Just checked in WIki to see how many games he has played. Is it correct that he hasn't played senior football since 2020? That doesnt feel right? He has had some games since then hasn't he?
Wikipedia is only as good as someone who bothers to update it, so it's useless for stats for non-retired players because no one's updating all player stats regularly.

Any of the stats sites will have him playing 11 games in 2021 and 5 last year.

Wish Phil the best of luck. Has been a phenomenal person to have at the club, a very astute recruit way back in those early formative years

I'm sure there's plenty of career avenues available for Phil - whether that's in a front office capacity or in media as a commentator/broadcaster

they usually link it to a stats site, perhaps his page isnt.

Those stats make much more sense

I dont think Gold Coast will want to bring in any more than the 3 academy kids. They will look to trade in 2024. They'll have to upgrade too many first rounders on potential at one time in 2025.

If we want 4. I think we could trade our 2024 first and something else pretty decent, might involve a third side and one of this years first rounders. We could than trade one of this picks into next year if need be. so we still have 2 this year and one next year.
Cal Twomey has been talking about it ( both how everybody wants pick 4 from GC, as well as the possibility of getting a pick before a Walter Bid)

everybody will definitely want 4, no way they'll keep it, just gets gobbled up.
How do they get in before the Walter bid? that'll be straight away. unless they come back in between Walter and Read.
Id suspect they go the traditional route of trading it for someone's future first.

Phil Davis is a legend of our club. Whilst his retirement was expected, it’s still sad to see one of our original Giants (and one of our inaugural co-captains) leaving. This just leaves 5 from our original list - Ward, Kennedy, Haynes (all their contracts expire 2024) and Toby and Coniglio (contract expiry 2026).

Thanks for the wonderful memories and your commitment and service to the club and culture. At every fan interactions Phil was polite, considerate and wonderful to the kids. Given his diverse media, commentating and business skills, I am sure he will have a well deserved successful post-Giants career.

phil will be missed and best wishes

Tony Shepherd announces he’s stepping down as Chairman creating a vacancy at the top of the club

3 days later Phil Davis announces his retirement as a player.

coincidence?

Dave Matthews also said in the 2:45pm press conference (1:09) - He will be a key part of the Giants family going forward

Phil Davis would be an excellent Board member with his footy experience, knowledge, media confidence and business acumen. Based on his profile below he is also a corporate speaker (charging upto $5k a speech!) and is studying for an MBA. However, Phil bring the Chair without any Board experience is very unlikely - maybe Phil joins the Board with the AFL nominating the new chair/ the current deputy chair taking over?

Wouldn't be at all surprised if Phil Davis is hired as Special Comments expert for one of the TV broadcasters.

Has done it before.

However, I'd prefer him to have some senior role within the Giants.

Perhaps he can do both like Bartel. We can slowly take over the whole media :)

I suspect both

Not sure if I should read too much into the comment about our growth in being one of the biggest clubs in the next decade or so, perhaps his next role may be to assist with that in some capacity? 😀

AFL look set to introduce veterans list… wonder if we wrangled Haynes’ contract with big back end, so that we could throw it on that list… you can have one player on it, who has given 10 years service and is 32 or older…
Genius if he qualifies.
My understanding is that whilst a club can have a veteran if they meet the rules (32 and older, 10 years service), their salary is still included in the salary cap?

The criteria put forward by the AFL in the scenario is the player would have to be over 32 years old and to have served at least 10 years at that same club, with his money still being included in the salary cap.

What’s the point of it then? How much allowance is it?
