How good would a first 22 KPD be to draft rather than anyone we trade in ..is that O’Sullivan…or anyone? (serious question - I don’t have time to follow junior footy at this stage of life)

The latest from Twomey on the Grundy saga:

Brodie Grundy (Melbourne)

“Every club is meeting players at the moment. Clubs have been meeting them for months.

“Port Adelaide and Sydney are chasing Brodie.

“I think there’s a reality among the clubs, list managers, players, teammates, coaches about how this works. Maybe supporter bases may feel a little bit different but I think the industry itself don’t really care as much about these meetings (while the season is ongoing), which go on and on and on and a lot of times don’t amount to anything.

“Melbourne could make the Grand Final and I think it would be odd for Grundy to wait until then to think about what he wants to do next.

“The other reality is is that he’s contracted as a Demon so a trade has to be made that satisfies them as well.

“Melbourne doesn’t have to pay a dollar if he goes, there’s no way this is going to be a three-club arrangement paying for Grundy if he does leave.

“Grundy has an agreement with Collingwood and an agreement with Melbourne at the amount. Melbourne and Collingwood don’t have an agreement.

“If he were to leave, the club that is taking him on would be taking on all that’s left from his Melbourne salary.”

If I won powerball (the big jackpot, not just a mill or two) I would look for ways the help the swans. And the obvious one is housing for players (arms length - outside the cap) …these must be in place in some form and if not management and it’s benefactors have dropped the ball

ha, if the swans are at the point of relying on a fan winning powerball, fathead ed would consider his work done

Who said everything is shared?

The club or it's sponsors probably own houses and sub let them to players.

I really doubt players are scrolling through realestate.com trying to find a place to live while sitting in a hotel room after they get traded to a club.

of course not ... a lot of them can't afford the hotel rooms, you'll find them dossing on floor space at the airport for a few days

Its part of why we focus on having a drafting and retention model. Less 18 year olds have babies than those mid career.

It’s very understandable why young parents want to be around extended family …no one begrudged Jetta wanting to go back to WA with three kids, and more recently the 20 year hawks player with twins wanting to get home to WA.

I don’t think we have ever targeted fathers and expected them to consider share housing

I remember when Daniel Bradshaw (rightly) cracked the shits with Lions and entered pre-season draft with aim of getting to Sydney, Paul Roos said - he’s got four kids and I would think clubs would respect that and take it into consideration.

Other than Bradshaw, I cannot recall a father coming to swans …except Hickey who we worked that to our favour as Sydney is closer than perth and therefore to his and he’s partner’s family. Barass ultimately staying put and hard to begrudge him that (though Kinnear might say otherwise). Crouch too.

On the flip side, it has meant players like Reid and JPK late career haven’t considered elsewhere due to young kids and established roots.

As a last point - to be young and free and good at footy, how good would it be living in the eastern suburbs of Sydney with Logan, Chad, Angus, Corey, J-Mac, Ollie, lizard et al…playing for swans every weekend and golf at Errol’s parent’s golf club during the week. That would do me
I think the only thing that would bug Kinnear about Barrass would be the same as with Dawson - if he went back on his word. That would bug me too. If it hadn't been agreed, so be it. I got the feeling he was more annoyed at the BS his agent was peddling.

Back in 2009 we recruited Josh Kennedy and Ben McGlynn who struggled to get consistent game time in a formidable Hawthorn squad. Shane Mumford also couldn't cement a position in a Geelong team at the peak of their powers. I don't watch many games outside of the Swans, so are there any standout players from the top teams we could potentially be looking at who can't get much time in their senior team?
I think another area to look at is relatively high draft picks who are not getting a game with clubs who are notoriously bad at development. The kids would have had potential and ability to start with but because they are in a bad system just haven't come on at all. If we can rescue some of those kids before it is too late, then we may find a gem or two.

Just ducking over to take a look at the Bombers' list...

He can't say anything yet because he plays against us on Friday.
In fact, my sources say that the deal is as good as done, but the only sticking point is that Carlton are saying that if we are paying him so much money from Norf then they shouldn't have to pay so much as well.

If we could add McKay, Grundy, Reid, Caiden Cleary and two first round draft picks (hoping for GC pick) we will be right in the mix for the next few years

Matt Crouch just re-signed at Adelaide. Not sure if we really were after him or not, but IF we were that is an abysmal sign for our ability to attract anyone. Really hoping we weren't, the alternative makes me shudder

Just another example of players using Sydney to increase their offer from their existing club. Crows folded.

Somehow I doubt we are getting Harley Reid

I'm almost afraid to ask what the alternative is...

Jude Bolton has done quite well
Jude is a particularly nice-looking, well-spoken, intelligent guy. (Almost disqualifies from AFL commenting!). He is THE Sydney voice when Sydney games are broadcast. Luke Hodge has leveraged his Hawthorn old-boys connection with his few Brisbane seasons to be the Queensland voice. How many more dud ex-Melbourne footballers are in the media.

All good points and observations - and they both have playing resumes that speak for themselves. And you’ve reminded me that both Cornes and Brown are second generation greats with clear connections the generation above pulling strings and opening doors for them post career

I think Ted Richards and Mike Pyke (Macquarie group) good examples of possible post career opportunities in Sydney. Kieran Jack is in some similar financial orbit as well. Jason Ball somehow post 2005 grand final found a pathway to get onto AFL Commission

Hickey also said in retirement interview he had secured job through a swans partner / sponsor to get home to the Gold Coast post footy

We’re not leaving our players in the gutter post footy like cousins, chick, Kerr, ward, Yarran, Sylvia, etc
All those Swannies guys with finance careers are smart guys who got Uni. Qualifications while playing then had Swans connections to jumpstart their careers. Sydney is the place to be if you want a job in the finance world (see Matt DeBoer-GWS). Not sure there are as many connections for other guys, although the Swans seem very good at encouraging players to set up their post-footy lived.
