List Mgmt. 2023 National Draft prospects

I'm certainly under the impression that anyone picked up as an SSP goes onto the rookie list only, and don't know of any examples of those recruits going straight on to a primary list. I would think the primary list would need to be finalised after tomorrow's pre-season draft, with a minimum of 36 players, and that we may end up elevating another rookie (along with Johnson and Markov), if we don't take two more selections tonight.

It's all a bit confusing as don't you generally have to nominate prior to the draft the rookies you are wishing to upgrade and we have only nominated the two you mention. Perhaps another window of opportunity exists after the draft so clubs have the flexibility of filling PL spots with upgrades if they didn't like what was on offer later in the draft.

Supposedly as of yet the AFL publicly at least haven't indicated when this years final list lodgement is due. Another confusion if it's meant to be tomorrow or Thursday (like last year).

Clearly if we only have one "live" selection tonight we must have a mechanism available to meet our minimum primary list requirements.

I can't imagine it's the PSD as I see no advantage to us unless a lot of shenanigans are at play with Wingard and he nominates with terms which we but not Hawthorn will meet. Is that even possible?

P.S- We're clearly all in the 1% of Collingwood supporters. I mean, who else would worry about all this shite?:drunk: :p

You are correct that the SSP acquired players (as well as players acquired via the MSD) are brought onto the rookie list. But it doesn’t have to be for a vacant rookie list position. The vacant list spot can be a senior list position and it can be vacant either because the spot was never filled or it can be vacant because a player is inactive (usually due to injury)

That doesn’t seem right to me because of salary cap implications and I always thought the 36-6/37-5/38-4 were minimum requirements? That’s not to suggest you’re wrong more that I don’t remember a club entering a season with 35 or less on the senior list due to choosing to keep it vacant.

I'm not going to argue Babylove mightn't be right because God knows the AFL loves it's grey areas but weren't final list lodgements (which include the minimum 36 PL spots) always due prior to the SSP selection period?

As time goes by I think we’ll see clubs increasingly use the SSP system because the access you get across a training block is reflecting an increased hit rate v the speculation of the rookie draft or late national draft picks. Three rookie slots for six train on players over three live rookie picks every day of the week please and thank you.
The issue is how many of the blokes you're interested in do you get to train with you when 17 other teams are also sending out invites?

Does anyone have any intel as to who we will pick up tonight. My Jets contact has told me everything about Logan Morris but when I asked him if we are speaking to him, he wouldn't tell me. You can't choose your relo's I suppose

I can tell you one thing. Don’t listen to Cal Twomey or Derek Hine. They had him projected at 26 😂😂

It's silly to call Dodoro a genius, but equally silly to criticize him for trading up to get our guy. It was impossible for Essendon to know for certain that Geelong were not going to take Caddy, or predict whether another team would trade up. We obviously had Caddy as a priority, and he was the best list fit for us in our draft range. We played it safe, and lost what is currently pick 36 by doing so. I'm fine with that.

Correct and the other query is if you’re one of those guys the reality is you’re probably a decent chance of getting senior minutes, but are multiple players getting senior minutes? Probably not. It’s a balancing act for club and players.

It's a fair point that another team could have looked to trade up with Geelong and that was a gamble Essendon weren't willing to take.

Once Geelong agreed in principle to the deal however you can all but guarantee they weren't after Caddy because you aren't letting go of a top 10 player you rate ahead of the rest for the sake of pick 31.

In the end Essendon guaranteed themselves the player they wanted while Geelong gained a second round selection for a player they were happy to bypass in favour of O'Sullivan.

I know that 16 players (as things stand) have been upgraded from rookie lists to primary lists (or will officially be tonight), but I would guess that names could still be added tonight, after the national draft has completed, if clubs need to make adjustments to get to 36 on the primary list (assuming virtually no-one will bother with the PSD, and perhaps the same with the DFAs).

And I love every minute of "this shite"; I think it's a fantastic time of the year as a football supporter!!

i had to laugh when i watched that daniel curtin guy get drafted......he was very very very underwhelmed. There's a lot of mommies boys who don't want to venture across the nullabor, but to their credit, a lot of kids from WA do the trip and end up staying in the east for the duration because they want to play in the mecca.

But when they are weighing up the possibilities, they never consider being drafted to adelaide or port. Things can be limited culture wise over here in the West but at least we have the weather and the beaches. Things are even better for the boys from the western suburbs who attend the private schools and have guaranteed access to UWA and high paying position in a high rise tower and endless photo opportunities in the sunday times.

Giving all of that up to go and live in a ghetto is not on the radar for a kid like Curtin. He looked like someone who had been given a life sentence. Maybe we can launch an escape plan for him sometime in the future.

By worse… do you believe there is a difference between a KPP proposition available in the 30s or a midfield proposition available in the 30s ?

From here it’s blanket speculation… so best we pick a player who fits a need rather than a mid or small forward who is already surplus and/or inadequate compared to other young players getting a game in McInness, Macrae, Allan, Ryan, etc

‘Best available’ irrespective at this shallow end of the draft irrespective of list needs is irresponsible
It’s a simple decision between “talent” ie best available or less talent and therefore far more speculative, to “fill a need”.
Clearly the later is far less likely to make it, otherwise they would have been picked earlier.
In your example both players are of equal notional talent being in the 30’s, therefore it’s not relevant to this debate - you’d pick for need every time.

The more usual debate is around unequal talent, where the player filling “need” is rated far lower than the best available.
And IMO you pick best available in such circumstances.

Schoenmaker is also an outside chance at Brisbane, which was one of several clubs to strike a night one trade with Gold Coast, packaging up multiple selections to help the Suns bank more points to match academy bids while acquiring the second pick of the second round, which is now Pick 31.

But multiple sources believe the Lions are looking to select a tall with that pick, with 203cm Gippsland Power forward-ruck Archer Reid strongly linked, especially after the Kangaroos took Wil Dawson with one of their three late first-round picks on Monday night.

Reid had also been linked to Collingwood at Pick 37. But Richmond, which is expected to look at a key-position player with one of its picks, will strongly consider Reid if he’s still available at Pick 35. Both the Pies and Tigers also have an interest in Western Jets goalkicker Logan Morris.

Perhaps we're all worrying about nothing and we take 2 picks tonight.

Here me out.

Yes sure it has small list and salary cap ramifications but given we are the reigning Premier and will be entering the rookie draft with the final pick of the 1st round if some player we like enough is still available then securing them might be the better outcome than hoping they make it through a further 17 selections (plus the remainder of the ND).

You feel like a player we have been casually linked to by one person or another over the last couple of months will still be available at our 3rd pick.

Id sooner give a WA boy a shot than taking a risk on another Geelong pansy boy again

If we only draft one tonight, we'll upgrade a rookie. However, 3 rookie spots to fill from SSP and MSD seems excessive, but if they think the odds are better with blokes who've been further screened by training with us, it's the way to go - I suppose?
Thanks for that. I was going to ask if we have a mid season pick.

Reid won’t get to us unless we trade up

That's what happened last night. Why not tonight?
Lol, there are plenty on here whining about 'why didn't we select a tall' 'is Hine allergic to talls' 'trust us not to select a tall' 'never going to get a key forward/defender' 'going to have the smallest forward line in history' 'not another midfielder' yadda yadda yadda...
