AFLW 2023 Fixture

Based on that small nugget about a R1 western derby, one might guess all two-team towns will start the season the same way. And this is exactly what I wanted (albeit a year late)... no AFL men's football on due to pre-finals bye, so make sure all the AFL women's teams are playing in their home state that weekend!

If so, my guess for round one is as follows.

ROUND ONE FIXTURE PREDICTION (Times AEST)
Thu 7pm: Carlton v Collingwood (Ikon Park)
Fri 7pm: Hawthorn v Essendon (Kinetic Stadium)
Sat 1pm: GWS Giants v Sydney (Henson Park)
Sat 3pm: Adelaide v Port Adelaide (Norwood or Unley)
Sat 5pm: Gold Coast v Brisbane (Heritage Bank Stadium)
Sat 7pm: North Melb. v Melbourne (ETU Stadium)
Sun 1pm: St Kilda v W. Bulldogs (RSEA Park)
Sun 3pm: Richmond v Geelong (Swinburne Centre)
Sun 5pm: Fremantle v West Coast (Fremantle Oval)

Wrong again.

Previously: 13 minutes with diluted time on + 2 minutes with full time on
Now: 15 minutes with diluted time on + 2 minutes with full time on

Is that for certain? The wording on the womens.afl article is fairly ambiguous.

Each quarter will now run for 15 minutes plus time-on for goals or major injuries, with the final two minutes of each quarter also holding time for match stoppages.

That could read as either "15 minute quarters, of which the final 2 minutes have full time on", or "15 minute quarters, plus another 2 minutes with full time on".

As a Crows supporter I'd love to start with the Showdown in round 1. Would certainly make a welcome change from our usual round 1 fixture against the likes of Brisbane, Melbourne, or reigning-premier era Bulldogs!

The wording on that particular womens.afl article is wrong, rather than ambiguous. Several other outlets have made the same mistake.

It's not "15 minute quarters, of which the final 2 minutes have full time on" because that's what it already was... which apparently Sarah Black, Lauren Wood, Marnie Vinall and Sarah Burt are unaware of.

The wording of the official AFL statement:
It used to be 13 minutes " " "

From what I've seen, the only outlet that has reported it correctly is Fox (via Ed Bourke from Nca Newswire):

Got me thinking maybe a summary of each club's past round one matchups could be interesting to look at:

ehh it was kinda interesting.

I don't get why they don't just have 15 min quarters with normal time on.
That would probably work out to an average match length that is about 4 minutes longer. As mentioned earlier in the thread:
The reason to not just go with the 4-minute-longer option could be about maintaining a 2-hour TV product.
They've already shaved off a few minutes from the QT/HT/3QT breaks to keep this new length within 2 hours.

They could cut HT shorter in the future, but to do it all in one move (while also capping interchanges) is potentially a tough ask for particularly the new teams.

So sick of this fixture being at Carlton year after year. If it can't be at Victoria Park due to lighting requirements why not take it to Marvel?
As mentioned on the previous page in quotes from several articles, expect the small number of games played in big venues like Marvel to drop even further this year.

The AFL's belief, expressed by Gill six months ago, is AFLW in those venues isn't "fun" and they want to double-down on the suburban vibe as a point of difference from the men's competition.

Won’t happen - there is no way all derbies will be on the same round.

Yeah they might just do Frem v WCE for R1 because it'll be the only close match of the interstate derbies (unless GWS aren't at full-strength).

I think the Q-Clash W will be closer this year. Brisbane have lost a bit of talent over the off season.
Yes I think it will be closer than the average margin of 68 points in the past 3 encounters. I'm not sure the AFL has faith in the Suns to make it much closer though--if they do, they'd be tempted to give it R1 billing.

I'll take a punt and say Round 1 Saturday night (7:30pm) at Casey Fields, Grand Final re-match, Melbourne v Brisbane.

Plus, I'd back the Freo v WCE to be held sometime after Daylight Savings (in the East) commences, so they can do the Friday or Saturday night double-header (East Coast game 7pm, WA game 9pm AEDT).

In the H&A season, Melbourne and Brisbane have met 6 times: 4 in VIC, 2 in QLD. Most recent was at Casey Fields, so I reckon the next one should be back at Springfield (where they have good lights, unlike Casey) even though they obviously last met there in the grand final.

Won't happen as capacity is the issue. The opening game is the marquee fixture.

More likely after last year's essendon vs hawks, that pies and blues play at docklands
Nnnnnot sure how many times it needs to be said the competition is going to move away from big stadiums like Marvel.

There will be marquee games.
It won't be every week, but there will be some.

No different to a showdown at Adelaide oval
And yet the latest report is the western derby will be held at Fremantle Oval, rather than the vacant Optus Stadium.

Perhaps the AFL will contradict themselves. But based on the info we have atm, it's more likely they'll fixture games (marquee or otherwise) at "community venues" and then consider moving if/when sold out well in advance.

Less than 2 months away and still nothing

Amateur hour
Smacks of optics, where the AFL like to give the impression that they working towards a female competition equal to the mens, but they are failing to grow the female version in so many ways.

Obviously no fixture because of no agreed CBA yet.

Not only annoying for the fan, but hurts the club's bottom line.

As Bree Brock (Brisbane Lions) mentioned on The Outer Sanctum a few years ago, the later they get a fixture, the harder it is to sell corporate sponsorships and packages.
