I think most players these days are professional & disciplined enough to do the right thing away from the club. With modern day sports science, you would get found out real quick if you enjoyed your holidays a little bit too much.

Keeping fit isn't really being a professional footballer though is it? It's just keeping fit.

They won't kick a football even in practice for 3 months and then we wonder why half of them can't execute basic skills and miss easy shots at goal.

It's taking the piss, the whole league is a giant boys club.

Id be all for the NBA model

Longer season
Shorter pre season

Play everyone twice - 38 games (20 teams within a decade)

Start games from march to mid october

Pre season starts feb

Give them 2.5 months off and return early Feb with the expectation that theyre fit

Yeah, point taken, some of the skills of modern day footballers are just appalling. AFL players should be grateful they don’t participate in the elite football competitions of Europe. Most comps run for 8-9 months, including Cup rounds & International duties. On top of that, both the Euro & World Cup Tournaments are normally played during every second off season.

Shorter games are the key. The games are stupidly long and getting longer. Should be no longer than 2 hours from start to finish including breaks. AFLW is great like this. Easily consumable. Will reduce injury/fatigue. Will result in closer games. It's a no brainer but the "traditionalists" always win out unfortunately.

The shorter games in the covid year sucked balls.

AFLW and easily consumable are not two things I'd put together.

kinda like how the hottest chilli on earth was technically easily consumable

I would be happy with 20min flat quarters maybe some kind of time on in the last.

the games are too long now because of the unnecessary dead time - like the extended time after goals before restarting and taking too ****ing long to restart at stoppages. Fix that up and quarters would go back to 25-30 minutes. Cut half time down to 10 minutes as well.

Agree with all of this.

The half time breaks are just weird, they seem to last forever. Is this really optimal for athletes to cool down like this?

There are so many antiquated aspects to this sport that are just as they are "because" and that would never be the case if the game was designed from scratch today.

No collision ball sports have that long a season.
The season itself is gaining what 7 games?

Rotate the squads better. The main reason are season is set up the way it is a relic from pre professional days.

The players currently have 10? weeks off

Thats excessive imo, have squads of 50 and get it done

This guy gets it

16 mins were too short in covid, i would try 18

Shorter games unlock so many more opportunities

Got a better chance of 2 divisions.
With relegation for bottom 2 in divisions 1 promotion for top 2 divisions 2
Both divisions play 18 rounds that 36 for the year combined.
Top 4 or 5 play off in the finals
Players get shorter season but TV rights get more games
