I don’t think anyone on our list has done an ACL since they’ve been at the club, so we were due one.

Does anyone remember who the last one was?

Steele, Max and Windhager have done one each, but all prior to being drafted.

Was Gresham an ACL?

I was thinking the same thing - cant remember the player of ours it happened to.

Figured we must have a good prevention program set up which has contributed to that.

Yeah probably do, but leg gets caught in a tackle goes the wrong way and you have the full box and dice tear. Nephew was about to be picked up by either Werribee, Willy or Geelong reserves got his leg caught the wrong way on a tackle and did his acl, pcl and dislocated a knee cap. Couldn't get operated on because it is considered elective (he is not on an AFL list remember).

Interestingly his surgeon has told him pre op rehab considerably shortens post op rehab, so his time out of the game won't be any more because of the wait for surgery.

Fingers crossed for Coff that it is not really serious.

What was the thing Malcheski had a few years back, Les Mis or something where they grafted the ACL and he was out for only 3 months? Is that sh*t still in vogue?
Can’t see them doing that to someone so young

So all the pre-season reports were that Coff was in the best form over summer (with Higgins). Just terrible for the lad.

That would be Lars, I think.
I played cricket with a guy who had that done and he was playing again four months later (wanted to play sooner as well).
It seems the traditional reconstruction is preferred, and given he is still young that's the way they'll go

BJ took most of 2008 to come good.

On the bright side, it's a discrete period out if it is an ACL tear - just one entire season. He should be right for most of next pre-season.

Also, we have plenty of cover.
Goddard also did his during the season though so wouldn't have had a pre season.

As you say, Coff should get a solid pre season and a few practice games in before next year which will hopefully help.

Such a bummer. What a luxury we have Highmore/Wilkie/Battle though.

Still keeping fingers crossed it’s not as bad as it seems with Coffield. Could’ve happened to a player with a lot less coverage though, the wheels are far from falling off (for any doomsday folk out there).

In short, you need to be lucky ( high failure rate ).
It doesn't say much about it here , but i remember reading how the artificial fibrous material frays over time, and doesn't regrow like the natural ligaments. So they can potentially get you back on the track fast, but another reconstruction in the future is almost inevitable.

It absolutely made sense for Gemma Etheridge
If it was a 34 year old Cooper Sharman, trying to get the Saints over the line for their 8peat premiership and his 1500'th goal, you might say go for it , but not really suitable for a young fringe player.

Malceski was nearing the end of his career when he decided to take a punt on the LARS surgery so he could come back quicker, it might have been career over for him if he opted for a traditional reco with a 12 month recovery period. For a young player like Coffield who is no danger of being delisted you would definitely opt for the traditional reco as it has a much better success rate than LARS.
