Training 2023 Pre Season

If you think Ross did that little you’re mistaken..he also did triple M & would have watched countless games.
One of the biggest changes under Ross has been the amount of video sessions he has had our boys doing.

Educating what he wants via watching the best teams doing it last season.

Then they practice it.

Then they review match sim.

Players have apparently been mind blown at the things he picks up. Attention to detail such as player positioning at stoppage or during defensive transition.

He has absolutely nailed a few blokes aswell and simultaneously put his arm around the kids like Pou/windy/NAS/Owens etc to just take the game on.

Was he?

Alright im not even sure when you gotta go back to...
Got 20 Brownlow votes to finish equal-eighth (and 15 votes off first) and came 4th in the coaches votes, so he was playing at about the level Steele was playing at in 2020/2021.

Definitely not “prime Bont” of a couple of years ago. No surprise, given he didn’t turn 21yo until after that season finished.

They didn’t have anyone else in the top 20 of the coaches votes.

Amazing to think that it’s 7 years ago now that they won that flag.

All players were sighted in my hour or so at Moorabbin this morning.
Jones and DMac wandered passed on their way to the pool, neither appeared inhibited.
Keeler, Van Ess were running laps and did some routine ball work.
Again, neither seemed inhibited.
Ross was running laps too, and joined in the routine ball work with Keeler and Van Ess. Ross had his right calf very tightly bandaged. Think he is being managed as a result.
King and Hayes were both in the gym, both came out and neither seemed in any discomfort. Not a moon boot or arm sling to be seen.
Hotton wandered across to the pool as well. As with the others, whatever injury he has suffered, it is not apparent.
The other 34 or 35 trained. Same structure as previous weeks.
I think we might be close to having a full list soon.
Just a word about Caminiti and Sharman.
Both know the value of ball flight, both read it very well, both took great marks, and both took them over Cordy.
But they are very different.
Sharman has had more exposure so you will understand his particular skill set.
Caminiti has quite an unusual gait, tall, well built, not quick, reasonably agile, runs his patterns well, and can take a pack mark. More your Warren Tredrea/Taylor Walker style than Sharman’s style.
Complimentary to Coops (and definitely Allison), not in competition.
The downside is the disposals that I witnessed.
Two misses on goal (one after beating Cordy in that mark) is not a deal breaker, given the sample size and it’s only his first official day. But Coops nailed his shot after his mark over Cordy.
(Neither is this a criticism of Cordy, he was just well beaten in both instances).

PS: The President is a right footer with a very awkward drop punt kicking style.
Did not make the distance from the pocket from 35m, and offline anyway. Needs some Goddard tough love.

are the coaches picking up the skills on disposals and goal kicking? Are they trying to change the players kicking efficiency, goal efficency?

From what I’ve seen: Not to any extent greater than with Richo or Ratts.
What they do seem more focused on is what they are doing with the ball, and without.
For example, one exercise consists of thirteen players with two groups of six wearing the same colour (blue, yellow) with one guy wearing pink. The pink guys role seemed to be running through the structure as the linkman.
Another is three sets of four (yellow, blue, pink) practicing entry and exit I50.
Clearly, the colours mean something likely offence, defence etc.

They have been doing more work and in a more professional structure I.e man on mark. Man running off the line when players snap from the boundary etc then I can ever remember.

He might have been asked specific questions during an interview. Who knows?

What do people who attend training think? Is it the same this year as last year?
Totally and utterly different. So much better structured and intense, so many more drills with enthusiasm, and so many more voices, it has clicked up several notches.

I don't believe it is just me with rose coloured glasses either, many other regular track watchers have mentioned the same.

One thing I noticed is that every single player is lean. There were a few that seemed to be carrying extra last year. Not sayign they weren't fit, it may be that Misson is concentrating on other areas of fitness and this has resulted in slightly leaner changed body shapes.

Great work sunny
I tried to articulate what I thought on Caminiti last Friday, however you have described him so much better.
Kicking at goal could improve, but if he was a dead eye he wouldn't be a supplementry list player taken with the last spot on the list 2 days before deadline.
A lot to work with, my description was that he looked like a natural footballer with lots of natural ability to get to the ball and stick the mark. He did himself no disservice with his match sim performance on Friday, so it is up to the kid to be a sponge, from the players around him and Ross.

Its great to read the update in coaching. It reinforces the difference in approaches as some can teach and explain the game in simple terms and some cant.

Its also great to hear that some players have been challenged - that needed to occur for the players who havent progressed their game.

I thought that last season, the club was sloppy (for want of a better word) in how it was going about things on-field..like there wasn't enough attention to detail in how the guys went about their game. No doubt RL is extremely thorough in his preparation, where Ratts seemed to be more into enpowering the players, at the expense of playing to a system. Dunno..anyway let's see what happens.

The midfield is good enough but we need the wings and half forwards/flanks etc to improve. The Cats get the ball out to the guys outside, we need more of that and to move the ball fast and lock it in. Getting Hill on a wing and players like Billings and DMac fit will help. It sounds like Byrnes is burning up the track and Jones is back as well. Both offer a bit of pace. Geelong and Collingwood played with very minimalist inside midfields but both topped up.
Last year’s midfield was very good of you look at stats. If you look at how they help the side it was average at best which every single person in the media tasted it. And you you have answered why our midfield was average. They played with very minimal inside mids. We had far too many. And those fat to many had no ability to play elsewhere except for being very average.

Fantastic insight. Thank you

Jeez - if I see the word "re-build" again I'll have a f***ing conniption.

Rebuild is a dirty word. We restump, rewire and replumb under Ross.

Seriously though, you would have to have your head in the sand if you can’t see we are in a complete change of tactic that involves targeting youth. We have obviously come to the conclusion that just bringing in a few experienced heads isn’t the answer.

In the space of 2 years we’ve gone from the club with the least 18-21 year olds to one of the most.
Sorry but there was no "change of tactic" in relation to our drafting and trading strategy.

It was a 5 year plan (first years were concentrated on bringing experience to the club and then it was time for the draft).

It was one of the few things the review found had been largely successful and has produced a much better and more well balanced list than we had at the start.

Which goes to my view that this year we will be all in on attracting established talent to the club.

I have no doubt that if we finished off last year better than we did then De Goey would be at the club.

Same aplies to any "name" player who may be available at the end of the season - if we are top 8 and looking like we are on the up then we will be a much more attractive option than if we have gone backwards and are bottom 6.

Being in the media isn't going to have made him a better tactical coach I don't think. Thankfully he doesn't need that to be better coach and the idea that he would lose an understanding of the game is ridiculous I think. But there are plenty of AFL analysts on TV that wouldn't be good coaches.

I actually think it's good he has been able to step away from the intensity of coaching for a while and will have picked up fresh perspectives on how to do things from outside the AFL. Even looking at how to present and edit videos for an audience will be a great asset for a modern day coach.

Totally true. In saying that the list still needs a big turnover.

I rate that rumour up with me going out with Margot Robbie.

Now there’s a thought

This is contrary to the message that the club has been saying. Premierships are built not bought, we need to attack the draft and fill holes in the list there (think Melbourne with Jackson and Pickett). As a fanbase, we've been so obsessed with this idea of bringing in a big fish that we've completely ignored the fundamentals of building a team.
