Same rule applies to this thread as other years, keep it on topic about the kids.
Don’t get bogged down on what other teams might do or where they will finish.

Trade speculation belongs here.

That's also where you can discuss your mock drafts or pick trades.

Any McCabe, Dear or Maginness talk belongs here.

Curtin is such an exciting prospect but it is very risky.

Comparisons to Bontempelli get thrown around a lot but that's what Curtin can be as a midfielder. 196cm, silky skills, fantastic aerial game, good athlete without possessing exceptional speed. Day, Newcombe, Curtin, Nash, Mackenzie & Ward is a supremely skilled and versatile core if all reach their ceilings albeit one you have to surround with leg speed. Unlike others I also believe he can be developed into a quality CHB.

There is significant boom or bust potential though. His skill floor is that awkward Jarrod Brander type. Combined with being from WA, Watson is the safer (and still extremely talented) choice.

We did that with Brocky and it backfired.

Well if Curtin doesn't have twins at the age of 19 it might help our cause.

If Harley Reid was from Brisbane nobody would be fretting about drafting him. If Curtin is rated as the better talent and we want him I don't think we are going to pass on him being interstate. Just like we didn't with DGB or Will Day.

arguably broke even

taken with pick 46 in 2020 and traded this year for 44 and 63 while a shallow draft Hawthorn needed those points

For every Brockman or McPharlin though there is a Stratton or a Bateman that didnt request to go back to WA.

It is more likely than unlikely that he will need to move right now so someone will need tp pull the trigger on backing themselves into convincing him to stay

Highly doubt a pick 1 would be traded on the night.
comes down to West Coast and the bids they will get

they could hold the pick and wait until they are on the clock to wait and see if North get desperate or if a team like Melbourne think they need to make the big splash and throw everything in and when it doesnt happen then they can make a call

they wont get those type of offers today

It seems we're down to Wiz or Curtin. From 5pm we'll know there will be no trade for pick 1.
If it hasn't been said, why do you think today is the deadline? I would have thought the processing of a trade on the night would be huge for ratings - not that this is my focus at all, but it is for the AFL. Something that would have been worked out in the weeks beforehand won't hit in the same way.

Sorry, I have not kept up with this thread.

Watson can play one position. An important position, sure, but small forwards aren't impossible to come by - hell we picked up one of the best small forwards of the last decade in the rookie draft. Even a fairly good small forward can get the job done if you have the other pieces around them. The Cyril comparisons couldn't be more moot because Watson doesn't have Cyril's defensive game. Sure, the attacking excitement will be fun to watch - but I almost had more fun watching Cyril take off after a rebounding defender and making them kick right to one of our players in a mad panic or getting mowed down in a clutch tackle. If Watson was a direct Rioli clone then sure it's a no-brainer - but he's not. Granted Watson might develop more of a defensive game.

With Curtin he could be anything. He's a KPP size player who can intercept and play through the midfield. Apparently has great leadership qualities also. His shortcomings aren't that detracting and can be worked on. He's already capably played against adults in the WAFL. I don't think he is remotely a 'safe' option - I think he is a bloody amazing option and if he is available when we are ready to call out a name I hope we pounce.

Having great trouble resisting the urge to call him Shower... but does Curtin have the pace to play AFL as a key back who'd need to close up space with a leading opponent?

His agility is incredible. Quick of mind and foot there.

But is his pace good, or is that the one knock on him?

So North's plan is to go into next year with one AFL standard KP player (Larkey) and one very average ruck (Xerri) after throwing McKay amd Goldstein out the door and only draft mediums and mids early. Not arguing with you but the Shinbeggars look like setting a new standard of tanking next year

I can’t find confirmation of their list size allowance for 2024. It was 48 in which case yes easily, right now they have 32primary and 4 Cat A and 2 cat B so 6 maximum which covers their main picks but not the late ones. They may not need them anyway they can trade their 20s picks for a lot more points on the night.
I have Gold Coast blowing their first 6 picks on Walter, Read and Rogers, that means our pick 44 goes to pick 38 and 47 to 41 = 874 which equates to pick 16 for McCabe after F/S discount!
Bully's 4 picks then kick in for Croft as well as our two for McCabe, given each picked at 13 and 16 respectively.
Pick 49 = 42 , 62 = 50 , 63 =51 and 83 = 71.
Wow.
I wonder what MM and co have planned. mmmmmmm

It’s almost like watching a club push Isaac Smith (getting a Normie), Jordan Lewis, who else out the door with nothing to replace them. Heh. I would think it was a bit of history repeating itself if there was any connection between those decisions at Hawthorn and Norf today.

Are you saying north should take Curtin at 3 even if we don’t have him best available?

Can’t see him making much of a difference as a first year kpd myself

Would’ve thought it was about the career, not the first year, that was important
