Maybe I'm on my own here....but why do people give a f*** about how members a club has?
Great post. The Swans are a watch for me too. I noted earlier post where the Swans numbers haven’t returned after covid which would be of concern and I’ve heard no clarity from the Swabs as to why..Interesting comparisons to 5 years ago to see which clubs have grown or stagnated. Obviously success brings in more members as proven by the Dees and Tigers growth. Figures from this year will slightly change but these are figures from this week with a few weeks left before the cut off.
Adelaide - 56,865(2017) 60,000+ (2022) This year somewhere between 60-64k. Peaked after GF appearance, stagnated or slightly backwards since.
Brisbane - 21,362 (2017) 42,000 (2022) Great growth with team playing good football.
Carlton - 50,326 (2017) 88,672 (2022) Huge growth based on potential success. Big fanbase to tap into.
Collingwood - 75,879 (2017) 95,500 (2022) Impressive growth through covid. This year playing finals footy no doubt a big boost.
Essendon - 67,768 (2017) 82,540 (2022) Steady growth. Expect to rise up with the Coll/Rich/Carl once playing consistently good football.
Fremantle - 51,254 (2017) 54,776 (2022) Minimal growth. Will we see a rise now they have a finals quality side?
Geelong - 54,854 (2017) 69,972 (2022) Steady growth for a rural area. If team starts to miss finals will this number stagnate?
Gold Coast - 11,665 (2017) 17,500 (2022) Not bad growth considering side hasn't been near finals. Now they are capable will there be a big growth?
GWS - 20,944 (2017) 30,861 (2022) Again, not bad growth for a non footy area. Next few years will be challenging if they struggle on field.
Hawthorn - 75,663 (2017) 77,111 (2022) Stagnated with lack of finals footy. No idea if Tassie members are dropping away or not?
MFC - 42,233 (2017) 65,915 (2022) Big growth that coincides with team success.
NMFC - 40,343 (2017) 49,250 (2022) Not much growth with side struggling onfield.
Port - 52,129 (2017) 60,547 (2022) Minimal growth considering team has been consistently in finals. Are they tapped out?
Richmond - 72,669 (2017) 100,498 (2022) Huge growth based on consistent team success over this period.
St.Kilda - 42,052 (2017) 58,901 (2022) Steady growth.
Sydney - 58,838 (2017) 53,580 (2022) Concerning drop in numbers. Will they bounce back now they have a contending team?
WCE - 65,064 (2017) 100,000+ (2022) Matching Richmond for biggest club in the AFL. Third season in a row. Huge effort! Nearly doubled Freo members.
WB - 47,653 (2017) 50,387 (2022) Stagnated since the GF win. Are they tapped out in the Western suburbs?
Sydney the main concern for the AFL. Where have the members gone? Is it that they don't have enough seating so why bother buy a membership if you're a casual? Or have the NRL pushed hard on memberships in NSW? Freo and WB look to have stagnated even though they have good sides atm. Same with Hawks. Minimal growth with onfield side struggling.
Brisbane has had nice growth though. Side playing well helps but double the number tally in 5 years is very good! GC and GWS are steady enough. WCE bloody impressive! Same with Carlton and Richmond! Dees sitting nicely in about 8th spot on membership tally compared to bottom 4 a number of years ago showing onfield success is huge in membership numbers!
And who on earth gives a shit about that?Financial strength of your club.
Clubs were giving family membership packages 2 adults and 4 kids instead of the 2 kids to boost numbers for a whilePet memberships are not counted by any club, the AFL has a criteria of what is counted towards the tally’s. View attachment 1466096
And who on earth gives a s**t about that?
It's sad enough that people live vicariously through the on-field exploits of a team, let alone the financial state of a club.
FFS.
I mean, do people have a poster of the CEO up in their bedroom? Or watch replays of the marketing guys landing a sponsor or signing a member?
Seriously.
Only a few clubs were offering 2A/4K on family memberships. I think the Hawks are one of only a few that do.Clubs were giving family membership packages 2 adults and 4 kids instead of the 2 kids to boost numbers for a while

From memory yeah. Not sure if they still are. Richmond and Collingwood wood has the one game memberships for a while as well. Gimmicky ideas make a mockery of the whole membershipsOnly a few clubs were offering 2A/4K on family memberships. I think the Hawks are one of only a few that do.
If you exclude the AFLW memberships, which is at 3,000 then 15% growth over 5 seasons in which we have gone backwards every year is pretty solid growth, especially for a club that doesn't have a huge supporter base like the Magpies and Tigers.Interesting comparisons to 5 years ago to see which clubs have grown or stagnated. We got well over 25k the last time we were in flag contention before Covid. How does the membership number indicate growth though? You can swap 50% of your 11 game memberships for double the amount of 1-3 game memberships and you have less attendance, less money but more members going off AFL rules.
Case in point, Freo look like poor performers over the past 5 years but get 30-35K to home games & this has grown to 40-45K this year with barely any local opposition fans. Similar size membership base like Bulldogs & Saints would be lucky to get 25K to a home interstate game. The mighty 100K membership Tigers could only get 25K themselves to a Marvel game a few weeks ago.
It's a complete red herring at the moment and shouldn't be the main measurement of off field popularity.

Hawks have done so for 40 years, long before anyone was counting membership numbers.Only a few clubs were offering 2A/4K on family memberships. I think the Hawks are one of only a few that do.
So they can make $50 and get your details for future seasons and so that their sponsors can direct market to you.The Dockers still keep sending me a membership email every week… now down to a $50 membership with no access to games … not really sure what the point of this is?
Hawks have done so for 49 years, long before anyone was counting membership numbers.
Did you know every kid playing in the YJFL (biggest in Australia) gets a Collingwood membership? Good on them.
If you don’t care about the numbers why read this thread?
It is absurd to think that Giants have more than half the members than the Swans do.Membership numbers are dodgy and rubbery, no two teams count the same thing, a lot of pet memberships counted by some clubs!
Crows numbers are real people and holding up during our winters of discontent rebuild.
GWS = 30,861 - is this for real? This many "members" but hardly any go to the games? Is this a proper figure or something invented to make it look like they've got a supporter base?
I've got a mate who frequently gets free tickets to see GWS and he reckons there's never more than a few thousand GWS supporters at their home games, often outnumbered by interstate club supporters and outnumbered every year against the Swans. They only had a few hundred Orange People at the SCG last week apparently.
That was a general comment, not directed at anyone in particular.Maybe because he's the OP

There are 11k juniors. I can’t find a link. It could just be Auskick which would only be a few thousand. Still looking.Legit? How many are we talking about, a few hundred, several thousand?
