Training 2023 Pre Season

Anyone see anything with Leo Connolly at training this morning?

He’s been on the exercise bikes the whole time, unsure if anything is wrong or not

NWM, Matteas, Connolly, Keeler, King, Campbell also on the bikes. Matteas was participating in earlier drills so maybe just part of his program.

Billings a mixture of participating in main drills and running laps.

I'm not buying into any of that business. The whole thing is too murky to draw opinions from and the Scum have a toxic corporate culture of politics and back stabbing.

My personal belief is that Gubby will source the trade targets, Toce will select the draftees, SOS will handle the contracts and TPP. they will work collaboratively, and they will all be overseen by Geoff Walsh. The notion that the one individual has a singular responsibility without oversight in a compartmentalized business structure is antiquated and binary in thought.

Whatever the strategy might be has already been determined long before SOS got involved and at the most it'll be on him to execute it in the short term. They are not starting from scratch.
Not buying into what?

Him being sacked or him being bitter about it?

Lads because I’m obsessed with the Pou I decided to watch some of his u18 games again. Specifically, the start of the SA metro game in Geelong he was absolutely dominant. Had 5 touches in the first few minutes and was one of SA's best I think he finnished with like 11 for the qtr before going off injured IIRC. This matters because this game was the epitome of u18 for the SA boys and our guy stepped up like it was a final. I keep pumping him up and I know everyone wants to manage expectations but this kid has it all in terms of gameplay.
Hurt his calf at training today

I'm going to play the devils advocate here.

if you read about Patrick Cripps journey, he was terrible in front of the camera at the start of his career and even had a phobia for it. The club got him public speaking courses and also instilled confidence in his speaking abilities via the use of mentors.

Maybe our club should follow this route for Steele.
It could have been worse, I’m thinking Jeff Fenech.

As a serious question to all the saints fans here... Are our expectations actually high for 2023?

To me this is a consolidation season, finishing 6th to 8th would be a huge bonus but the point is for Ross and co to settle a structure and gameplan and figure out who on our list is gonna deliver it.

I hate riting a year off before it starts but surely were not actually expecting 23 to be a bounce back year?
I am with you.
Expectations are low for this year, with the exception of seeing a more professional outfit on the park.

7 or 8th and finals nothing less

So if im reading this right (and its a small sample straw poll to be fair) all this chat of "Ross has expectations" is outside of the saints faithful and likely the four walls of the club.

Seems alot of other teams think we need to be substantially better results wise this year or the Ross decision was a fail.

Really odd to me, but i guess being relevant is a good thing.

Who cares what other club supporters think? This year doesn’t need to be an improvement ladder wise, I do want to see an improvement in skills and effort but if it takes a year for the game plan to stick, that’s okay with me.

I’ve been viewing this year as the start of a rebuild more or less. Back at square one and that’s a good thing.

Fair point, i was more trying to ascertain where all this "noise" about the saints needing to show substantial improvement THIS YEAR had come from.

Ive seen it in a few spot on BF and in the media and it was just perplexing to me, i certainly dont expect us to improve substantially (i could even see a slight regression if we have gutted the existing gameplan).

I just have no idea where we are at still. It really takes the coach out of it to me. We will get a real read on the list quality but we could probably have made Lyon look like a genius if we could have turned the injuries around. Right now we are starting with a mass of injuries so look like starting slow at least.

So much depends on what others do too. Carlton, Port, Adelaide, Essendon, Gold Coast, Tigers and Dogs etc all have claims on a rise up the ladder too. A lot will come down to how the players adjust to the new game plan, structure and injury now on top of that.

The thing that drove me crazy last year was that our game style was boring, dated and limited and wasn't able to adapt once we'd been worked out which was pretty much a repeat of the year before. The players seemed flakey and uncertain about how much they wanted success under him too.

Lyon doesn't suffer players who want a footballer's lifestyle without the contribution. For that reason alone I think it will be a good way to sort the wheat from the chaff.

I’d be expecting to make finals
We were not that far off with a shit game plan shit coaching and some injuries with players playing out of position

I expect to sneak in but won’t be upset if we don’t tbh
