Not sure this is the right place to ask, but will we ever see a final at Marvel/Docklands again? For instance, if Dogs play the Giants in an elimination final, will this be held at the G? Confused as to whether the clubs get a choice or it's up to the AFL

MCC hoping the expected over 85,000 at the G tomorrow night won't be too impacted if it rains.

Rain, rain, stay away The AGE

If there’s one thing you can’t do in Melbourne in July, it’s to rely on the weather for anything.
So, the MCG is hoping the forecast of rain on Friday is wrong. Because if it is, there could be more than 90,000 fans packing in for the blockbuster between Collingwood and Carlton.
The Melbourne Cricket Club has told The Scoop the latest prediction had around 87,000 fans coming through the gates.
But MCC boss Stuart Fox said that was likely to be impacted by the weather. “Rain could be a bit of an issue,” Fox said.

“There is a little bit of inclement weather predicted, but hopefully that doesn’t impact turning up and enjoying the game.”
There have only been 15 home-and-away games where the crowd has been above 90,000.
Last year, a tick over 88,000 packed into the MCG for Carlton and Collingwood’s clash in round 23, where the Blues had to win to play finals and the Pies needed to win to receive a double chance.
If things stay dry, Fox is hopeful that number will eclipsed on Friday.
“We’re going to get really close,” he said.

It would take a special circumstance.

It would only probably happen for North, Dogs or maybe Saints against either GWS or GC. Further to this I think only North Melbourne would require a discussion for any interstate team.

No way they are playing a Carlton, Essendon or even Hawks final at Marvel ever again. Cats also with a completed home ground.

They played Dogs and Crows at the G and was rightly so when 60K turned up.

It would be interesting the clubs take on it.
If I am CEO of North I want a full house at Marvel - my home ground over a half empty MCG.

What games at the MCG thet you re call during the home and away season at night game that you can re call that had an attenance of say 96k

I think we will witness a 97k type crowd at the MCG this friday night.

At least 87k

but which night games do you recall that were huge.

To be honest its been years since we last had a 90k plus friday night match at the mcg.

They were more common in the late 90s and early 2000s.

i would say before the new olympic and ponsford stands were put up.

There is no way there they will get 97K.

They only ever sell 95K to home and away games. Take out member no shows and it will most certainly start with an 8.

The only H&A games to reach 90k are public holiday games. The only exceptions are Richmond having the double whammy of their existing marquee season opener also involving them unfurling their first premiership flag in 35 years; and Essendon/Carlton in 2000 playing off with Essendon on a 19 game winning streak and Carlton having won 13 from their last 14.

They haven’t otherwise happened and it won’t happen this week.

Does anyone know what the official capacity of the MCG was between 1992-2002?

Not sure of this. Here’s the list of grand finals from that era. Most are only mid 90s but 1997 did manage to nearly hit the 100k so who knows?

Yeah, it’s a strange one because I always felt it was closer to the 95k. Might have to dig one of my AFL Record Season Guide books from the late 90’s/early 2000’s from out of the cupboard to take a look.

I think you are spot on!

9th biggest Carlton H&A crowd in their history, and the fourth biggest ever Carlton v Collingwood H&A crowd.

Can this year remain the highest average crowd since Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney were introduced?

Edit:
Interestingly, without the GWS and GCS home games, the average goes up to a record 39,173.

I wonder what the average attendance would be like if Hawthorn and North played all their games in Melbourne
