Our Midfield is developing nicely, we have a lot more depth and skill within our midfield at the moment and with some patience I would hope they develop into a weapon that drives future success.

Jai Newcombe - probably our best midfielder at the moment, good penetration on his kicking, took a huge step forward last year and hope he continues with that form
Josh Ward - already had some high 20s games, good accumulator who can run and carry and usually uses it well by hand or with medium length kicks
James Worpel - will likely get first crack on the inside, but if he doesn't perform, might be under pressure to keep his spot with so many options
Connor MacDonald - physically stronger, looking confident and more agile, was a star mid in junior footy, looking good in midfield in pre-season
Cam MacKenzie - new to the team, but is a quality i50 kick, having a lot of good moments in pre-season, good stoppage player
Cooper Stephens - new to the team, had a few decent games for Geelong last season, was a good big bodied junior with outside run and goal kicking
Conor Nash - looking like a physical specimen, looking to have another good season, might have to compete with others to keep his spot.

Amon and Morrison playing mostly wing are 2 of the better wings in the AFL currently on recent form, Maginness could play HFF tagging the counter attacking Def or tagging an opponent mid/wing. There could be other youngsters stepping up in midfield too, but we'll see how they handle pre season and Box Hill footy, Weddle/Hustwaite showed something, Weddle could be a flanker in his first year to ease him into it? Hustwaite could develop into a player by years end? Not so sure yet?

Not sure if this is the right thread but. Does anyone know by round one what the average age list is of the Hawks, i am seeing a few different ones, somewhere between 22.1 years to 23.1. ?

Also think we've drafted running midfielders who can play other positions, where previously we had forwards try to pinch hit as midfielders to add the run, which made our midfield depth feel thin and also meant robbing the forward line. Now we have MacDonald, MacKenzie, Ward, Day who can have stints in different parts of the ground as well play midfield as well. Moore and Impey could have stints in middle but more of luxury when they do, but MacDonald, MacKenzie, Newcombe can all chip in up forward, meaning hopefully we are adding to the forward line when they do, rather than taking Wingard/Breust out at times to get some except midfield run and support.

As a core midifeld group, I really like the mix of Newcombe, Ward, MacDonald, Day and McKenzie. They all complement each other quite nicely. Then adding in the likes of Worpel, Wingard, Moore, Maginness, Nash, Amon, Stephens, it's looking like it'll be pretty solid in a year or two. Young and raw, but lots to like.

You left out Stephens

Similar to Nick Blakey at Sydney

Was a F/S with North and also in the Swans Academy, so had the choice of either
Had 3 options - F/S Brisbane (Fitzroy), F/S North or Sydney (Academy).

Chose Sydney due to family still living there - and perhaps dad still coaching there. Makes complete sense. If they can stay close to home they usually do.

Probably the only F/S I can think of who chose to move states to play for his father’s club is Will Ashcroft, who has gone to Brisbane whilst dad remains the CEO of Sandringham. To be honest, being able to enjoy the relative anonymity of being an AFL player QLD would be a decent pull.

Pretty sure I read somewhere Cooper was rated best player in the state for his age group
Played 8 games out of 14 for the Morningside u14s.

Kicked 1 goal and was not named in the best players at all during the season.

Not sure where you got your mail from…..

Curb your enthusiasm people.

I'd move interstate to avoid being drafted by North Melbourne!

Pretty much every highly rated father son will nominate their dad's club if it's the only option other than the open draft, even if they live interstate. The only notable player who didn't was Marc Murphy and that was a long time ago. Maurice Rioli Jr, Tom Mitchell, Taj Woewodin and Bailey Scott are all players who nominated and moved interstate. Josh Dunkley nominated the Swans as well, they just didn't pick him.

Didn’t help poor Fev - news crews were all over him like a rash. Granted Fev made their job all too easy.

Nick Blakey says 👋 .
The Swans discovered the son of a 300 game AFL player who was presently coaching at their club did they? The point the poster was making is that Blakey would have been a prospect regardless.

Intrigued how many current listed players supported HFC? But playing for other clubs.
There are prime examples of sheezel, and ginnivan

There must be quite a few out there given the recent history (08 to 15) of success typically generates supporters. I am talking guys born in the late 90s and early 2000s who would have seen the great success and jumped on board.

So a portion of them would be turncoats and band wagoners ;)

I know it’s summer and we’re short on news but I still dream of the day when 30% of list management posts on this forum aren’t about who supported Hawks as a kid.

Reckon we’ve almost got a clean slate on list decisions looking ahead. So many unknowns on how guys will perform and develop over 2023, where our list gaps are and overall how far away finals will look at end of 2023.
