Looks increasingly unlikely that we will get hold of the Lions first round pick, not that it was a great pick anyway. I wonder what the club will do with all these pics we won’t use, perhaps trade them into next year again for lesser value as they have done for the last couple of years.?
By trading back year after year, we've effectively turned picks from 2020 into 2023

Mean while, by doing the opposite, Melbourne have traded into drafts year after year and have had players like Jake Bowey and Kysaiah Pickett playing essential roles in a grand final team

** No idea if these were the actual picks made, but the premise is true. We continually trade assets into future years. Whilst Melbourne use future assets to trade into the current year. Their assets are on field, ours are on paper.

They don't have a reducing list size though, and are in their window. We're not there yet so at least are maintaining an asset.

It looks like Brisbanes first isn't an option now, but there are other ways to use the picks. Hopefully the club gets creative, there are a few other clubs that may want extra picks this year.

They also don’t have a big crop of first round talent coming thru their academy either

Hope we are still chasing Tarryn Thomas. North's assistance package underwhelming, and probably need more picks this year to complete trades. They might just come to the party now.

But this is the whole point I’m making,
We could trade 2024 picks for 2023 picks to help us with academy picks.

Obviously with 5 second/third rounders we need to trade those and to 2023 makes the most sense.

I’m just saying the philosophy has meant our draft assists are never realised.

I don’t think Melbourne being in the window really needs to have anything to do with it.

If you asked all clubs, would you trade a 2025 first rounder for a 2022 first rounder - I think most would say yes. If you said would you trade a 2022 first rounder for a 2025 first - most would say no. This second scenario is what we’ve done to ourselves by constantly trading picks into the future.

Somewhat disagree.

We have traded hard for future picks in the last few years, but given our pre-listing of academy prospects I think it was a good strategy for us at the time. The extra picks this year are largely covered by not needing points for Budders, Davies, and Jeffries (probably three 2nds worth of points?).

And those academy 'assets' are running around on the field for us atm (when healthy!).

Ok, yeah I can get that take on it.

Personally, it does not make a sense to me comparing us with Melbourne.

Completely different situations, different lists profiles. AFL gave us too many picks as concessions including free pre-selections rather than extra cap. We did load with talent but then we still got too many picks and used them in salary dump, or upgrading picks and obviously moved some picks forward.

Suns are trying to mature and keep most of the list that is already full of talent, and not bringing 5-6 draftees and start cycle again. We got assets already, need just a bit more maturity while complementing with role players and/or get 1-2 mature top players if possible (when playing finals). Bringing more and more top picks, we will just follow GWS - persistent problems with a cap, players leaving after 2-3 years.

Melbourne were able to attract top mature talent (Lever, May), they went for Pickett, Bowey to complement a list which was ready to compete for the top.

Yeah I think you really have to keep in mind the pre-listing of academy prospects when discussing our trading for future picks. Players we were able to pre-list:

2019 - Connor Budarick, Malcolm Rosas, Matt Conroy
2020 - Alex Davies, Joel Jeffrey
2021 - Sandy Brock, Bohdi Uwland

Now obviously there's still a bit to play out with their development but I would say at least three of those seven players are best 22 right now when healthy. To get pre-draft access to three best 22 players over a three year period is a pretty big advantage and certainly a good reason to trade your later picks into future years knowing that the academy pre-listing concession can be taken away at any point that the AFL determines suitable.

We highly overrate our academy players. In 12 years the best player we have produced is Jack Bowes.

Need to keep hitting the draft at this point while the culture is good and the list is stable as getting quality young players coming through on minimum coin the first couple of years to balce the TPP that either become best 22 or at worst retain some trade currency.

Try to get some decent role players on fair coin and hopefully we can be competitive and in a position to attract a big fish in the next couple of years.

Thoughts on this year's draft? Assuming we get 5 from Adelaide, would it be worth trading up to get Wardlaw? Or better to just use 5 and 7?

Re: Academy players - you are probably right they are over rated. From memory both Davies and Jeffrey were seen as end of first round picks though. Is it reasonable to expect as AFL's popularity grows in QLD the chance of getting an A-grader or two through the academy must increase?

Are we talking to Port about a better deal for Rankine then if Crows don’t hand over pick 5 absolutely.

There’s only 2 clubs in SA

And luckily enough only 2 clubs in QLD..

The likelyhood of it happening is of cause slim.
Port won't pay him what the Crows are offering
If the deal doesn't get done he'll stay IMO
He might secretly be hoping it falls through so he can blame the Clubs and be able to genuinely tell his family he tried but still gets to stay here
Might be a bit of wishful hope casting but you never know

Isn't too late to offer a new contract after trade period has started? When the deadline

RE Academy Players - you would hope it will be getting better. I just need to see these kids against their contemporaries showing they are guns and us not having to squint and cross our fingers and hope they are.

I like Wardlaw but not desperate for him given our current midfield. I like a few of the players around that 5 & 7 mark - Cadman (if he fell that far) Clarke, McKenzie and Bussingler.

If we decided not to get Bussingler early and we're using a late 1st rd pick I think Lewis Hayes would be a solid pick as a key defender who can defend, mark and kick. Alternatively Hollands would be deserving if he was still there.

Can't see us taking Cadman even if he is there at 5, with Walters looking the goods next year.

Busslinger seems like an interceptor, which we probably have covered with Ballard and maybe Andrew if he stays in defence. Be interesting to see who is picked. Hopefully two guns who develop quickly!

Apparently is a bit of Jeremy Cameron like and can find the ball up the ground and play key back. Like a better version of Jack Lukosius
