I think this draft is deep enough that we should definitely use the 2-3 picks that we’ll have in the 40s-50s to roll over the bottom of the list.

Agree, the draft is deep enough. We have a history of picking good players in this range, the 40's in particular. Since 2010 we've picked Libba (pick 41), Hunter (pick 49), Dale (pick 46), Daniel (pick 45), Williams (pick 48). Arty Jones could be anything as well. We've had 3 misses in Pearce, Fuller and Cavarra though.

My only concern is, these picks may be chewed up by the Croft bid as it has in other years with Jamarra and Darcy. Getting Croft may not necessarily be the best option.

If we can get a third rounder for Sweet then hopefully our pick 36 + that pick would be enough to cover a bid for Croft.

Given GC's academy kids, I'm hoping our two picks in the 60's will move into the 50's. I just want to be able to draft multiple kids around that mark and let them develop in the VFL. It's an absolute must that we bring in 5-6 18 year olds into the club either through the national or rookie drafts.

We'll have to use those picks anyway if we use them to match Croft. The picks vs list spots rule is back in force for matched FS and academy bids.

I’ve sold myself on Caddy being that explosive mid/fwd in time.

Now I want to trade up to secure a Caddy / O’Sullivan double.

Then match Croft and get some speed in the backend of the draft.

Most clubs won’t be picking that many players. I think we will see a few of those names still on the board with our end of draft picks.

The depth of draft next year is outstanding for midfielders. I can see us taking best available in this draft and none of those being midfielders until our end of draft picks.

Libba and Hunter don’t count since they were matched bids, and the bids came considerably earlier than those picks. The hits were all Dalrymple - yet to be seen if we’re capable of getting much out of the back end of the draft with our current recruiting team

The point I was trying to make more or less is that you can still find good players in the 40's if you are good enough. Even without the father/sons, we still had a 50% hit rate and I didn't include Lewis Young in that who is at least solid depth for an AFL team. We just haven't had enough of theses selections due to bids and our depth has suffered because of it. Adding another father/son will chew up more picks in that range.

Yes the jury is still out on Milesi. I think he has a good eye for talent though with Gallagher, Arty Jones and Bedendo as later picks all look like they have potential. I'm a fair bit happier with him over Nick Austin who's later picks I never really rated.

Lachie Neale was a pick 58.
Yes there are good players available every year. Most of our 2016 backline were rookies/PSD/DFA types.

The jury is out on whether we can actually select the right ones but given the Cat B bargain of James O'Donnell, I'm hopeful we'll get at least one late pick gem.

Dane Swan went at pick 58 too, 8 years earlier. Both Brownlow medallists.

Hmmmm ... there must be something about pick 58. Let's hope we end up with it this year!

Any clubs that would be realistically interested in trading Brisbane's first for their next year's first?

Would be handy for us in the circumstances (if we want two picks instead of one by trading up).

Could then use it to trade back in asap after the Croft bid.

Most likely a club that backs themselves to finish high next year and wants a quick boost this year.

I could see Port going after it. They’ve always valued the draft in their list build, and had to go all in to get JHF in last year. They’d back themselves to be top 4 again next year so could definitely see them trying to bring it forward like Melbourne have a few times recently

I think best strategy is O'Sullivan at pick 10 trade out Brisbane first rounder, match croft bid use pick 35 and later picks, trade Brisbanes back in for as many picks around the 30s as we can get the draft seems wide open there freijah lual macauliffe Stevens all look good at that range , go dogs I'm feeling it, we aren't losing anyone important and will play much better next year go dogs again

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Current Indicative Draft Order: 10, 17, 36, 64, 66, 71, 84

The Western Bulldogs hold two first round picks, with a selection in the teens tied to Brisbane’s finishing position (currently at 17). Perhaps the most intriguing factor for Bulldogs fans is where a bid falls for father-son Jordan Croft on draft night. The athletic key forward told this publication this week that he is yet to decide whether he will nominate as a father-son, but assuming he does, a rival bid could fall between their two first round selections. Given the Dogs and well stocked for talls and midfielders as it is – even if they lose Bailey Smith – a player like running machine Darcy Wilson could appeal to fill a wing spot into the future. Alternatively, would the Western Bulldogs package their two prized picks and move up the board to pick a matchwinner like small forward Nick Watson?

Thank you

Wilson’s growing on me if we hold our picks, would be a nice addition to our list.

What do people think Hawks will do with pick 3? Probably best available you’d think but they have spent a few first rounders on mids recently - no key forwards this year which they’d love, need a defender but O’Sullivan would be a bit of a reach.

Is there any chance McKercher falls through to the GC pick? Ie Curtain/Reid to WCE/Norf, and Hawks prefer Duursma or Watson could it happen?

I badly want McKercher, he’d be absolutely perfect for our midfield needs

I believe if Hawks keep their pick it'll be pick 4 after Ben McKay Compo. They will take the left over of Mckercher and Duursma.

Wilson does look to fit us (both needs and pick), then Croft, then late first/early Second (trading Brisbane's first out and back).

Alternative to trading into an earlier first and only having pick 6ish and Croft.
I am starting to prefer the idea of simply moving that Brisbane 1st into next year and leaving it there. This draft doesn’t bat that deep, and we’d still be getting two 1st round picks this year. I don’t feel Lual will get bid on too soon, and if we’re worried we could probably just live trade with a future 2nd.

Wilson + Croft + Lual, plus whatever is left at the end (De La Rue, Freijah, Sanchez, etc) then take Chatfield late/rookie. A draft like this covers pretty much every area of need while still leaving us with two 1st rounders in 2024

Yeah I’m just hoping as unlikely as it is North don’t get pick 3 and Hawks take Duursma (should we get pick 4) - I think if North do get Reid and pick 3 surely they take a Duursma or Watson over McKercher again meaning McKercher slips to the GC pick.

Praying there’s a bolter over the u18s finals, a McKercher & Croft combo would be bloody good!

North really loves picking short mids when good players for other list needs are available.

Croft bids going to be interesting - bit worried about Essendon, Geelong & Crows to be honest. If he gets past them he’s probably safe until Saints at 13, am I right in thinking that pick will become 17 with McKay compo and 3x likely academy players before him?

That would mean we only need 820 points to match, could easily cover that by downgrading our 2nd for picks (+ our 4ths). Meaning we can do what ever we want with 17, I’d try to move it into next year and then move back in after a Croft bid to be honest, shouldn’t be too difficult
