Training report: Wed Feb 15th.

Let me explain this -- I may have gotten lost, the bus just didn't go where I wanted it to go. It was heading toward Nerang somewhere and out of the way -- I felt like I was in the country, there was farms lol So I jumped off and ordered an Uber. Got there in time.
The boys started about 9:30am, I sat under some nice shady trees, where the boys would come and get drinks.

Hollands was the first to have a chat to me. Followed by Ainsworth and Ballard.

There are so many players, I couldn't even list them if I tried, but don't think anyone was missing though.

Rehab group:
  • Ellis was doing work by himself, he didn't seem bothered by anything. Wasn't even running with a trainer, just by himself, and doing some other smaller tasks; hopefully it's just load management than anything else.
  • Budarick and Powell did a running session, as they work through their rehabs. Powell didn't look too far off, tbh. Budarick looked in good shape as well, let him have some better luck this year with those knees.
  • Weller seemed to be in full training, was involved in everything that I could see. His recovery has been insane given his injury he is coming back from.
  • King looked pretty good out there, he was twisting and turning when doing drills and goal kicking. I don't think there is an issue with confidence in his knee. So fingers crossed he'll be much more stronger.

It was a pretty light session, maybe since it was mid week, and they would have had an exhausting one on monday, and then Friday they would have a big session.. Intraclub? But that's alright, it was nice to watch nonethless.
These boys are huge. Last time I saw Ballard was 2020, and he had just done his shoulder, so been a big couple years for him.

To start off with, they coaches got the boys in a circle, and to announced ... it was Moyle's 21st birthday, there was lots of roars and applauds. They sung happy birthday to him before getting on with the session. His family was down for the occasion.

Warms up began and things continued on.

The group then is split into half. There was a select bunch who did running sessions around the length of the group, must have done a couple kms probably 3-4 times.
Then the other group was in the centre of the ground doing some ball handling skills.

The boys then took off their runners and put on their boots. Luko came and grabbed a glove to put over his hand -- for any reason? He was then called "Travis Cloke" by the boys, because of the Glove, which Cloke used to do in games. So did he hurt his hand? I'm not sure, I'm not the best person to comment as it would have been prior to now.

One of the drills they did was kicking into space, and the forward would have to lead up to the ball carrier. There w as lots of goal kicking around the goal posts at both ends.

A couple groups in a circle did some kick-mark, handball-mark to one another..

One of the main drills they rotated in groups was a ground ball drill, where it was placed on the ground; a coach would then blow his whistle and one player had to pick it up and move it toward F50, finding your teammates as the best option to move it forward.

Ellis I noticed left pretty early, probably half way though. But again, it was only a light skills session and they could be managing his loads.

Player observations:

Constable
-- Not something i've overly noticed over the years, both he has good hands, big body and quite tall. His ball use is quite good, I'm definitely interested to see how he goes in his half back role. May be the role that gets him in the team.

Hollands - for someone his age, he's a big boy. Or maybe they all look big compared to me haha. Either way, he looks in good condition, quite vocal out on the ground.

Anderson - You can definitely see the leader that he is, he commands attention. Differently than Touk does, and speaking of Touk, just the ultimate professional. See, listen, do. I wouldn't be surprised if many just try to replicate what he does.

King, looks fitter than ever. Moving around in drills with ease; sometimes his teammates burn him as an option. The team is gonna be better having him out on the park this season.

I wish they would wear training tops with their numbers on it. The pies do (well, mostly) because with so many players and newbies, there were lots I hadn't gotten a handle on by just vision quite yet, especially since a lot has changed since my last session 3 years ago.

I did notice that the assistants basically run training, Dew I don't think interfered and just let the coaches do what they do best. I didn't even realise he was out there until when it had finished lol But this is the way it should be. Its a partnership, the coaching business. You shouldn't have to do everything yourself.

I’ve honestly never thought about going to a regular day to day training session. Did you just turn up hoping / assuming you got the time right, or did you check in advance? I have time, I should check it out from time to time

I think most clubs start their sessions around 9am, so I just turned up and hoped for the best. But I went in pretty confident that's what time it would be. I wasn't sure it would be earlier.

Great write up Jen, thanks. Who is your player to watch this year?
From everything Ive heard, Humphrey would have to be the one. But other than him, I'm very curious about Luko. Can ge excell up forward? Just never seemed his natural positon (many kids were stars in their junior days but AFL level can be different) I always liked him down back or wing, but we'll see. He's definitely a watch.

I forgot to say this.. but DMac impressed me. Reckon he could be in for an interesting year. Looks fitter, stronger, and his skills were good from what I could see.

Oh, and I reckon Sharp is the other thats a watch, especially given his contract status. But he did lead the pack in the running sessions, and there was a good vibe around.
