From the limited vision I’ve seen, I don’t like DiMattia with his little dinky kicks
He's got a first class mullet, and we are definitely lacking some mullettness on the list......

Actually prefer Simpson/Moir/MEdwards/Stevens should all be gettable by the time it's our turn

Given there's a few Under 18 Allies vs VFL/SANFL games coming up today and later in the year, I thought it was worth starting a thread for any of the watchers to discuss prospects they like and as some sort of a gameday thread for those matches.

Some notable prospects this year:

Harley Ried
Nick Watson
Ashton Moir
Daniel Curtin
Zane Duursma
Will Lorenz
Jack Delean
Nate Caddy
Archer Reid

And many more. All should be featuring in todays game and throughout the year at different levels.
Do you think Moir is a good choice and will make it despite having a poor year?
Can you comment on his competitivness.
Does he have the fire in the belly?

Schoenmaker to me looks Matthew Watson MK2. I think he will be found out for speed/agility in the next level.

Mirkov is as good as gone imo, if he was out of contract at the end of this season he would have been cut. So bringing in another developing ruck is smart

Would love 2 out of Moir, Collard, Cooper Simpson, Edwards.

Cooper Simpson I’m very keen on. Even better that he is the ultimate professional
^ the type voss loves

My wish list in order

Charlie Edwards and Cooper Simpson

If not, then these positional types

Talls 1 of Dawson, Goad, Murphy, Zakostelsky, Green, Edwards

Forwards 1 of Moir Collard, Morris, Sanchez

Mid, mid/forward if we miss on both Simpson and Edwards. Stevens, Freijah, O'Driscoll

Late/rookie McAuliffe

It can be taught/learned but the best have it naturally. Walsh for me is the classic example.

The term I'd use is "fostered".

I don't think it's something anyone can learn. There are absolutely people who lack the capacity to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to something that requires so much discipline and sacrifice.

So yes, some absolutely have it naturally, as a key facet of their personality. Walsh a prime example.

Others will never have it, no matter how hard you try - because the harder you try the more they resist it.

The remainder can aspire to it if they're in the right environment, with the right people around them, and under the right circumstances. You can't sit them down and teach them to do it. But you can foster the mindset by demonstrating those required values and supporting them through the associated challenges.

At some point in time you gotta cull this list :p

In any case, I think we will be relatively happy with our selections - given that they add to our list, but are not expected to “be all and end all” of our team’s fate - a great spot to be at :D

For me, there is a reasonable list of players I would be happy with, with our 2 picks

There are a few which I prefer we not take, such as Roberts, Schoenmaker, DeMattia

and that's fine. Neither are established

I just don't get adding another ruck because you don't rate the others. Waste of List spots which are vital

If we got another one for this reason we should have cut someone else

Sounds fair, though you'd hate to cut one of the developing rucks and then miss on the better prospects on draft night. Leave yourself with another ruck you don't really like, or only 3 ruck options (one still yet to dominate a game, one oft-injured and unlikely to ever dominate a game, and one very young developing player).

Still, I think if we take a ruck in the draft it'll be one with the versatility to play elsewhere as well. Cover a couple of bases and reassess in 12 months. List spots are at a premium, but I think the ruck spot is one that is still very uncertain.

The club loves Pitto, but he is a very limited player.

The club loves TDK, but he's still a flight risk in the next few years and remains mostly a tease.

Mirkov perplexes me, just doesn't seem like the kind of ruck you want to dedicate 5-6 years of development - I'd have used the diagnosis as a convenient out and cut him this year, with a promise to help facilitate his treatment and rehab and to list him in the reserves if he was keen to keep playing - can't imagine any other club was going to come rushing in to get his signature.

HOK seems a good prospect - not sure how wedded to him we are as a club, but I think he fits the brief more than Mirkov at the very least.

This year I think we should look at drafting a mid, and we should look at drafting a forward 50 specialist. But if the options on the board didn't appeal for whatever reason, I'd sooner take a ruckman than a half back, wing, utility or unspectacular small forward. It's a list spot for one year, on a player who probably wouldn't have played much if at all anyway. Use it to challenge Mirkov and O'Keeffe and see who steps up or wilts. Whichever shows the least promise makes way next year and we target other needs then.

Personally I don't think he does but I don't have any insights other than what I've seen on field through the champs and a few SANFL games.

Im not sure how much a hip injury can effect you but if we call out his name id assume it must have been pretty bad. Couldn't imagine any team drafting him in the top 50 if he was fully fit and he performed how he did.

Hopefully for our sake he's cherry ripe next year and gets back to the player his draft profile read as at the start of the season.

Vision. He can go short or long depending. I've seen him kick over 40m plus to advantage numerous times
Not much to De Mattia but flowing locks, after initial burst from the pack, hope we pass, Next Year's draft cohort has an abundance of midfielders, should we miss out on L.Collard or A.Moir, reckon Austin will select either a dashing HB or KPD and Ruckman. After top 15 its not too inspiraing excepting for L.Collard or A.Moir.

A hip injury can potentially have minimal affect on straight line speed, yet have a somewhat hidden yet profound impact on lateral movement, by definition agility. Similarly might allow basic mechanics of kicking to remain intact, yet detract significantly to the “punch” of that kicking.

When young and fit an athlete can misjudge the effects of a hip impingement. It is possible to feel “normal” with an amount of niggling bite, which manifests more after cooling down.

I have chronic issues back, pelvis and hip (emanating from back/facet joint). Moir has nowhere near my issues, but it is amazing how the pain and restriction can increase with minimal notice. An elite athlete can be brought back to the field very quickly, particularly one who relies on agility and positioning over straight line speed.

I cannot claim to know the level of impingement Ashton has endured. I do know that he was quite reliant on agility, his step, in his underage year.

I think we judge a player who has “fallen” much more harshly. The expectation on Moir was quite phenomenal. His state team was poor, adding to the negatives around his performance.

I am prepared to back Austin, Agresta and co. to have done their due diligence. The monumental plus is his disposal effectiveness. Generally dual sided, some have mad comparisons to Ryan Houlihan which is quite interesting.

As I have stated before, I was dismissive if Moir and was in the camp of being intrigued how much he would slide and had some trepidation that another club would score a steal if he was passed over by most. When doing two seperate phantom drafts on Big Footy, including ours, which I take quite seriously, I used a different level of analysis over just grabbing my “favourites”. Everything emanating from our list, our earlier trades and needs versus actual depth brought me back to Moir. Even 2023 Moir actually showed enough to be confidently drafted, a return to 2022 impact would make him a must have.

I will be very comfortable with whoever they pick as they have done the work and done well so far

Yeah and it will be easier for a recruit to come into a top 3 side than a bottom 3 side.

I always love his:

“he’s a ripping young lad from a great family”.

:p
Yeah, everyone except Collard

He’s just a bad egg - last seen running away after drink driving!

Hold on - just say CC :p
