Bit sad but not surprised. Can't be paying reserves players 500 +. I can see the melts already when we get nothing in the return for these guys but I'm starting to see the big picture. I am wondering if we have a big name in sights for this year still. It could be a massive amount of salary off the books so we either pay some guys 2 years worth next year or bring in someone of top quality

Definitely. So far only Long. Besides Rankine, if Bowes, Fiorini, Corbett and potentially Sharp leave, surely a couple got to come in or we front load current contracts as part of extension (Rowell, Anderson hopefully). Still no contract news on Burgess, Markov. Although a lot of players is entering 3rd, 4th or 5th year increased contracts - Rowell, Anderson, King, Sharp, Hollands, Luko, Jeffrey.

In 2023 - Sexton, Day, Thompson all of the book.

Interesting times.

The problem is that we already have quality guys it’s just our coaching staff don’t get the best out of them. It’s already been mentioned in this thread but the Brodies, 2MP, lyons and Scrimshaws We would all be clapping our hand together if they were coming to us as free agents on long term deals .

We have the players but are shit at developing them

You're right definitely hurts the reserves midfield rotations

I think it was down to injury with Bowes.

He's has a pretty consistent run in the seniors until this season when he went down pre season.

He basically didn't have a pre season.

He was set to play midfield this year and could've have a breakout year like Ainsworth.

I believe he lost confidence in himself after that injury and it showed in the VFL. He couldn't put consistent games together in the VFL and had constant bad games. We gave him a few games in the middle of the season and apart from the Richmond game he was below standard.

If he wants to stay a Sun then he needs to get past Rowell or Anderson in the starting midfield.

If Brodie and Scrimshaw are thriving elsewhere and I have no doubt Bowes will do the same I think it’s reasonable to say that falls on the coaches not the pick

Could easily add Prestia, 2MP to that list as well

We've had a lot more hits than misses with developing players since Dewy came on board.
Rowell, Anderson, Chucky, Ranks, King, Powell, Budarick, Rosas, Jeffrey, Farrar, Hollands, have all developed or are developing very well. Yes we are losing Rankine but we have turned him into a better footballer than when he got here. We hit more than we miss.

Neither of them start in the midfield though, I'm assuming Bowes doesn't want to start on the bench. So if Bowes wants to start in the midfield, Rowell, Anderson or Touk needs to start on the bench.

Yeah this Bowes one hits different IMO. Asked to play deep defence as a distributor during our lowest point and does so without hesitation, taking him out of developing as a midfielder during his most important years. Cops a couple of injuries and then does his shoulder when he finally gets to train back in the middle and then gets asked to look around at other clubs because he didn’t hit the ground running from it?

Looking at the amount of players running around in the VFL on absurd contracts that we are trying to move on, either Craig Cameron is giving out fat stacks to anyone and everyone and has no control over the salary cap, or we are identifying players with potential and the coaching staff are just not helping realise it and they get discarded for little to no value the moment they think they won’t be stars. There are just far too many instances of this happening now. Something’s gotta give.

I understand we have to pay overs to keep players but it sounds like 3/4 of the playing list are on contracts that they just will never play to the level of.

Yeah probably puts Flanders up the order. Miller, Rowell, Anderson the main 3 with hollands, swallow, Flanders to rotate is a pretty good mix really.
If we played brodie then bowes is another peg back. Everyone seems to want to keep every player but not sure where they all fit into 1 team.
And prestia just no.
