Training 2022 Pre Season

These types of situations can also be the making of them. Giving them resilience and so-on. Think that’s far more like to be the case than it being a career-killer.

Jesus
A career killer FFS

I definitely don't want this to be the case, but a player having a down year and then a season ending injury derailing his progress and shattering his confidence? We've all seen it before.

I hope Coff smashes it in rehab and comes back better than ever but the St Kilda fan in me hasn't been optimistic r.e. injuries (or a lot of things) since Lenny Hayes' ACL did the same in 2011.

In short, you need to be lucky ( high failure rate ).
It doesn't say much about it here , but i remember reading how the artificial fibrous material frays over time, and doesn't regrow like the natural ligaments. So they can potentially get you back on the track fast, but another reconstruction in the future is almost inevitable.

It absolutely made sense for Gemma Etheridge
If it was a 34 year old Cooper Sharman, trying to get the Saints over the line for their 8peat premiership and his 1500'th goal, you might say go for it , but not really suitable for a young fringe player.
125 goals a year for Sharman not bad

Edit ... might have crossed wires ...

Lenny did his first ACL in 2006
BGoddard did one in 2007
Then Lenny did his second in 2011 ... I can't recall any after 2011

Dan Markworth in 2012 I reckon.

What was the thing Malcheski had a few years back, Les Mis or something where they grafted the ACL and he was out for only 3 months? Is that sh*t still in vogue?

LARS grafts aren’t used these days as they always re-rupture. Hamstring tendon grafts are still by far the most common in Aus but sometimes a patellar tendon or quadriceps tendon (ala Max King) is used as it can potentially give a firmer graft. Regardless, it’s 9-12 months.

We never seem to do things by half measure. ACLs, broken legs, hammies torn off the bone, debilitating back injuries etc.

The Saints curse strikes again. The pessimist in me has been waiting for it. Let's hope it's the only one. Somehow I doubt It will be.

Yes we are the only team to ever suffer from an injury. We are cursed, we are victims. Jesus

Shocking news for Coff. I had him in my starting 18 but fortunately for the club it's probably the position that is easiest to cover. We have no shortage of general defenders.

Hopefully the club gets him involved in some official capacity to keep him busy and focused this season. Maybe helping out with opposition analysis or something like that.

Im not sure I’d go quite as far as cursed but you seem hell bent on giving any poster who suggests we’re unlucky shit for it, let them grieve man. It sucks and it does seem we’ve had a bit of a streak.

Invariably you need good luck to be competitive.
Having pre season, season ending injuries is not quite consistent with the definition of good luck I’d suggest.

100000000000% agree.

Any footy fan who claims they won a flag without any luck is kidding themselves

Hayes won the best and fairest the year after he did his ACL

I'm starting to raise a few questions about our pre-season training regimes.

Last year our season was completely derailed by the major injuries to key players in the preseason.

This year it is happening again.

This can't be just put down to luck or the football gods hate us...

I've watched a few Ratten strategy meetings and he focuses on ... spots are up for grabs, who wants it, this spot is yours if you beat your teammate... surely this encourages players to take unneccessary risks.

Thoughts?

Melbourne's injury luck last year was huge. Now that they've won one they have confidence that they can do it again and could probably handle few players missing. The Dogs had the extra week break and got back a heap of players that made a difference. You need a heap of luck and if you read about one of our high potential kids going down it doesn't seem like the footy gods are lining up to hand us some of it. Hopefully they are sated and that's it for 22 though.

Last year the players did their own program and it was shit, this year we get a pro and lost a player. I think it's just random bad luck to be honest.
