Is anyone familiar with what the roles are at stoppages/centre square?

I think from memory it’s sweeper, playmaker and defensive mid? is that right?

How would our mids fit into those roles?

There is also inside mid and outside mids as stoppages.

I think the sweeper and defensive mid are almost identical. Then the other two mids are more attacking.

Play maker is probably more outside.

Brayshaw often plays defensive mid or Sweeper. Not sure who else does.

Brodie and Serong are inside mids, with Serong having the ability to play outside a bit more.

I've agreed for a while now (after hearing or reading it suggested somewhere) that starting Brayshaw on a wing and then pushing him in to the stoppages around the ground by having Freddy or Switta etc push up from HF was the way to go. Our centre clearance performances against the top echelon midfield units this year was pretty poor. It was better when AB wasn't in there and while it was not by a huge amount, it can be improved. Adding Fyfe & JOM to the mix and keeping AB close by on a wing and utilising his 2-way abilities would seem a very good move. After the CB's he becomes tghe same player he is around the ground and we utilise others in rotation from HF to play the traditional wing role.

To that end If I see Chapman lining up in the forward 6 to start the year next year to enable him to push up to the wing after the CB I would not be upset at all.

As mentioned already, the flexibility we have to roll people through in that role would be immense. Not just Chappy but also Aish, Erasmus, Freddy, Switta, Wilson, Sturt. All who could easily fill other roles and then flick in to that one and be more than a handful and give a bunch of different looks.

Our new midfield coach should enjoy his new role. Plenty of arsenal to use.

I have a feeling that Sam Sturt will have a big year. He will be a starter from game one. In before Henry.

He’ll have to have a big preseason, we don’t often trade in new recruits to be depth players, Corbett will already be pencilled in as the Medium tall to play alongside Tabs and Amiss, having a stronger mature body will help Amiss and provide more pressure than Sturt.

I hope you’re right. If he is finishing in high in the preseason running he may be a shot, feel like it’s about effort for him.

I also think if he can’t break into the team as a fwd he could be a really good hbf with his marking and kicking.

Oh it could still pan out, but how's the shittery from Essendon?

A: Did you hear Freo have got Tippa interested in coming back?
B: No. Wait, what?
A: Yeah, apparently Justin Longmuire has been out to lunch with him and sweet talking him into a return.
B: Well that's good work. hmmm, Let's swoop in and tell him he's still contracted here.
A: Don't you think that makes us look like w***ers?
B: Look - a bird!

Good negotiating strategy from the AMT camp.
Freo: "We want to see how things go, so we'll just offer you a train on contract"
AMT: "Hmmm...maybe a fresh start is exactly what I don't need..."

Right - so Freo get him interested in returning to footy, so that he can play a Essendon.

What the * was the point in that?
whatever happens it’s still worth the small time investment on the chance we could get him.

at the moment all we know is from a small puff piece on a bombers fan site. And by the sounds of it he is still on their list - so of course they are in a better position today.

Really difficult to pick a best 22 for next year. Maybe went a little small in the forward line, but I'm backing Fyfe and O'Meara to provide some medium options, plus Jackson will rotate through.
No real ruck outside the 22, simply must grab one in the draft.

Why do we want tippa? Would we play him ahead of Schultz and Switta?
With both playing at their best you play Tippa ahead of Schultz every single time I think.

He applies similar pressure but is much more dangerous around goals and has the potential to turn a game with either facet of his game...at his best.

The real query is whether his best is beyond him now or whether he has dropped a level or 2 and now is just as good as Shultz or not as good. In this case he's probably not worth a spot on the list let alone in the team.

He's definitely worth a look in the pre-season though. Ideally you'd want to see a bit of him at Peel and go the MSD option if he's going well there. But that needs a lot of other things to break our way and the rest of the league, especially Essendon, to just ignore him so I don't think it's a realistic option.

I don't think it's unfair of the Bummers to have a long chat with him though. He's on their list and they'd be silly to just let him leave without a chat. It doesn't mean they will stand in his way, we didn't for DevRob back in the day, or Viv and other teams have been generous too when circumstances suit. If he's adamant he could only play over here then Essendon should let him go given the chances of a flame out but if he's OK with either option and just prefers us slightly then they should hang on to him. Or at least think about it.

I think Corbett was recruited to play a very specific role and I expect he'll be a very pleasant surprise for our forward line. In 2021 he averaged 1.4 goals a game so he'd only have to get back to that form to be a very handy recruit as he applies terrific pressure as well. Taylor has mentioned that he also was consistently the best Gold Coast runner in their preseason training in terms of distance running. I think he'll be in the best 23 players next season.

I also think both O'Meara and Serong will spend time rotating off half forward and onball due to how many inside mids are in most peoples best 22 so I think if everyone's available one of Shultz, Walters or Freddy misses out. I think Clark will spend time on a wing which is why I'd love to see Wilson in the team to allow Clark to plays slightly further up the ground than last season.

My best 23 currently would be.

There is some exciting interchangability between half back and wing, and between inside midfield and forward.

Just watching some replays of games from this season online, and I got to say, the more I watch, the more I notice that Brennan Cox was so huge is so many key moments. The 1%ers he provided with invaluable and timely taps saved us, and provided key drive in so many instances, a very smart player.
I always rated him highly, but I must admit I underrated him, and he has really stood out in what I have seen now looking back.
