List Mgmt. 2023 National Draft prospects

Something tells me there’s zero chance he’s there at our current pick and if he is I’m a no.

His movement at stoppage means he’s either currently incorrectly rated and will be more popular come draft night or he’s fundamentally flawed in areas that are crucial for inside mids (defensive game, competitiveness, engine, concentration, lack of production etc). That piece of play you highlighted was top drawer and the way he moves at that size is prototype AFL footballer, IMO. For comparison Allan was more raw and didn’t show any of those same midfield traits this time last year.

FWIW I err toward his rating being wrong, but of course you’ll never know without access to the same vision and if he’s in the 20-25 bracket this draft has been underrated, IMO.
It’s really strange, when you look back at some drafts with hindsight, you can’t comprehend how some players slid / why some were taken so high

It’s almost as if clubs have decided on options.

He seems to have potential from tape footage but I guess it’s just what needs clubs have - hopefully if we get him we look back and wonder how

Cal Twomey reporting today we are deciding between using 1 or 2 selections in national draft
Saw that! I never get this right, but my maths says that locks in a DFA addition? Unless the 1 or 2 is Begg 4 year rookie dependent?

We could get to the minimum 36 on senior list with rookie promotions and then fill vacancies via rookie draft and SSP
Or pick a DFA as you say

If we only use one…that would mean we need to trade out pick 33 into a pick for next year ….
Would be wise to go into the draft with 2 active list spots and let it all unfold rather than snookering ourselves into a corner for no reason.
Alternatively club could also trade our pick 19 into next year particularly on the night where a certain player could be available that another club rates highly

Or use 19 + 33 to move up a couple spots to grab a player we really like?

Highlights are very good but not one kick on the left - hopefully just a random miss in the package.
Otherwise, heavily one sided players are a red flag for me.

I think his tackling has been good this year. Others in the midfield at Sandy were a bit more one-way traffic (Sanders and Ashcroft in particular). He ran a decent time trial at the State Combine from memory (6.24). He also had some games with 30+ disposals at Melbourne Grammar, along with Ryley Sanders, despite that team generally getting nutted. He doesn't get as many touches as Ashcroft or Sanders, but very few in the entire Coates League did - maybe McKercher, Stephens.....

His highlight clips look great. I think his kicking has improved, but I would have said it was a bit of a weakness a year ago, but he learnt to lower his eyes a bit.

But he was the best player at my son's club footy last season but we didn't see him much due to APS footy.

He was a late starter in pre-season and accordingly, wasn't at the mark for consideration for Nationals.
By the end of the season, he'd pushed Will Brown, the Vic Metro and Sandy captain out of the starting midfield rotations.
He can hit the scoreboard too.

From Rob Harding (Sandy coach)
Meanwhile, Melbourne Grammar boy Charlie Edwards is flourishing in defense.

“Edwards had an interrupted back end of pre-season due to his school cricket commitments. He’s a Bendigo boy who’s down here boarding at Melbourne Grammar. He’s got great run and carry out of defense and the way he moves is eye-catching.”

Edwards’ versatility is also exciting Harding, who hopes that Edwards can continue to push his name out in lights in the coming future.

“I was really impressed with his defensive work as a third tall defender. He can play deep in that role or can play higher as a running defender. He’s been super impressive and hopefully there’s some opportunities for him to play some representative football going forward.”

He was a House Captain at school too.

I think he's underrated.

“School” can infect their students with softness.

Only 1 draft pick seems odd to me - we've currently got 4 list vacancies. And Kelly and Begg yet unknown could be 6 vacancies. We did well with SSP (SPS - not sure of the name) last year. Might be keen on having blokes train with us again to fill a couple of slots.

We've been exceptional with Rookie, SSP, MSD recruits - like the idea of 2 draftees, 1 list upgrade from Rookie to Main, and then backfill with selections from the Rookie, SSP and MSD

We need to get collard before WC or Fremantle. Has plenty of upside and would suit our style. When Bobby moves to the wing, Lance will be ready to step up and rip the competition apart. If you are a lover of pure talent then he has it in spades
I've been watching Collards play since the 70's and they certainly have talent.

Someone was telling me today there was talk on radio last week about our list and that we are required to keep spots available to cover $$$ we are paying to Treloar & Grundy. Did anybody hear this? Is it correct?

No, we have to take the same number of players on to our list as everyone else afaik. We’ve never had to keep spots open before, heck, we technically had 45 on our list this year with the addition of Markov after Dean went on the inactive list.

So I'd like to think we are a good chance of trading out of our pick 19 in 2023 to beef up our 2024 draft hand.

Looking at the above, who of the clubs would have an interest in doing a deal?

I've jotted down some thoughts, would love to hear some others thoughts as well:

  • GC - After their picks are absorbed for 2-3 players prior to our 19, would they have an interest in trading for our 19? A deal could look like 19 for 2024 end of R1 comp (pick 20)
  • Freo - Could we somehow get our F1 back if they like someone still available at our pick? 19 and hawks F2 for our own F1 and their owned F2?
  • Richmond - I think the most likely buyer - 19 for both of the F2's they own
  • Carlton - 19 for 22/28 and their future 2nd
  • Sydney - 19 for 2024 end of R1 compo (19)

It probably is a reason why we prefer 36 and 6 rookies to 38 and 4 rookies

This is the type of stuff you don’t generally get as a casual observer so I appreciate the context. I think it often gets overlooked that quality prospects can get pushed down the midfield queue when there’s other genuine stars in the squad. It reads like a few small things building into a bigger reason for him to be down the order and the biggest one is probably no champs. Along with Lloyd I feel like that’ll be held against them if they aren’t taken top 20.
