Personally I think clubs need to start being more ruthless when it comes to making sure the opposition pay full price for the players they have priority access to.

If I'm West Coast I'm making a bid on Walter at 1 because a) some observers rate him as the best prospect in this years draft and b) Gold Coast have claims on 4 players expected to be bid on within the first 25 selections so why give them any extra leg up?

I recall Nick saying at the time of his drafting that he was disappointed he wasn't bid on at 1 because he had worked hard to get into those calculations.

2 years down the track however and with a Premiership medal and rising star award to his name I doubt it's still weighing on his mind.

In reality whether Reid is taken at 1 or 2 ultimately doesn't mean much as it's just a number and he'll be judged on his career performance. For the club who bids on him however they're in the business of winning Premierships and are in competition with 17 other teams to achieve it each season. Give them nothing extra if you don't have to!

While it benefited the club I support I've always thought it was a nonsense that Daicos wasn't bid on at 1 when he was clearly in that conversation and we were never doing anything other than matching the bid.

It was a stupid move by North and the fact that JHF wanted out just 12 months later only highlighted why putting the optics of drafting the No.1 player wasn't worth the missed opportunity of denying your opposition an advantage (no matter the degree) when you had the chance.

Some good points here.

in 2022 GWS were happy to take Cadman one instead of bidding for ashcroft, it backs him (cadman) in, and also he gets the $10k for getting picked one (nothing to sneeze at, young lad moving from country vic to sydney he is probably going to need it)

I was a little shocked when Nick said it irked him in 2022 not being bidded on first, but like you said I dont think he cares now

Hopefully Charlie Edwards is still available at our first pick

Would be a great replacement for pendles in the coming years.

Great size
Elite kicking and decision making
Burst speed out of the centre
Captain material in the future.
Setting the bar very high… if even was a Crisp replacement in a few years would be very happy

Collingwood officials travelled to Burnie on Friday to meet with Geordie Payne.

Sounds like a fly type player

Imagine being a young kid in Burnie, with not much of a draft profile, and Collingwood officials come knocking. How exciting for him.🙏

Fwiw it’s not $10k it’s a $20k “portfolio” if I recall, so not really going to help much with anything in the short term, unless it’s been changed again this year.

what do you mean by this?
Green went on the unlaced podcast a couple of months back and unloaded on the underage system re Allies v Metro kids. He basically said a metro kid coming out of the Dragons averaging 13ppg with “scope” is always rated higher than a 25ppg Allies kid. The Allies had a ripping carnival this year and will have close to half the top 20 picks so there’s going to be quality coming out of there this year and I think it deserves more attention.
Cleary probably turns into another Gulden knowing the Swans and their development of their academy.
That’s exactly where my heads at with him! I have no doubt they match an early 20’s bid, but if he winds up the 25th best player from this draft I’ll go he.

I absolutely dont want a ruckman with our first pick
You’re pretty safe there. The only kids in the draft pool that look AFL ruckman are Green and Edwards and neither look likely to be options for our first pick. The likes of Goad, Reid, Murphy and ZZ will be KP or at most ruck relief at the top level.

I'm a fan of Payne. He won the B&F this year for Tassie in a squad that had the Morrish medallist, Leake, Callinan and more heralded players. What's interesting is he didn't play TSL footy and instead played country footy up the coast. The NWFL is a rough footy league and to play against men hardens you. Mihocek's a Burnie boy, too, so he'd have some support. He didn't test at the national draft combine.

As much as this pains me to say these words, we might consider doing what Brisbane did a few years' ago after the infamous draft class that all went home. They took players from the same side to combat them going back home. Here, we might consider taking two Tassie kids.
There's certainly some logic in that reasoning. In addition, if/when the Tassie team is established, there will be a pull for the local boys so there trade value may be perceived to be higher and we might get overs...

But it's true. Allies kids are often neglected. Part of the reason Ryley Sanders went to Melbourne Grammar is because Tassie kids are all too often neglected and he wanted to avoid what happened to a certain hyped prospect whose name cannot be uttered on these boards.
IDK. If they were often neglected we’d see a bunch of them getting picked up post their draft year which is more a rarity than regularity. The vast majority of elite players also still come from Victoria or WA. At a base level I think the pendulums swung too far away from production so I’m willing to buy what he’s selling.

This Will Green guy has you mesmerised for some reason, I'm not seeing what you are seeing but that doesn't mean much.
I might have gotten a bit carried away from 1 highlights video, but I just think he looks a ripping prospect for his role, where the same isn't the case for the others likely to be around at our pick. Collard is the other one I would love to get to us.

I know everyone has gone off ruck, but I still think it's the position where teams get the biggest comparative advantage against other teams.
