I'm pretty comfortable that our defense is extremely solid. Wouldn't be getting too worried that we're going to fall down in that department. At the end of the day, Switta tore apart a genuine AFL class defensive line - plenty to be excited about.
Bingo VicDocker - for years people have been moaning that we have a solid defence (where are we going to fit all our defenders?) and no attack. We see signs of a small forward exercising some real attacking flair and the reaction is "our defence is crap".

I'm loving the fact that Switta took some players on and beat them - it's only preseason so I'm not getting too excited but I'd rather see that than dinky short passes inside attacking 50 which invariably lead to tears.

When we start seeing Switta, Henry, Frederick even Colyer taking defenders on and attacking the goals with conviction I will be a very happy chappy.

I thought that at first as well. I think a combination of the camera angle, tall point post, and mixed up goal post padding tricks the eye.
Same. At first I thought 'why are they celebrating a behind?'. I had to rewatch it a couple of times to make sure it was a goal. Then I had to buy a new box of tissues.

Hmmm, I’ve seen quite a bit of that bucket hat kid in preseason now and I gotta be honest, I don’t think he’s gonna make it 🙁.
Nah. He can tell Switta to stuff the pre season down the drain. I kicked a goal in the GF he ll probably say

Yeah spot on.

It's pre-season, this was a intra-club friendly, it's 39 friggin degrees out there. I respect the 'loose tackles / no left foot" comments people are making, but we need to keep a little perspective.

I get the scepticism and caution - people want to keep balanced expectations. Plus given the frustrations of the past, being cynical does provide a certain amount of emotional cushioning against future disappointment... It's a perfectly natural, understandable, and very common emotional coping mechanism. But there's still room for optimism here.

I have no doubt our defence will stand up come season proper. If that was an actual game, and it were a West Coast forward with the ball, the tackles would have far more venom. Given it was a teammate with the ball, plus given Switta's enormous promise and history of injury, I'm actually glad the defenders showed a little restraint.

Personally I'm just glad Switta is fit, clearly up and about, and capable of that kind of acceleration, evasion and aggressive decision making around goal. It bodes well for his recovery from that nasty injury last year, and for this season's prospects.

PS: nobody has commented yet on the blocking / shepherds provided which made the goal possible. Good team play guys!

Tough crowd. It’s a practice match & someone kicks a goal like that & the takeaway is b*tch about the defense?
Its preseason! The time for ridiculous optimism.

In the real thing he skins Hughes but probably doesn't come back inside taking on Wilson and AP - that of itself caught them by surprise so contributed. But Wilson is so 'armsy' in his defending - even when 4 points are on the line.

Confirmed - Wilson is my new escaped goat (gotta put a lid on that somehow).

I went to training this morning and watched a long match sim. I sat in the outer where there is now some grass on the slope and some small gum trees. It was very pleasant, if somewhat windy.

It is quite hard to pick up the players as many are in caps, have new haircuts etc, but I will do my best.

2 teams, purple and white. Purple seemed to have more of the best 22, with a starting midfield of our Sean, Caleb and, I think, Andy, although Andy swapped to white part way thru. Purple had Tabs, Lobb, Sonny and Sturt up forward so a significant part of a starting forward line.

At the time that I left things were close to equal on the scoreboard.

Caleb was the dominant midfielder on the ground. Brodie did a couple of nice things, including a good goal and looked serviceable. Meek in white held his own against our Sean and drifted forward to kick a goal. Switta had some good moments. Erasmus got a bit of the ball and looked okay. Western kicked a couple of goals and looked lively. Sonny looked fit and moved well. Connor kicked a long goal but had little of the ball other than that. Tucker got a bit of the ball, and looked reasonable.

Alex played on Tabs and Tabs looked quite good early. Tabs ran laps later in the match sim, looked fine, just management I would think. Rory rolled his ankle or something and did not come out for the last stanza (I left about that time). Brennan played back much to my disappointment.

No sign of Fyfe. Mundy, Treacy and Amiss in the rehab group.

On balance I would say there was a focus on quick ball movement and skills were ordinary in quite windy conditions.
great work thanks for the report!

I honestly thought he was done for months after that last game against the Saints - so glad he’s fit and firing. I’m going to focus not on the defending or indeed the goal - just delighted his body is in the position to make those kind of moves. 18+ games from Switta this season makes us a better team.
