1956 = Not sure why the 1956 finals crowds were so high. Potentially it was the excitement of the upcoming Olympic Games in Melbourne.

1962-1973 = Golden era of finals crowds. This skews the Saints in the stats as they were a good side under Allan Jeans in the late 60s/early 70s. Finals started to be played more regularly at Waverley from the mid-70s onwards.

1978 and 1980 = The height of the Carlton vs Collingwood rivalry.

1990 = The only 90,000+ crowd between 1981-2006. The MCG underwent major redevelopments in the early 1990s for the Cricket World Cup and the mid-2000s for the Commonwealth Games.

2007 and 2010 = Biggest non-GF crowds in the finals since 1973 involving the same two clubs (Geelong and Collingwood).

2011 = Elimination final between two big Victorian clubs.

2013-2019 = Richmond become a regular fixture in finals. A little reminiscent of the golden era of the 60s and early 70s for finals crowds.

Whilst Richmond got 95,000 at the G.

Just confirming, is 95,000 more than 77,000? Let me know.

Also - your final against West Coast in Melbourne, 68,000 - Richmond have eclipsed Collingwood and you are wasting your time with your delusional posts. Join your mate pieslebo- he thankfully went away

Richmond is 2017 was a crap club for so long they just jumped on the bandwagon. Good to see you pick selective stats to support your narrative. Collingwood are 9.2 million in total attendances ahead of you’re tigers. Collingwood played in front of 77,000 fans in pouring rain. Collingwood have played in more 90,000, 80,000, 70,000 crowds then your Tigers.

Richmond 92,000 members yet only 28,000 attended the game on Sunday. Doesn’t make sense.

Anyway let’s get back to membership numbers

Collingwood v Carlton is the big one biggest crowd of all time and the biggest finals crowd of all time.

Every Richmond final at the MCG has averaged over 90,000 this century. This record is untouched- nor have Collingwood, Carlton or Essendon have come close to this.
Re Essendon, you'll need to specify whether it's the crowd number or the finals you're suggesting they haven't come close to.

Perhaps the increases in 1956 finals crowds were due to the 1956 Olympic Stand which probably increased capacity.

Collingwood's final against GWS was in 2019. They drew 77,000.

Richmond haven't drawn a home final of under 83,000 this century and all their finals have drawn over 90,000 in Victoria during the Brendon Gale era. That is remarkable

Richmond and Brisbane broke the attendance record in Queesland. Richmond and Essendon drew 60,000 in Perth and Richmond/Hawthorn (I think) have the record in Tassie.
The GWS game had Richmond going for their first GF in 35 years. If Collingwood, Carlton or Essendon were in that scenario they would also get 90+. There is a massive bandwagon in effect there when you have been so starved for success

The other MCG finals have all been against Victorian teams

But it wasn't the first time Richmond were going for the GF in 35 years. In 1995 and 2001 Richmond were also in Prelim finals. Both were sellout matches.

Imagine if the MCG could hold 125,000 today like 1970. I’ve often wondered what the Grand Final, or even ANZAC Day would really draw if unconstrained.

It’s the safe effect. All we heard from Tiger supporters when they couldn’t pull a crowd was “we’ve been shit for 35 years”. When Carlton and Essendon do the same, crowds will be the same. When Essendon (hopefully) bury its 6,400+ day draught on the MCG the reverberations around this town will be heard and seen in much the same way we experienced when Richmond emerged from the wilderness.

Exactly

Over 90,000 against North Melbourne is unheard of. Back in 2014 when we weren't a chance.

Cant help but laugh at the '...if Carlton Collingwood or Essendon...'

They didn't and they haven't, so 🤷

Jack Hamilton said in 1979 "if the MCG had 200,000 available seats Carlton vs Collingwood would sell it out".

In regards to your Bombers yes in 1982 Carlton requested the match be moved from Windy Hill to the MCG as the VFL and Carlton were expecting over 100,000 for the match. Essendon refused and the gates were locked with 33,000 cramed in to Windy Hill the Bombers won by 10 goals.

ANZAC Day is probably now the only home & away fixture that would likely pull in over 100,000 most years. There’s been a few of them the last 5 years thst were sold out very early.

I agree the Bombers and the Pies own it and it is an event on the calender. If it was Richmond, Carlton, Collingwood or Essendon they would easily get over 100,000 the game is like a final.

Good one

If you're lucky to play the Tigers in a final, youll get your first non-gf crowd in the 90,000 mark.

Richmond will get their 9,000th
Also we definitely played in front of a 90,000 crowd in the 50s. Back then we were in the top 2 for membership and top 3 for attendance until around 1959.

Not mentioning majority of that 60,000 crowd in Perth last year were Essendon supporters.

Did you combine this membership thread with attendances as last few pages one would think it's only about attendance's, clean up your act mate ;)

Respectfully disagree, the majority weren't ess supporters the vast majority at Dreamtime in Perth were West coast and Freo fans. Bombers home game and thus had more but geez there were a stack of tigers supporters there too. We also have very good support in WA

Need to get this thread back on track because it's only a matter of time until gopies hits the airwaves and mentions that the pies have 900 million more people through the gates, the only club to get 1.2 mill six times and a record 1.3 million in a season and to close it off It was raining in the prelim against GWS (77K) but the year before (2018) it wasn't and they got even less 72K V GWS in the semi

It’s a shame the Richmond fans don’t turn up when they aren’t winning

We weren't winning last year but still topped the home and away attendances when we finished 13th on the ladder. We also were 2nd for home and away attendances in 2016 when we also finished 13th, you know bottom 6 on the ladder. I had to throw in 2016 because you may be cheeky enough to say we had won premierships prior to 2021 but we were still shit in 2021 nonetheless. In 2016, we had won no premiership just prior, heck we hadn't won a final for 15 years. Anyways nice try.

Now you’re banging on about attendances😂. Anyhow back onto memberships.

Any updates please share.
