fans have been screaming to get played while the heirarchy have been content to develop. All reports are he looks the goods.

And besides that, i'm just not that high on Jefferson. Gives me more a Michael "Juice" Newton feel than a David Neitz feel.

So it was a toss up for me between Jacob Konstanty or Ollie Hollands. I really like Konstanty. Every modern team wants a Konstanty or 2.

But like with Carlton, i really think Hollands suits Melbourne. With numerous strong bodies around, it allows Hollands to go berserk more on his running game like a Max Holmes for example. Hollands is not shy to compete, and does so with relish from what i've seen, but his ace is his running power. He'll suit Melbourne's hard running up and back game.

And i have little faith in Lachie Hunter, so i reckon Ollie could have a spot on that wing sooner rather than later. A quality prospect for the running AFL game.

TENACIOUS up next

Pick 15 Sydney Matt Jefferson

195cm/84kg
8/3/04
KPF

Have been weighing up which way to go and Jefferson IMO just makes sense… With Buddy and Reid, on their last leg and playing probably their last year… Jefferson has the ability to team with Logan McDonald for the next 10+ years…

A lead up marking forward, who is an excellent shot for goal… Is rated as the second best KPF in the draft, but some believe on talent and a decent run at it, he could end up being the best KPF of this draft... Had an interrupted season with a leg fracture against Bendigo, where he kicked 3 goals with a fractured leg…

May sneak a couple of games, as a third tall forward in 2023 base on talent alone… However, will need to put on some size and strength to compete as a KPF at AFL level.

Others considered – Will let you know in a couple of picks :grinv1:

Brisbane Match

Pick 18 Brisbane - Jasper Fletcher

183cm/76kg
24/2/04
Outside Midfielder/ Wing

The Brisbane father-son prospect will add another dimension to the younger midfielders at the club with his ability to glide from end to end and use the ball in a classy way. Fletcher is the son of four-club player Adrian, but is only eligible to join the Lions, where he has been a member of their Academy over the years. Has precise foot skills and is trusted with the ball in his hands. Could slot onto the wing early in the AFL career.

Thanks Cal Twomey

Future picks deficit
Ashcroft - 153 points remaining
Fletcher - 730 points remaining

= 883 points or 2023 pick 20

Pick 19 Sydney - Brayden George

186cm/87kg
13/4/04
Forward/ Mid

This kid has just to much talent and X-Factor to leave on the table, if he didn't do his knee this year would have had him going top 10...

Sydney has good depth and can afford to let Brayden, take as much time as needed...

Isaac Heeney was in consideration when making this decision, he is IMO a far better midfielder than what's left in the draft...
Heeney will get unleashed into the midfield where he belongs, rotating with George...

Others - Hotton, Konstanty & Davey Jnr (If George and Hotton were gone would have bid)

Pick 16 GWS Ed Allan

Need to replace Taranto and Hopper so we're happy to take another midfielder. This guy seems to be an athletic freak and may well go higher than here on the day. Better writeup to follow in a day or so.

Blugazi you're up.

Love your reach for Ed Allan here. Would love to see him end up at Carlton. One of my favourites in the whole draft.
