This leaves us with still 11 players left whose contracts will expire this year
  • all of these are probably re-signs with no counter offers from other clubs: Keefe, Fleeton, Lloyd, Hamilton and our two CatB rookies (Madden and Gilbee)
  • we will probably make an offer but there may be offers from other clubs or the player maybe looking for other opportunities: Riccardi and Flynn
  • no sure if the club will make an offer: Preuss (I hope we do offer a one year extension, as the poor man has had bad luck with injuries, and especially if Flynn leaves); Wade Derksen (hope we make an offer but Kingsley seems not to think he’s AFL standard?)
  • will retire: Davis

Hopefully Flynn stays, cant see Preuss staying on.

The reality is players like him that can be very effective as intercepting defenders and also go forward and kick goals are very hard to find.

He’s been a great contributor, always stayed loyal and also been quite durable.

He’s also had a team first mentality and stayed positive even when constantly moved around. With him tied up we pretty much have all our A grade talent locked up.

Cadman is probably the interesting one now. He has shown nothing but is very young. We do need him to lift significantly next year as key forward is our one area of weakness. He looks like a lost puppy at the moment but hopefully some time can fix that.
Allegedly less than 800k, the 800k+ was the figure other clubs were sitting on to get him to leave.

I’d be surprised if he’s on more than 720 base + incentives

Preuss is an interesting one. Overall, a tremendous disappointment and waste of a unique talent. I know his body has let him down but I never got the impression that he was super dedicated either.
Should we offer him anything or look elsewhere? Hard to say not knowing the extent of his injuries and likelihood to re-occur. At best I reckon we offer him a one year deal and say, get much fitter than you ever been over the offseason or that will be it.

It has been an underwhelming result but I don't think I've seen any indication that the 'dedication' or effort wasn't there.
Same with Connor Stone, back issues are really tough to come back from, and he had a bad gym injury ...which if anything shows he was pushing himself really hard.
It's easy to be on the outside and judge but I bet you he's worked really hard and wants to be the no1.
Also...when Preuss came in he was seen as our no1 ruck
Then Flynn was no1 ruck

Now Briggs is clearly the best of them all, it's created a great little system where they have probably pushed each other to keep improving.

I wonder what happens now with Riccardi. Given he has a chance to secure multiple years on pretty good money I wouldn't blame him for leaving for the security given he is likely to only get a few shots at a big contract.
23 years old and finding his feet now though, would love to keep him

With Ricardi you’d like to think he stays. He’s just getting himself in form on the back of Kingsley coaching and the giants are looking like a good place to play for the next 4 or 5 years

I feel that Preuss was definitely ahead of Flynn when he was up and firing at the start of the season, before his injuries. The practise match they played in Canberra Preuss was absolutely flying. He really dominated Flynn in the centre bounces, his tap work to advantage was the massive standout to me during the match. I still imagine Briggs would have the edge on Preuss, but he'd be a handy back up ruck if he stayed.

he was given the #11 jumper.

doomed from the start.

So, assuming Wardy has got that extra year already, the OOC players are: (main list) Preuss, Keeffe, Riccardi, Fleeton, Flynn; (Cat A rookie list) Davis, Lloyd, Hamilton & Derksen.

The ruck position is a funny one. Suspect we'll only keep one. Flynn is a local boy, generally doesn't have too many fitness issues versus Preuss seems to be endlessly injured or in MRP strife, although probably has the greater upside if fit to play.

The Hawks board reckons they have indications that Riccardi has turned them down to stay with GWS; I guess we'll see how that plays out.

We do need to take 3 spots at the draft (or promote a rookie or two), but we are two main list spots lower (with correspondingly two extra Cat A rookie positions). Phil to retire seems a certainty; one ruck going is a second spot. So, there's at least one more departure. Of the OOC group, I'd expect Lloyd to be kept for another year, but Hamilton & Derksen could be vulnerable. Personally, I don't think Derksen should be vulnerable, but he seems to be disfavoured by the coaching staff, and if we do retain Riccardi, he could be on the chopping block. I don't mind Hamilton, but with Fahey the next in line and a squeeze in the defensive team already (we're really playing an 8-man defence: Taylor, Buckley, HH, Idun, Whitfield, Cumming, Ash, Perryman, with Cumming/Whitfield pushing up onto a wing a lot of the time) he too could be at risk.

If Haynes were to depart from the contracted list, then there's a third spot opened up; but may not be the end of the departures (though clearly, not an excessive number leaving for once!).

We're definitely in a good spot - it remains to be seen how we can maximise the opportunities this off season to improve the squad.

Probably hard to improve other than by drafting a couple of likely top 15 picks. We might need to sign a mature ruck/ forward if 2 of Flynn, pruess, riccardi leave. I wonder if they are considering training any of our backs as forwards this off season? I don't have any candidates in mind.
I also wonder if Haynes will extend his stay, or just wait till next year to see how he goes.
It might be ( hopefully) even harder to make our team next year

Re cadman, I think growing into his frame and another off-season of development will be the test for him.

I hope that he can leverage his well above average cardio capacity into some better play next year.

He's 18 and a full forward in his first year. Time. That's the only thing that will help. He will be fine.

It should also be remembered he played very little as a forward in junior footy, playing wing before going through a late growth spurt ... it's all very new to him

Agreed, my point was he has the aerobic capacity to be doing better than he does right now. Which has more to do with how we play him than anything else.

He sort of looks a bit like a tall winger at the moment, has a really good tank but gets a bit monstered and doesn’t know where to lead. Would be good if we can get him some specialised coaching in the off season from a Matthew Lloyd type and see if that can help him with his leading patterns.

He is playing on blokes who have 20kg on him and much more nous and games under their belts. 3 years time he is going to be HUGE
Yep… he actually has a really good frame and physique. Just has to build strength and start putting the muscle on. I don’t think it’ll take too long.

I can see him putting on 10kg this off season. Imagine having Sam Taylor to stand during the off season... Playing on the best full back in the game in match simulation going to be such an advantage

A sign of things to come - our players are staying with us, and can sense that something very special is happening

Once seen as a feeding trough for rivals, GWS are managing to turn the trend of losing out in bidding wars for their own star figures and instead build their list from the ground up again.

The Giants have bid farewell to best and fairest winners, a Coleman medallist and as many as 14 top 10 draft selections - two of which were first-overall picks - since their existence.
