Trade radio discussing something I that 100% agree with.
They say that a player (known quantity) is usually worth more than a pick (speculative talent).
They used Stanley to Geelong for pick 21 from the Saints as an example. Overall, worth more to Geelong than the pick, even if everyone thought that Geelong payed “overs” for him at the time. He was a ready named player who filled a key need.
This is why I was fine with the Weller trade. Weller was worth more to us at the time than a pick could have been worth in the future. We needed a player like him and needed the story. They also discussed that it’s irrelevant who the pick was and what player they become, as nobody knows what player would actually be taken at that spot.
As a more recent example I’ll use, Rankine is worth more to us than Pick 5, and should be worth far more to the Crows than that same pick. A player with 2-4 years of experience and proven talent should be worth more than a pick that could be an absolute bust. You know what you will get with Rankine with far more certainty than you would with a pick 5.
Obviously a first round pick just increases the odds of a good player. That’s all.
Disagree with the Weller trade.
We've passed on LDU or Brayshaw to bring Weller back so he could come back to his family and get wildly overpaid to do so.
Weller wasn't a missing piece and was never going to be the difference between contending or not.
If we had not made that deal we probably play finals this year with the quality of midfielder we would have drafted, and potentially be in a better position with our salary cap, given how much he got and the message it sent in that anyone who comes or stays at the club is required to be paid significantly more than market value.
Always wondered how much the Weller trade factored into the priority pick 1 presentation.
"Not only did we lose Prestia, O'Meara, Lynch and May, but look at how much we had to pay to get an OK player in Weller to come join us...we are a laughing stock!"
Then the head honchos and the AFL go "sheeeeeit, can't argue with that. Here is pick 1, plus a bunch of other stuff you probably would have got anyway, but that Weller rubbish is too much".
So if it makes anyone feel better, it was LDU/Brayshaw for Weller + the pick that turned into Ballard + Ando.
Every day of the Week!!!!!!!
If any Dog other than Dunkley was on the market - Toby McClean for mine. I know he has had knee issues, but at his best was a real A-GraderWingman weighing up Western Bulldogs future

Robbo is utterly cooked. Not worth it at all. I'd let Blakely play VFL all season though.Never been much of a mitch Robinson fan but maybe he's a player along with connor blakely that plays for minimum salary and gives good experience and depth. Those 2 replace bowes and fiorini and there's 1 million + saved.

McCartney described it as a “disappointing” outcome confirmed he’s held talks over the league extending the standard length of rookie contracts beyond two seasons.
“It is disappointing, it’s a reality, we just have to work with it now. It looks like it’s leaning that way with Geelong and we’ll sit down with Andrew Mackieand thrash out what we can get done there,” he said.PLAYERCARDSTARTAndrew Mackie

“Two years, that is really disappointing. No doubt there has been conversations had for a while and the AFLPA is involved, but our conversations with the AFLPA are around that fact. Those first-year draftees, the two-year standard contract needs to be longer, that’s for sure.
“What we’re getting also is there’s an explosion in player salaries third year when they become open market. You look at ourselves and Gold Coast and maybe some other clubs who’ve had multiple early picks, what happens is you do have to pay a premium in that third year to retain the player.
“That’s fine when the players are performing and you’re paying for production, but players develop at different rates.
“The challenge is you’re in a position where generally you’re having to pay top dollar just to retain the players. Ultimately that puts pressure on your salary cap as well.”
It looks exciting best 22 to me. Pretty much the opposite of diabolical. How we got to this diabolical list
Well, he better get used to it. He will be under the media microscope from now on.Jeez, Rankine was just in the news.
As he arrived back from S.A reporters everywhere at the airport all asking him about if he saw the Crows etc few other questions..
Rankine looked like he was about to cry.
Didn’t say a word.
A lot of fans ignore this fact. We got 9 first round picks in the last 4 years with this 3rd year jump. To bring another let's say 3-4 this year is not a solution, just asking for trouble down the track.“What we’re getting also is there’s an explosion in player salaries third year when they become open market. Stay in SA, Rankine. I don't want you here.Jeez, Rankine was just in the news.

Could it be possible we are clearing enough space for a de goey?
