I'm honestly staggered we didn't go after one of Delean, Schoenmaker, or Humphries... our salary cap cannot be that tight.

Interested to know how many live picks there are in tomorrow's first round, because we've got pick 16, and I think we've basically shot ourselves back 15 spots in the draft pool for no good reason.

They drafted those guys in the middle of premiership windows.

Do you think Geelong are in a premiership window now or in the next 3 years?
Everything about their re-signings, then every off-field move since suggests they want to keep having a tilt this year, but 2025 will be a struggle for them either way.

You are talking about the 2022 premiers, and a side that saw injuries drag them out of finals contention. Not to be underestimated next year given how much pace they've been stacking on.

Cats are stuffed. Lost Ratugolea and had zero trade targets let alone acquisitions. One midfielder of note is on his last legs. FF hitting 36. Go to the draft and try to show how smart they are drafting 4 mature aged players.

They're on the fast track to wooden-spoonsville in the next few years. Talk of premierships or finals even just farcical.

I really wanted us to call out Cooper Simpson’s name, but I admit that I have not seen him play and my liking was based on all the write ups of him on this board. I trust that Austin and Co. have a much deeper knowledge of the prospects and would have watched many game of both, especially that they both play for Dandenong. I guess the appeal of Wilson over Simpson is that he capable of playing midfield and defense as opposed to midfield only. I would love to know how they compare against each other in other aspects, eg. pace, acceleration, burst, kick penetration, disposal efficiency, endurance, etc.

Funny thing about Geelong is the mature age they were rumoured to be keen on they didn't take Bailey Van de Heuvel full back from their VFL team. So might be more to come.

I wanted Simpson thought we needed a quick mid, surprised when we called Billy Wilson who I perceived as a back man.
Then I read on here he played a fair bit in the middle further confirmed by Austin comment how impressed the recruiters were when he played midfield.
What I've read and seen of Wilson (google) along with his state combine results it's very impressive.
I'm super excited about this recruitment, think Austin and co have done really well again. 👍

Gee there were a lot of people saying Billy can't kick etc....

From what I'm reading from reports on him he is a good kick ( you don't get people kicking out from the goal square that can't kick for one thing ) !!!!

And he is an up and coming inside mid....

What is not to like....???

He's our Blue boy now....
Get behind him and be happy or ..... Barrack for someone else's club !!!!!

he's got a good highlights package but looks like he'll need to thicken up through the body, legs and hips.

I don't expect to see much of him outside the VFL in 2024, at least not as a mid.
We have Ollie, Elijah and Binnsy to integrate in to a very potent midfield with one of Hewett or Kennedy likely to miss despite being absolutely quality mids. Jack Carroll has had a trying couple of years with nagging injuries restricting his trajectory, we should not forget about him either. There is absolutely no hurry for Billy to play ones, but he is the type to give 100% effort to push his claims.

Our depth and overall list profile has taken a tangible step forward this off season, in my opinion, despite parting with some decent players in the off season.

Of that list Binns and Carrol are the ones i hope break out.

Carrol is a funny one, isn't he, looks a million dollars or a massive bust, often in the same match. If he can find a consistent level he's AFL standard.

No good reason except for the salary cap and list management flexibility…

We are right in the window no doubt. The question I would pose in regard to who we might add in the last spot is; what would hurt our flag prospects the most in terms of losing a player?

Despite what you wrote in the LM thread, our tall depth cannot be relied upon sufficiently imo. Young has regressed and can say what he likes about regaining form, but one club already got rid of him when they had a need for his type at the time. Durdin is injured a lot and may even be required to play alongside Weiters at times (let alone replace him). The others are either 3rd talls (and injury prone) or still very young.

The bloke I wish we still had is Casboult. Could replace all of Weiters, Charlie, Harry, Pitto and TDK without us falling to bits. I would feel more confident in our flag prospects if we had one more ready-to-go back up tall.

With where we are aiming, I just don't see the point of taking another 18 year old who we don't rate highly enough to have used pick 57 on last night. The fact we committed to the rookie draft in advance tells me we have someone specific in mind, and highly likely to be mature aged. I'm hoping for a tall with at least some degree of positional flexibility.

He's old man dumped the scums for us so thats a win

Loooove the Moir pick. I know there are knocks on him, but it sounds like we've been in close contact with him for a while and are satisfied with both his attitude and his injury prognosis. If the form drop this year can be explained and easily rectified, then he's an absolute steal with incredible skills.

Wilson I'm finding it a little harder to get excited about. As a running defender I can see it, but I don't think that was a need for us. But to hear that we like him as a mid, and intend to develop him there....I love the pace and agility, love the intent, love the disposal when he gets into space....but his work by hand looks poor to say the least. He's got some incredible blokes to learn from - Diesel and Crippa foremost on that front - but it's an incredibly important skill for an on-baller, so he's gonna need to improve dramatically from the hospital handballs, missed targets, or handballs behind a running teammate that seemed to litter the footage I've seen of him.

It seems an odd pick when the explosive mid with good disposal in Simpson was right there as well. The only consolation I can think of is that Simpson was and is a midfielder, while Wilson was late to that party and may therefore have more immediate upside with development and experience in the new position. Despite those reservations/concerns, I'm optimistic that we've picked the right player for us with access to more information and insight than I have from the outside.

Ultimately though, Austin continues the trend of identifying a need and dedicating multiple resources to providing options that fill that need. Lacked pace, creativity and effective disposal in the front half. Trades in Hollands who ticks 2 of the 3 boxes, recruits Fantasia who ticks all three, and drafts Moir and Wilson who look like they tick 2-3 each as well. At the very least, the selection panel will have options, which in turn will hopefully drive performance.

I think it’s just that if another club had picked him in that range, if you wouldn’t be saying “that’s a good pick up” it would be strange to do so now just because we did.

Like most I wouldn’t have went with him but he has enough good traits that I’m not going to get upset over the selection.

I’ve had my pout. Wanted Austin’s head yesterday but I’m good now, bit of Sheepdip and I’m a new ram.

Moir has a lot of work to do in my wool covered eyes - not impressed - yet. Bit off a pretty boy and I don’t care if his parents were Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan - football is a team sport - not a kick the shit out of others individual sport. Show me how you fit son.

Wilson - I wanted your teammate, baaaaaaaad - but I now see what Austin and co see - this kid has some excellent tools we can use. Doesn’t **** around with it, get ball, use ball. Got some wheels too. He’s not a HB per se, he’s a link mid.

Today, I’ll be happy with Wills, under the radar tiprat - Carroll, meh, but not the worst. We’ll see anyways. Would like a big like Patton or did he go. I turned it off after I wanted blood.
