Position 2023 Midfielders

Anyone else considering Newcombe? Mitchell and O'Meara both gone, dont know too much about their midfield, but I am confident enough that they were the only three notable ones? Price at 478 who loves contested footy and tackles well, awkward price, but cheap enough to average 105 and keep as an M8. He will be the main cog in the midfield, you would think?

I’d prefer Hopper if going a mid price mid. Much cheaper.

Haha, mate I was naively banging on about what a good prospect he was for a week or so here until I realised (ie I was duly persuaded) that I can't back him to either be a top 10 scoring mid or to earn 150k.

About two minutes later I saw him and his price.

The only big issue is he plays for the ****ing orange team, known around this board as completely ****ing your supercoach life up. campaigners, absolute genuine campaigners

Umm, he joined the yellow and black team like three months ago?

Gerard Healy has named who he believes will be the best player in the AFL in 2023.

Kane Cornes on Tuesday named the 10 players who he believes could be the best player in the AFL in 2023.

Responding to Cornes on SEN’s Sportsday, the 1988 Brownlow Medallist picked out Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli.

“If you had to ask me who would be the best player in the competition next year, I’m going for Marcus Bontempelli,” Healy told SEN’s Sportsday.

“I think the Bont, he was almost the best player in the competition this year, but he also had to deal with lots of injury issues.

“He didn’t win his club best and fairest, he didn’t make All-Australian side, but his impact was still enormous even though he didn’t have as much of the ball.

Healy going out on a limb there ffs.

at 450k surely this pick needs to be considered more.

if he was a forward, would everyone have him in their team?
No, he showed in the finals that he’s still capable of tearing a game apart, but his body can’t handle doing it every week. They’ll be nursing him throughout the season so he can be at his best when they really need him.

One player I am very interested to see is Lachie Ash. I have seen a couple of Videos where Kingsley has been talking him up massively. His stats are interesting as well it looks like his best position is across Half back and he has had a few big games with 100+ SC scores playing in that position. If he does get put in the Half Back role then he could have a breakout season. Only problem is he is $338k Mid only so is more than Hopper and Sheed but he could have DPP by Round 6. He definately be a watch for me in the pre-season games. He is perfect for that Breakout year 56 games and it will be his 4th year.

IMO a year to load up in the mids. I always go light on and bolster other areas but with dpp coming during the year I think it’s worth going 5 superstars and Hopper.

Oliver
Neale
Macrae
Bont
Steele

My 5 atm. Could easily change with Miller and co tho.

Noah Anderson is someone I like to break out, worth waiting for tho. Similar to Brayshaw this year.

I agree. I think that there is plenty of value in mid-range forwards and some cheap defenders too. Rucks are a bit of an unknown. Ive currently gone with Oliver/Macrae/Touk/Steele/Titch/Green as my top 6 and then Hopper at 7. I'm very much favouring stacking the mids and then going mid-priced madness this season with the uncertainty created by the resurgence of the sub rule but also players like Fyfe/Hopper/Yeo being great value. Then there are plenty of players with experience and job security like O.Allen/Coffield/King/McLean/Bruce/McKenna even Ratagulea available for bargain basement price.

with all the love for fyfe. why none for dangermouse.

if hes fit and ready to go for round 1. no reason he cant churn out a 100avg until he eventually breaks down. heck id almost take a 90 avg @ 450k

also are we sleeping on newcombe?? now with titch gone. it might impact his scoring.

this finish to the season is way too good to be ignored. especially at 478k

Is it? 3 tons in the second half of the season (and 6 overall) doesn't really demand selection for mine.

Also surely at that price, you'd like to have seen him hit $500k at some point this season, but he never even hit what he is priced at for next year.

yeah you dont generally see old premos bounce back to high scoring.. good point.

3 huge scores in the last 5 games.. surely hes due to take it up a notch too.

124, 111, and 105 aren't really huge scores. At least, they're not big enough to justify half his scores being sub-80.

Plus if you're picking him based off his finish to the season, surely you pick Rowbottom instead.

8-rd average of 108 (inc. finals) vs 5-rd average of 96. He's marginally cheaper, and his spike in scoring coincided with him being released from his defensive role in the midfield. No danger of him being tagged either.

Another option for about the same price. Injury free this PS, could explode.

Red Bull can't even touch the footy unless it's at a stoppage. No offensive spread or uncontested footy whatsoever.

In games where the ball is just being chipped around he's borderline awful. Hate to say it as i love the ranga, but until that changes I'm staying away.

You're probably right, but I'd still back him to out-score Duke or Row-bum this year.

I agree with the other poster.
Danger showed in finals he can still be the best in bursts but his body wont let him do it for 23 games straight anymore.
Also geelong have about 30 afl players to get into the 22 (holmes back in plus bruhn henry bowes et al) older guys like danger/hawk/duncan/tuohy/smith etc are going to get heavily rotated and miss games so others can play.

I will post this here because most of them are Midfielders.

These are the players that had the most 130+ SC Scores in 2022
Great insight if looking for Captain options in 2023

R.Laird 10
C.Oliver 9
T.Miller 9
J.Witts 7
C.Petracca 7
C.Mills 7
A.Brayshaw 7
Z.Merrett 7
J.Macrae 6
P.Cripps 6
L.Neale 6
M.Bontempelli 5
M.Gawn 5
J;Steele 4
J.Sinclair 4
LDU 3

This could also be a reason why Lachie Neale isn't in many teams blueiris;)
