Because if he doesn't do full training and doesn't make himself available for selection we'd be able to terminate the contract

I don't think a club can sack a player and withhold the money owed if they are unavailable due to sustaining a football injury. The player has lived up to their end of the bargain.

I am just curious as I can't recall a time where a player has suffered potentially career ending injury with 5 years left to run on their deal.

I know in the past that the Hawks had to include Vickery's full salary in the cap after his early retirement as there were compensation picks involved when he signed his deal. But I am not sure if rules are different for players that have early retirements that re-signed with their club.

Think this is gonna go slightly off track lol. Think if Gus said he's not playing anymore because of Brain issues we'd give him some money. Maybe not the whole thing but probably shake his hand and give him half as a lump sum or something like that.

We wouldn't force him to show up and pretend to be available and he wouldn't do the same cause if he's 'available' we'd pick him to play

Gus is on the books until the end of 2028. Does he still get the full contract paid out if it is a medical retirement? Does the club still cop a hit to the salary cap if hangs up his helmet?

If he isn't getting paid out then why wouldn't he just clog the list until the contract expires. Hit the gym with your mates a few times a week and get a regular deep tissue massage while setting himself up for life outside of footy.
Good question and not sure I want to speculate to be honest.. hopefully he is fine and carries on.

I don’t know what the precedent is for someone pulling out with 4 years left due to head injury. I presume he would be looked after and an exemption granted to the MFC to largely replace his salary.

Anyone else find this work-life balance question from Grundy truely bizarre? Bloke is a professional sportsman, wtf is he after. Wfh benefits or something?

He's allowed to choose an environment where he thinks he'll be best suited professionally and personally.

I don’t have a big problem with it - it’s about output.

I have sat in on a few interviews over the past 18 months in the corporate sector however and been quite surprised at how quickly the ‘work from home’ options are asked about!

Couldn't give a flying **** about his reasoning so long as we get a pick for him

If he retired he would no longer be able to fulfill his contract. I also think that if we were to pay him out somewhat the AFL would let us do so outside of the cap where concussion is involved.

Could just be he doesn't want to go to after school care programs every day after training, who knows.

I'm in the same situation recruiting for my business. WFH is basically people asking to get a salary for doing minimal work. Thank you chairman Dan

So rather than this nonsense it's more likely Port told Grundy he'd have to take a pay cut to join them seeing as they are taking Ratugolea and Zerk Thatcher to go with Sweet. That's gotta be a million of salary cap right there.

Sweet only nominated Port once the Grundy interest ended

Pretty sure the club has to honor the full amount if the player requests it.

Beams made Collingwood pay out his full contract (but that bloke is a campaigner of a thing) where as Tom Boyd walked away from his contract.

I would assume there would be some sort of payout though and the club would go to the AFL to try and have it not be part of the salary cap

If he retired over something like concussion we'd be stupid not to pay him out in full tbh. You can get that money moved outside the cap for medical reasons such as this though.

Probably not the right time to say it but * that contract extension looked dumb at the time and would look even worse if this happens
Yeah from a purely business perspective this is the risk with giving out massive long term deals.

Jasper Fletcher kicked 3 on the weekend in the qualifying final.
The last midfielder we added to the side was Tom Sparrow in 2019.
Our midfield has been the exact same for 4 years.

Brisbane have added
Fletcher, Rayner, Neale, Ashcroft and Dunkley in that time

Our teams just felt stagnant
