SUN’S TALKS PROGRESS

Victorian clubs chasing Gold Coast midfielder Sam Flanders might be rebuffed as talks continue over a four-year deal.
The 22-year-old from Fish Creek in Gippsland finished the year with a superb fortnight, racking up possession tallies of 36 (five clearances) and 29 (two goals).
The deal is not done yet but the Suns believe they are in a good position on that deal given he is getting serious midfield time in a team about to welcome Damien Hardwick.

Elijah Holland could move back to Melbourne despite being contracted, while clubs will surely ask about Chris Burgess (contracted to 2024) given his 51-goal VFL season from only 17 games.

SUNS ACADEMY STOCKS RISE

No wonder Damien Hardwick believes the Suns have 80 per cent of their talent needed to win a flag on their list given the perfect ruck succession plan.
The Suns will secure 202cm Gold Coast academy ruckman Ethan Read with an early pick, but many good judges believe he will start his career as a centre half back.

The most hyped ruckman in the VFL this year is Ned Moyle, who was taken by the Suns in the 2021 mid-season draft.
He is still only 21 0 and played two AFL games this year but has totally dominated the VFL so by the time Jarrod Witts hangs up the boots he will be ready to take over the No.1 ruck role.

By then Read can hand him support but might also be playing as a defender who can succeed Sam Collins, a hugely popular key defender who gives his all but turns 30 next year.

Gold Coast will secure key position forward Jed Walter and 172cm Touk Miller clone Jake Rogers but will also secure a fourth Suns academy selection.

Palm Beach Currumbin’s Will Graham is a 186cm midfielder who will likely go later in the draft but the Suns would like to draft him.

To be clear, I have no problem with taking 3 highly rated academy kids. It’s very exciting for us and QLD AFL and I’ve watched all three closely this year.

But we do the same thing every year, taking top rated kids, and expect different results, wondering why our competitors rise while we don’t. No matter how highly rated, draft picks are always speculative. There is risk, and time, required.

Now we have a new coach, again, and we hope things will be different. A lot of hope rides on Hardwick.

I love all our players, but we just seem to be lacking, and I think our lacking is due to more than a coach and a couple of highly touted academy kids. There are fundamental holes in the list that these three academy players may not fill (though we all hope they will).

It was just a (controversial) musing, is all.
You and all others make valid points.

Where does improvement come from?

A lot of people put blame on Dew, the team plan, list underperforming. Will Hardwick push team to make that final step, improve game plan, consistency, skills, mental side?

Once the team makes a string of wins, confidence usually goes through the roof and the team can get on the roll. Look at Blues. They looked hopeless during 8 consecutive losses and now a lot of people have them seriously challenging. And we did have them on plate at HBS. we are not as bad as some people suggest.

Will inside growth be enough? We have a lot of players who should progress as they get more mature and with more experience but it's not as simple and it does not happen linearly and certainly not for all players.

No question top finals experienced A grader(s) would help enormously. Is it Martin? Or rather somebody else? There are some players on Tigers list I would prefer more. Let's see what Dimma can do, can he attract someone. Dimma's first job is to re-sign Flanders. Time is ticking. Extending Ben during off-season would be handy too.

For me it's really non-negotiable that we draft and keep our top academy kids. They are/will be the base for our long-term success. I believe we can get top 3 academy kids and at the same time A grader if opportunity arises this off-season (I doubt it will happen).

It is extremely even competition. Every team usually improves. I have hard time to see who we would jump in top 8. And that's not even considering teams that did not make it like us and will be aspiring for finals too (Freo, Crows, WB).

I have bitten my nails so much they are up to my elbows waiting for this deal to get done, the longer it drags are less likely I feel it is
its now that far down the track, it would be a surprise if it doesn't get done at this point. Just a matter of time now.

Cal twomey suggesting chol as possibly gettable. Twomey one of the more reliable journos and wouldn't think he would bring up his name if there was no noise around it. Sort of makes sense though.
