Fixture 2023 Fixture

As long as we get the last game of the season at home (especially since we are the one who should be playing finals) then I don't care about playing away first up.

I think it is important having alternate Home & Away fixtures. For 4 years and the entire tenure of J-lo's coaching career we haven't started a season at home. You look at the fixture and ALL the away teams are interstate teams, Vic clubs get kissed on the dick so much in this comp.

That Adelaide fixture last year was a really difficult one.....we only just scraped away with a win by the smallest of margins...literally the point in what, retrospectively was great theatre, but not pleasant as a fan of either team in the moment. Last year alone we should have been fixtured a home Round 1.

I realise grumbling about it is fruitless, and so I've probably wasted however many minutes it takes to write this comment, but the AFL falsely promotes equalisation and fairness and pulls this stunt time after time....pretty sure many Vic teams don't have to travel much in the first 3 rounds, pretty sure Carlton didn't travel out of state once. We're always pushing sh** up a hill with this, it'll be amazing if we ever win it, no one can complain we didn't earn it!! Pretty sure Richmond got 7 fixtures in their home state in a row on route to Finals in 2019, vaguely recall BT or a commentator bringing it up...clearly that's not right, especially when that team is obviously going to be a contender. It's completely biased and we get sent to Tasmania when the likes of the Tigers, Essendon and St. Kilda barely do, we've had to play in the Northern Territory in the past etc......we get sent all over the damn place whilst these protected species don't...and I'm sick of it. Even if others won't say it or even think it, I do. And will.

It's a rort and although the fixture on paper is a winnable one for the club given where we're both at and ultimately that's what it will focus on, you can't disguise the fact this is crap and isn't advocating a competition set up for fairness...what are our kilometres travelled every year compared to Collingwood and Bulldogs, etc...?!?!

It's a p***take. It really is.
I find it hilarious that Richmond supporters firmly believe 2020 was the hardest premiership ever won because they had to go play in another state and stay there. If they had to get in a plane pretty much every single week like our teams do they’d probably build a statue of every player for the amazing adversity they had to overcome.

Ah well. Slid right into the ‘Who Cares Cup’ time slot from Round 1. Go Freo!

Playing such an interesting fixture on the Sunday graveyard slot is the worst part of that scheduling. Both St. Kilda and Freo only get so many interesting matches to neutral fans that would be worth showing prime time and still rate well...and they've burned this one in the dead slot. Can't help feeling like both clubs are a bit of an afterthought for the AFL.

I'm always staggered as to how much people care about where the first game is. It might be different if I lived in Perth and wanted to go I suppose, but it hardly feels like it matters. Doubly so if you think you're a top 4 contender.

Personally I think it's way more important to get the last game of the home and away season at home to maximise the chance of a win that sures up a spot in the 8/4/home final spot. My consistent point of frustration is that we haven't had one of those since 2018 either. Last year was especially weird as we didn't get the first game at home either and usually you do get one or the other.

We’re both playing away round one due to;
1. Ed Sheeran
2. The AFL bringing the season forward one week to accommodate the magic round, so the oval not being ready.

One of us is likely to play away round 2 as well. Derby possibly be either before, or after, round 5.

Surely the derby should be round 2 so that no one is ****ed over by 2 away games in a row
Both teams will be playing at home in round 2. Then one will stay home again whilst the other plays away per usual.

Given our away game will be on a Sunday and your team’s away game round 1 will be on a Saturday, I think the Eagles will play Friday week 2 and Freo will play Sunday week 2, both at Optus. I’m assuming that that will give the cleaners time to wash some of the stench away from the stands before Freo plays on Sunday.

How in the name of sweet mother Mary and all that is sacred does WC get to play any Friday night game for the next couple of years?

Exactly. Trying to manufacture hype.

We don't have a lot of Arch rivals but I think St Kilda is one. Weird stuff tends to happen when we play them eg Sirengate, Whispers in the Sky, Umpire Carey marking the ball not to mention the Ross factor. I think we both have a chip on our shoulder thinking we are better than each other despite long periods without winning the ultimate prize.

Yes you are right and round 3 to be a derby then it will go back to normal. 1 team will get 3 games in a row at Optus rounds 2-4

We've requested to play round 1 away (the last few years) so we can align our Len Hall tribute match and the Starlight Purple Haze Foundation games. It has nothing to do with compensation for West Coast.

If we are good enough, then we should win anywhere. Fly in, take the 4 points, and fly out.
in many years gone past we were able to have round 1 at home, while still having Len Hall etc. Lazy excuse by the AFL/club imo

Agreed. Many people here are cool and casual about it, and that's fair enough.

Because it's St.Kilda, it's winnable. Had it been Cats at the Cattery or Brisbane, I'm not so sure the folks who are ambivalent to it would feel quite that way, but alas....who knows. Who cares...?!?!

Onwards we go....

No Max King. Shame really. I’d like to play the Saints at their best. I would like to see video of a marking contest in which one player comes away needing a shoulder reconstruction. He must of had someone undercut him and he landed ass over tea kettle.

Reckon round 1 is probably the best time to get top 4 sides from last year.

It's a free hit too since you're not expected to win those games anytime. Great way to start the year assuming you don't get spanked.

Yep, some guy on the margins of the list has tried to impress the new coach by going hard on the key forward on the first day of training. Imagine it happening to Mahomes or Brady!

I read that both sides will play at home round two.
Loved Cane Cornes slipping into the first round draw. Every Melbourne based clubs play in the state. How convenient.

Wasn't the Matt Carr incident also against Saints?

The one where the umpire offered the defender if he wanted Matt Carr to retake the shot at goal or accept the behind? I think so. My fuzzy recollection I see red & black so either Saints or Essendon. It wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn't another Saints debacle
