Which puts the Suns in a pit of a pickle.

If we supposably have Suns academy kids coming in next year we’ll need the points..
but at same time u want to be able to get the best talent.. whether local or Victorian

Do they roll picks over to 2023 or don’t they..
Depends how highly the clubs values the academy kids. Walters looms as a top 5 pick with another good season. Reid and Rogers are getting talked about too.

Just imo but surely the Suns take these kids (assuming they have good years next year)? Must take good local talent when it's available. There won't be good players coming out of the academy every year - this year for example. Being able to cheery pick the best local players is an advantage that must be used.

The down side of other clubs wanting to trade into 2023 is we will need a lot points, so getting the picks for that may prove difficult.

Harry Lemmey looked a certain top 3 pick at this stage last year. Would surprise me if he goes top 20 after his top age season. I'd hate for us to move everything into next year now and miss out on talent, for Jed Walter to have a poor year/stop developing and we don't need all the points we've accumulated.

It would help to know what the list size needs to be moving forward. Mind boggling that the Suns haven't been told this yet.

Hard to know with the picks, as things stand we can still pre-list academy players, imagine if this got extended and we didn't need to use points at all next year? The suns currently have the below, and could realistically add 5 and and Brisbane's first. Obviously all those picks won't be used, so what's the best option - trade up or trade to next year?

Real concern for me is the names linked to us !
Heppell - well pass his best
JJ - injury plagued, Lazy, hasnt played well for ages
Tuohy Too old 33
Long - No obvious good features ,absolute no.

We obviously having trouble attracting real talent.
We're in the same boat as GWS, we have to draft in our A graders at this point. The only way to change it is to have a period of sustained success like Sydney. Then players are happy to leave Melbourne and join.

We are in the position where we can wait and wait and not worry too much about next year until next year comes. I think this is the best strategy.

We can trade a future first next year for points. We can also go into a points deficit next year if we need to and if the academy players are that highly rated (Freo did, and it has not hurt them). If we can add 1 or 2 future picks this year then all good but don't need to.

The one thing we don't have to worry about (but that some other teams do) is having enough young talented players coming into the system.

As usual AFL will make decision on Suns concessions during Grand final week. Ridiculous.

All seem like temporary solutions for our HB injuries.

Do we really need top players? Let's see how we go next year. A lot of players with a lot of growth ahead - Anderson, Rowell, Ballard and plenty of others.

Bringing top players would also affect our cap and retaining our existing talent. Anyway, we can't really attract top players unless we play finals.

Surely the club has been told behind the scenes?

I hope the club are pushing super hard for something on academy picks, even if it's just for next year it will be worth it.
You would hope so. I doubt that AFL would extend free pre-selection for next 2 years. AFL reviews our concessions on yearly basis.

We got so many picks that no free pre-selection will not hurt us really. If we get pick 5 (6) from Crows and possibly first round pick from Lions that would be 3 top draftees this year and still plenty of points for next year if we shift remaining picks.

You would have thought the bye week before finals would have been the right time to do something like this..
If they hadn't done it weeks - months before

Should have a crack at getting Hunter Clark too if he's available.

Made out of glass , always finds a random injury

I am leaning towards Phillipou with 5, and Busslinger with 7. Maybe Humphrey instead of Phillipou, a player comparison - best case scenario is Pavlich. Humphrey - Ricciuto, best case. JDG is what Cal Twomey says. The top 4 look good, Ashcroft, Sheezel, Wardlaw, Tsatas. If any of them fell to us I wouldn't say no. the rest is quite even, I like Keeler, Hollands, Hayes as 2nd rounders..

Have at it.

AFL trade news: Collingwood shows interest in Gold Coast midfielder Brayden Fiorini

Pies’ plan to make mid next Suns redemption story

Jon Ralph
Collingwood has expressed interest in Gold Coast midfielder Brayden Fiorini as a cut-price recruit who could bolster its midfield without breaking the bank like Hawthorn’s Tom Mitchell.
The Pies have missed out on GWS midfielder Tim Taranto, who is set to join Richmond on a seven-year deal but are still keen to continue adding to an exciting midfield with a blend of youth and experience.
Fiorini has a lucrative contract through to the end of the 2023 season that is believed to be worth more than $500,000 in its last year.
Mid-sized forward Alex Sexton is in the last year of a contract also worth over $500,000 next year with his six-goal haul in round 23 opening up the prospect he could have rival suitors.

I haven't seen any of these guys play so don't really know.
I did listen to the interview with Humphrey they did on road to draft podcast.
Had suggested that Humphrey wasn't even really recognised as draft able before this year.
Do you reckon that means anything?

Happy to take busslinger at5 but I’d understand if we don’t as we have Andrew and Brock already.

5 would be a reach for my current favourite in Bailey Humphrey, his strong inside, and looks good up front. Has strong hands and leads well as a deep forward, just needs to fix his goal kicking which is easy in a professional environment. The other bonus is he’s Gippsland captain. We’ve been drafting leaders recently so would not be surprised, plus Ainsworth & Flanders from Gippy have not been the worst picks.

I was keen on Neil Erasmus last season too so maybe I’m more biased on power mid hybrid goalkicking mids.

If only this draft had a laser foot like Hayden young or NWM. It would be an easy choice.

Also liking Phillapou & Hewett as we do need X factor or a versatile midfielder.

Missed the whole u18 champs with a knee injury which would of put him at the back of the pack.

He came 2nd in the Morrish Medal in the NAB league so has form this year. Bolter for sure, I’ve stalked his instagram and he loves being at training and has hit the gym all year.

Looks super dedicated and has a pretty strong frame already

Just a late developing prospect. Prefer late developers to early developers imo. More room for growth

I'd wanna talk to all players we're interested in at the combine but Phillipou and Humphrey (and Sheezel) in particular
