Fantastic. Hawks should bring back Glenferrie.
I would imagine it's the one ground we won't see come back as an AFLW venue, considering it's neither a training/admin venue for Hawthorn anymore nor is it used by a VFL or VFLW team. Plus the cost required to bring the ground up to scratch, especially with Box Hill City Oval to be upgraded wouldn't be worth it.

On another note, does Glenferrie Oval get used for anything any more?

For the NRL?

AFL could easily be higher.

....and on queue we have our first legitimate data points for streaming ratings and, though a small sample size, they are very favorable to the AFL

Week 35 of the new OZ Tam all fox / kayo streaming release as dropped. It is for week 35 and only includes the Sunday of the last round of the AFL, but includes the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the NRL's last round as well

Of the games listed in the top 20

Easily the highest rated game of the period was the Carlton Giants game with a BVOD of 366K and a reach and minutes that dwarfed the NRL games

Overal, the two AFL games average 146% of their reported foxtel numbers. I doubt that this will hold for the whole season but this is almost double what has been used as streaming estimate

The NRL has 108% for the seven listed matches.

I've got a feeling we will see with both sports Kayo figures increasing over the course of the season but with the AFL significantly higher.

The other great thing about this release is it will lay bear how silly it is treating an AFL average the same as an NRL average.

The Swans Melbourne game had a bigger reach and total minutes than the Rabbitohs v Roosters, but ends up with a significantly lower BVOD.

Not going to go down well in League code warrior land this new data!

Just further on this, there is a very clear relationship between whether or not the game is on FTA and its ratio of streaming to fox box

The three games in the AFL got a 177% for the foxtel Carlton Giants game (that would have only been on FTA in Sydney), 140% for the Port Richmond Game (so 159% for non FTA games overall) and 110% for Swans Dees (national FTA).

The Four NRL games listed that were on FTA averaged 94.7% of foxtel numbers and were all between 91 and 97%. The three non FTA games got between 108 and 138 and average 126%.

This makes sense. A subset of people with access to Kayo will continue to watch FTA games of terrestial when that is available to them.

Based on that data, I would be surprised if the AFL has less than 15% greater Streming / foxtel ratio than the NRL. Will substantially change the comparisons (including the dodgy average accumulating ones)

Edit: Based on better data

What are we expecting for Port vs GWS?

Port averaged 38k at home in the H&A season this year. Their record crowd vs GWS was 34.6k in 2018, and their last non-covid final at home was 41k vs WCE.

Based on all of that, I do not expect it to sell-out. Hopefully still 40-45k though.
If St kilda can get 68k, anything less than a sellout is pretty embarrassing.

Quality analysis as always The Educator.

Week 1 and then week 2 of WAFL finals.

Week 3 crowds generally jump up into the 4,000’s but unfortunately week 3 might be a bit low with Subiaco vs Peel the two lowest drawing teams (excluding the West Coast Eagles) down in Mandurah (70km from Perth).

Didnt realise this has come out...second week in a row.

The NRL might be getting a lower % increase off their Fox STBs but they also start higher, so their average rating stays higher. This also means we are going to miss ratings for AFL games from time to time

Wow, 26% (139% to 113%) is at the big end of what I thought it would be!

Those numbers overall are enough to tip the average viewing to the AFL fox / kayo viewing to the AFL

In round 24 of the AFL versus round 26 of the NRL there were 18.66(est) available AFL viewing hours (i.e. the 7 games on Fox Footy) with an average of 389 per game. The NRL had an average of 385 across its est 12.8 hours.

When you factor in the larger hours, the AFL would be miles in front. Will be even greater gap during periods where Thursday night games are on.

Yep just proves the point I've been harping on about for years, the afl gets punished on the 'average' number, due to having a game run significantly longer.

Look at the 'reach' differential, there's a reason that tv pays more for afl despite what all the halfwit leagiues would have you believe. The nrl ratings are about as genuine as their crowd numbers.

Actually maybe if they start counting the AFL attendance numbers during half time when everybody is out of their seat going to the toilet or buying snacks then the nrl might be able to claim bigger crowd numbers too 😅.

The RL has shot itself in the foot again in putting the Storm match at AAMI on Friday at the same time as the Carlton v Melbourne match over the road at the G.
Looking forward to CH 9 getting thrashed in its second biggest market again.
They didn’t have an option. The other match is in Auckland which if played into the East Coast in prime time, would have to start at 10pm NZ time. The NRL weren’t going to forego FNF for the sake of the Melbourne market…

AFL Finals first week scores 5.45 million viewers on Seven

The 2023 AFL Finals Series has kicked goals on the Seven Network, with the first week of Finals reaching 5.45 million broadcast viewers.

Thursday night’s first elimination final between Collingwood and Melbourne recorded the biggest AFL national audience this year and was the #1 program last week in people 16 to 39.

Seven’s live and free coverage of the match was watched by 1.09 million broadcast viewers nationally, peaking at 1.41 million viewers, and dominated its timeslot in all people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

The high-stakes game was up 87.4% on the 2023 regular season Thursday night average and reached 3.18 million people nationally.

Seven was #1 nationally in prime time on Thursday with a commanding 49.7% commercial audience share in all people, 50.7% in 25 to 54s and 57.3% in 16 to 39s.

Melbourne’s average audience was up 67% on the 2023 regular season to-date, while the Sydney audience soared 143% and Brisbane was up 110%.

Friday night’s elimination final between Carlton and Sydney Swans at the MCG reached 3.03 million people.

Carlton’s thrilling victory over the Swans was #1 in its timeslot in total people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s and scored an average 1.08 million viewers nationally.

Seven was #1 in prime time on Friday with an unbeatable 50.7% commercial audience share in the capital cities in total people, 50.5% in 25 to 54s and 51.2% in 16 to 39s.

Saturday night’s showdown between Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide reached 2.51 million viewers and had an average national audience of 823,000 viewers. It was the #1 program of the night in 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

Seven’s AFL Finals coverage captured 70% of the overall AFL TV audience across the four games, including 75% of all viewers in regional Australia.

Seven’s AFL coverage helped power Seven to a dominant weekly win across the week ending 9 September, with an unrivalled 45.1% commercial share across all people nationally and marking Seven’s ninth week in a row as the most-watched network.

With more AFL Finals, the Brownlow Medal and the AFL Grand Final still to come, Seven is set to grow its lead in the ratings year even further.

And for the first time, the Seven Network is making the AFL Grand Final and the Brownlow Medal more accessible than ever before for fans, with both major events available live, free and exclusive across the screens of Seven including 7plus in 2023. The new streaming rights underscores Seven’s commitment to connect viewers with the nation’s biggest and best mass cultural moments.

Also the total hours are what the TV companies want so they can show more ads and the AFL is way ahead in that area.

It also shows that there is a far bigger audience it is just spread over a lot more hours.

This is important for understanding likely subscription numbers which are the primary driver of the subscription component of TV rights.

It is silly to think that the average AFL is watching 50% more than the average League fan. Almost certainly they are watching about the same except the average AFL is counting as 2/3rds of an NRL fan in direct comparison of averages.

Ive been looking into this, and some of our assertions are faulty. Ratings are based on match length, but broadcast length, and in season this isnt as far apart as we'd like to think it is.

Don't understand what you are saying?

In the week 35 Oztam release, the average broadcast length was 162 for the AFL matches and 110 for the NRL matches - so 46% longer. No reason to think that is any different to during the season.

The AFL rounds would fluctuate based on when games are on.

When there are Thusday night AFL games and, even more so, public holiday weekends, the AFL benefits substantially on straight averages comparisons because prime time standalone games replace afternoon dead zone games on fox sports 3

This is why the average for AFL games during bye rounds is generally higher despite significantly less people watching

Also the total hours are what the TV companies want so they can show more ads and the AFL is way ahead in that area.

Foxtel don't show adds during broadcasts though and they pay the biggest amount for the tv rights.

It's more a case that the tv networks have always known the AFL reaches more viewers than the NRL and that the average viewers ratings model is crap and not a true reflection of popularity. Even news corp despite their nrl biased know the AFL product is worth more because they would study the data of what gives them the best bang for their buck commercially.

The nrl are just lucky that the afl only plays 1 game in primetime compared to their 3 per week and that the afl has overlapping games every weekend, otherwise the gap in money they pay for the tv rights might widen even more.

Fox do have broadcast partners that rely on exposure during segmemts, replays, scorechecks, MotM, breaks in play, advertising breaks and more.

FoxAFL has more partners than FoxNRL - 19-12.
7AFL has slightly more partners than 9NRL 15-14
