This is in stark contrast to 1991, when Belichick was hired to be the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

He took a franchise that had been a consistent winner and struggled to keep the team relevant.

His record with the Browns was 36-44, a .450 winning percentage.

This includes only one postseason appearance in 1994.

The Browns finished Belichick’s first year with a 6-10 record and third place in the AFC Central.

Belichick improved his win total by one to end his second year 7-9 and another third-place finish in the division.

With Kosar gone, and Testaverde still injured, the Browns cratered.

The Denver loss began a 2-7 nosedive to finish the season.

The Browns stayed mediocre with a 7-9 record and third place in the division.

Looking back at his time in Cleveland through the lens of former players, coaches, and media, it’s not hard to figure out why Belichick was persona non grata.

Initially, one could look at the surface level and just focus on Belichick’s overall record with the Browns. 36-44 isn’t exactly a paean of a world class coach.

Just about any owner worth their salt would axe a coach who posted a losing record after five years on the job.

Ultimately, despite his meticulous game planning and football acumen, many of his Cleveland players had soured on him by 1995.

Even Mark Bavaro, a notoriously stone-faced tight end who played for the Giants and the Browns, knew trouble was brewing shortly after he arrived in Cleveland.

Cutting Kosar:

“Browns fans are enraged by the sacking,” read the November 12, 1993 article. “A radio call-in poll showed sentiment running against Belichick by a 9-1 margin. Some season-ticket holders have demanded their money back. And Browns players aren’t any happier. Said runner Leroy Hoard: “I thought it was a joke. How do you get a positive out of this?”

Interviews with Belichick became so dreaded that local media began to nickname him “The Voice of Doom” or just “Dr. Doom.”

In 1993, a writer for The Houston Chronicle had this to say about Belichick:

“In 14 years of covering the Oilers, I never have seen a coach work harder at being a cold fish than the Browns’ Bill Belichick. He possesses the worst communicative skills of any coach I have interviewed. When circumstances force him in front of the public or media, he frowns and squirms uncomfortably. Belichick is vilified in northern Ohio. In the wake of the Bernie Kosar debacle, Browns fans are finding out what most of the players and reporters who cover the team knew — that Belichick is an insecure control freak with a little man’s mentality. The chip on his shoulder is the size of a football, and anyone who even thinks about questioning his authority is given a bus ticket out of town.”

By the time 1993 arrived, Browns fans had soured on Belichick.

Angry from the losing and his dour demeanor, the fans began calling him “Mr. Bill” after the Saturday Night Live character.

Of course, things really got bad after Belichick cut Kosar.

Not long after Kosar left town, a few hundred fans snuck into Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium after a game against Houston and were ready to tar-and-feather Belichick, as reported by USA Today on November 22, 1993.

A character in the 2007 movie No Country for Old Men had a memorable line, “It’s the dismal tide. It’s not the one thing.”

For Belichick’s time in Cleveland, that quote is true. It wasn’t just one thing that led to firing, it was many.

In a conversation mentioned in the book “The GM,” former general manager Accorsi said Belichick told him, “I really screwed up that thing in Cleveland, Ernie.” Truer words have never been spoken.

Man was a colossal jacka$$

He was NOT a good coach

He went out of his way to poison the relationship between team and fans

He was a LOSER in Cleveland

He should continually get on his hands and knees to thank pure chance for FORCING him to play a generational talent

Otherwise nobody would know him other than as 2x head coach who failed miserably

Dolphins hired Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill as secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator.

Hill is leaving the Chargers to reunite with Vic Fangio, who the Dolphins hired as their new defensive coordinator. It's an unusual move, considering that Hill is moving from a defensive coordinator position to an assistant role. However, Hill—like Chargers head coach Brandon Staley—is a disciple of Fangio and will get the chance to work with the influential defensive mind once again in Miami. The Chargers are reportedly looking to promote Derrick Ansley to defensive coordinator.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Chargers have promoted defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley to defensive coordinator.

Ansley has spent significant time in both college football and the NFL, coaching primarily in the SEC. He last served as a defensive coordinator with the Tennessee Volunteers (2019-2020) and has been the Chargers' defensive backs coach for the last two seasons. Pelissero reports Ansley was "highly sought after" during this hiring cycle, and that head coach Brandon Staley was hoping to promote him and keep him on staff.

Eagles interviewed former Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard for their open defensive coordinator position.

Leonhard spent 10 years in the NFL as a safety, and per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is well respected in NFL circles. Leonhard was hired as Wisconsin's defensive coordinator in 2017 and served as interim head coach in 2022. With Jonathan Gannon taking over as the Cardinals' head coach, the Eagles look to be exploring options outside of the building for his replacement.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the Colts are expected to name Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter as their next offensive coordinator.

Cooter reunites with Colts head coach Shane Steichen after the two spent 2021 as members of the Eagles' coaching staff. Cooter's last offensive coordinator role came with the Lions (2016-2018), where in his best season, he had them ranked 13th in yards per game (337.8) and seventh in points per game (25.60). He showed a propensity at times to throw early and often with then-Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, and will likely have a young new signal-caller to coach up in 2023.

Talk about re-writing history.

He took over a 3-13 team that conceded more points than any team in the 90s . By the time he got you to the playoffs they were no. 1 in D in points conceded.

Went 6 wins, 7 and 7 then 11 wins in his fourth season. Kosar was gone in his second season there so they actually improved when he left. Kosar also did bugger all anywhere else so was finished anyway. BB's last season it was over early when they knew team was moving.

No doubt he made mistakes as he admitted himself years later but nowhere near the disaster you spin.

You had one double figure wins season in the next 25!! He won 6 rings

Theres no speaking reason, truth, logic to AC when it comes to the Browns, Ohio, Belichick

Re-writing history is what BB’s sycophants attempted to do.

You conveniently leave out the fact that his 1 winning season was at the expense of an all time soft schedule.

Fact is the Squeelers SOUNDLY beat his a$$ not once—not twice—but three times.

He did not win the division. He beat no teams that finished with a winning record during the regular season.

That “wonderful” season was followed by, ‘95 where he led the team to double digit losses.

The Browns prior to his tenure had dominated the 80’s in the central division and appeared in 3 AFC title games

He had a losing record in 4 of 5 seasons

He was a LOSER

Period

As for the last 25 years, you merely proved my point.

BB began the destruction of a once proud franchise—he began the torture we have endured.

I love how his irrational Daboll hate blew up in his face also, he thinks coz someone fails in Cleveland that automatically means they suck. When In reality it was more than likely just the Browns shitty franchise bringing them down.

AC is a weathered stubborn mule.
Tell me how many rings the great one has since TB got the hell out of there

Believe it is the same number Cleveland has

;)

If he makes the playoffs two years running with Daniel Jones as his QB he might be the greatest coach the league has ever seen.

Brady left the Pats because he knew it no longer offered him a shot at the SB given the parlous state of the roster, lack of targets etc. It would take the Pats several years to improve that roster, so Brady wouldve retired under Bill with no nore rings if he didnt leave for a more loaded roster.
