Same rule applies to this thread as other years, keep it on topic about the kids.
Don’t get bogged down on what other teams might do or where they will finish.

Trade speculation belongs here.

That's also where you can discuss your mock drafts or pick trades.

Any McCabe, Dear or Maginness talk belongs here.

Tasmania should have the assets to pay for McKercher if they do try and lure him home.
Last I heard was that the AFL didn't want to have the new Tassie team built like GWS and GCS. It compromised the first round of the draft for years and made the two clubs too young and uncompetitive for too long. This time around they were looking at giving them picks that they will have to use to trade for established players.

If that ends up being the case then McKercher could end up netting his club collectively more than pick 1 if he's the stand out Tasmanian player in a few years time.

Obviously a lot of ifs and you don't want to select a player with the view to losing them, but it could end up working out well.

McKercher done for the year with a ‘medium term foot injury’ his coach said this morning.

Could we see him slide now and players like Duursma/Watson rise?

He will be out of contract. Will sign a two year extension after his draft two year contract. Then at the mercy of the AFL allocating compensation.
Unless the rules change, he won't be a free agent until 2029. You can be uncontracted and not a free agent, he'll need to be traded or walk to the PSD, but an expansion club abusing the PSD would be diabolical for it's future. Expansion clubs rely on trades to get value for it's draft picks, and screwing over clubs wouldn't help them. The AFL knows this, we'll get good compensation if he does want to go. He's a Launceston boy though, there's every chance he isn't enamored with a Hobart-centric club. Isaac Smith didn't head off to the Giants when they started up, even though he is a country NSW lad who falls in GWS territory.

It’s different for new teams. They will be able to sign any out of contract player and then the AFL will allocate compo.

Mitchell on 3aw said that our list needs both a key position defender and forward, crumbing forward and X factor through the middle. It would be great if we traded a future first to get an additional one of the three. Then added key position depth through free agency/trades. McCabe will take a while to have an impact. The loss of lewis at both the start of the year and the past two games shows how important a high quality key position player is structurally to finish off our improvements in the the middle. As a Tasmanian I'm a little nervous in picking up Mckercher, Tasmania will be looking at bringing in as much home grown talent as possible, particularly star factor.
So McKay Gresham as FA, draft McKercher and Duursma with suns first. Job done.

Except for the key forward. It's the biggest need in my eyes.

We know we'll pick up Watson/McKercher/Duursma, and I'd imagine Caddy could be in the frame if we could get our hands on another top ten pick.

Watson and Caddy is my dream.

Duursma is on some kind of hot streak right now. With finals spots on the line, he stepped up in a big way in this game to help his Power team to a significant victory over Eastern Ranges.

Duursma as a forward looks as good as Reid as a forward, just less physically mature/strong.
His output as a mid will increase as he gets stronger, but he should remain a forward IMO.
Get him!

Caddy isn’t a key forward he’s much more like a third, so with 2 early forward picks it’s one of Duursma or Caddy
With Watson I would think.
In time I think ramsden is the second forward hoping he plays half a year next year and then establishes for 2025. In the meantime Kozi another year and my dream is to trade back into the draft after McCabe bid and snare Archer Reid and let him develop to partner with ramsden in 3-4 years time. Having 2 legitimate forward rucks would be something!

He has some really classy efforts pinch hitting in the middle. I think he’ll definitely develop to be a very versatile player once he get into the system and improves his endurance

If Tasmania want to be a success, they need McKercher, Sanders and Leake, right age profile, dominant at the champs, just my 2 cents.

I've watched a few of Caddy's games and I think he is absolutely a key forward. I don't think there's a better pack mark in the draft. The Curnow comparison is spot on in my eyes.

The possibility of pairing him with Duursma or Watson up forward makes me positively swoon.
