Jake Lever is an intercept defender. You know, the ones who start the scoring chain. No club scores more from their defensive 50 than Melbourne, which is largely in part to Lever's intercept possessions. He's not a ''metres gained'' defender.
Intercept defenders are recognised across the competition as being arguably the most important defenders of all.
I'm not arguing against the quality of Lever or whether he deserves to be included in a rolling AA side of 2023. I reckon he is a very good player who has had an excellent start to 2023 and would be deserving of inclusion thus far.
I'm arguing against the poster who claimed that Sicily is a "chip sideways" all the time sort of player that racks up meaningless possessions, plays an easy role that any average player can perform and that he doesn't take on the hard kicks forward that lead to scores. The stats I used emphatically demonstrate these claims to not just be incorrect but almost a complete inversion of the reality.
