Prediction 2023 Best 22 Teams and discussion

Still not 100% on my best 23 tbh. What trying to do it has highlighted to me is how versatile this squad is (possibly the most versatile in the league?) and how we could genuinely shape up on a case-by-case basis.

Not that you want to be a reactive team, but it's great to know we legitimately have plan B & C available if required. JLo seems pretty adept at a changeup if needed (Fyfe vs Saints was a great example) and moving to 23 available will add to our options.

Jackson in particular provides us with huge versatility, but O'Meara and Fyfe can also rotate fwd, Brayshaw can play inside and outside (may even be our best winger). NOD can swing inside, Chapman and Young can roll up the wing, Walters and Switta can do stints on-ball, and there's more I haven't mentioned - it's going to be exciting to watch.

Still relatively weak fwd line, but Amiss will be a star, Treacy too, and I like the cut of Corbett's jib, think he'll play a role and do it well whilst those two develop over the next 2 years.

Weird to say but make sure you enjoy this period. It'll never be better. Even realising the dream isn't as wide-eyed, optimistic and downright intoxicating as potential and hope, and boy we've got buckets full of it.

The fact that West Coast are staring out at a barren, Mordor-esque wasteland for at least 5 years makes it even sweeter too.

All aboard the Purple Express, wherever she may lead!

My shot - obviously assuming all are fit

Ryan-Pearce-Chapman
Young-Cox-Clark
Aish-JOM-NOD
Fyfe-Tabs-Walters
Unicorn-Amiss-Switta

Darcy-Brayshaw-Serong

Brodie-Freddy-Erasmus-Schulz-Johnson

Emerg : Banners-Sturt-Wilson

So JOM gets jersey #2 and Luke Jackson will likely take #12.

Surely Johnson moves up to #9.

Erasmus could move up to #16 but he might be happy sticking with #28

Not that bad.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

B:
Luke Ryan, Brennan Cox, Heath Chapman

HB: Hayden Young, Alex Pearce, Jordan Clark

C: Nathan O’Driscoll, Andrew Brayshaw, James Aish

HF: Nat Fyfe, Luke Jackson, Michael Frederick

F: Lachie Schultz, Matt Taberner, Michael Walters

FOLL: Sean Darcy, Caleb Serong, Will Brodie

I/C: Jye Amiss, Jaeger O’Meara, Brandon Walker, Sam Switkowski

In: Luke Jackson, Jaeger O’Meara

Out: Rory Lobb, David Mundy, Blake Acres, Griffin Logue, Darcy Tucker

WE SAY: Although the Dockers have lost plenty of experience over the off-season – in particular club great David Mundy and gun forward Rory Lobb – their starting 22 still stacks up among the best sides for 2023. Star recruit Luke Jackson comes in to support Sean Darcy in the ruck while playing a hybrid role up forward to give them a different look. And the loss of Lobb will ideally be off-set by improvement from Jye Amiss and a bounce-back season from Matt Taberner after his 2022 was hampered by injury. Jaeger O’Meara will be another useful addition, but he won’t walk into the Dockers’ star-studded midfield led by Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong, as evident by Nat Fyfe already being used predominantly in attack.

Brayshaw/Serong/Brodie/JOM/Fyfe/Erasmus is a tantalising set of best 22-calibre mids but can we fit them all in? And if not, who makes way? Keeping in mind that Jackson and possibly even Chappy can run through the middle too. Fyfe will play significant time up fwd (I'm assuming) but it still seems a bit unbalanced and one-paced. With Acres gone and no Sharp I've been leaning more towards Andy to the wing.

Thoughts?
Speaking to a Hawthorn mate he thinks O'Meara is miles off being slow and that actually his pace has come back a little bit every year since he had the reconstruction. His defensive pressure with a high number of pressure acts per game is excellent too. Will Brodie is quick over 10 metres which is why he breaks away from congestion but struggles over longer distances. Erasmus is quick and could develop to be explosive over short distances but he didn't show that a heap a wafl level when he played onball. In short I don't think we are one paced with that midfield group you named but I'd add Switta and Jackson to the rotation in for short bursts onball as both of them would add speed and make us less predictable from clearances. That would also allow us to ease the huge burden Serong and Brayshaw have had when they spend all their ground time onball. Serong could spend some time forward and like you suggested Brayshaw some time on a wing of we have our full midfield group fit and playing well. Fyfe and Erasmus could also spend a lot of time forward to allow a ton of options to who plays onball.

Add to that group you named how Aish can fill in onball and Johnson also looking capable to fill a role onball for short bursts by next season then in my opinion We've got the best onball depth we've had ever. O'Meara's defensive work will also make us significantly better at stopping teams hurting us attacking from clearances compared to having Mundy in there.

Fyfe can then play mostly forward so when he is matched up by an oppositions tall defender our rucks target him at stoppages in the forward half.

Is anyone familiar with what the roles are at stoppages/centre square?

I think from memory it’s sweeper, playmaker and defensive mid? is that right?

How would our mids fit into those roles?

At centre square bounce downs our starting 3 often set up as:
Playmaker: Brodie
Defensive: Brayshaw
Sweeper: Serong
When Aish rotates through he is either Defensive (tagging) or Sweeper.
Fyfe like Brodie is pretty much only good as playmaker.
JOM can play all three roles.
Brayshaw plays all three roles.
Serong can play defensive and Sweeper.
We have a lot of combinations that can fill each role.
Playmaker: Brodie, Brayshaw, Fyfe, JOM
Defensive: Brayshaw, Serong, Aish, JOM
Sweeper: Serong, Brayshaw, JOM, Aish
No idea which role Jackson would play.
