% of centre attendances / total clearances for the season.
Steele , 66% 94 clearances.
Crouch, 59%. 123 clearances.
Ross , 58.5% 83 clearances.
Gresham, 49%, 74 clearances.
Marshall , ?? , 70 clearances.
Jones , 25% , 38 clearances.
Windhager 18%, 20 clearances.
Sinclair 11% , 39 clearances.
Owens 8%,
Hannebery 4%, 15 clearances.

Now i find this , and it gives totally different stats. In this one the % is the centre bounces attended only in the games they played in.

Gresham attending nearly as much as Crouch, not so much when Jones plays.
Windhager round 22, 5 clearances, but 8 to Crouch. Still pretty good for the kid.
Sinclair 6 in round 2.
Jones not really winning many clearances even when he's in there.

Is Hannebery 4%, 15 clearances playing for Gold Coast this year ?

Hunter attended 70% of bounces in round 1 21, for 7 clearances.
Round 14 22 he was in 17% of the bounces for 3 clearances.

I think i'd prefer him in there to Jones or Ross.

Windhager and Bytel are the other two who have real potential in 2023.

Clearance Stats

Crouch played 22 games & attended 59% of centre bounces for 123 clearances.
Average per game = 5.59

Steele played 18 games & attended 81% of centre bounces for 94 clearances.
Average per game = 5.22

Gresham played 18 games & attended 59% of centre bounces for 74 clearances.
Average per game = 4.11

Ross played 22 games & attended 61% of centre bounces for 83 clearances.
Average per game = 3.77

Jones played 13 games & attended 42% of centre bounces for 38 clearances.
Average per game = 2.93

Sinclair played 22 games & attended 11% of centre bounces for 39 clearances.
Average per game = 1.77 (attends 70% less c/b than Steele for basically half the amount of clearances)

Windhager played 18 games & attended 24% of centre bounces for 20 clearances.
Average per game = 1.11 (not used in centre often)

The above really highlights how good Sinclair is in the middle! I know he is great at HB but gees we mighten need him there if he can win clearances at that rate!

I hope the statisticians at the club can alert RTB to those stats are they are fairly telling!
Are they centre bounce clearances because I thought hardly had any. It’s completely different a centre bounce clearance to one around the ground. He actually had 7 last year. Centre clearances is far from a strength.

Where does it say how many centre clearance he got? He had 7 for the year.

"Part of the (reason for the) move was just not being settled. I was thrown around a bit over my time there and it was more to see where I could play my best footy … and that's down in defence”

Ben Long

I feel like some posters such as Mowman are owed an apology

Don't hold your breath, suddenly the naysayers will be nowhere to be seen.

Centre Clearances 2022

Crouch: 49. 22nd in the AFL.
Gresham 42. Steel 42. 37th in the AFL.

Jones 19
Marshall 18
Ryder 8
Sinclair 7
Lionert 5
Battle 2
Wood 2
Butler 2
NWM 2
Webster 1
Byrnes 1

Sinclair's CC's vs bounce attendances, is probably way better than Jones.

It's not as though he wasnt given the opportunity

He just couldn't perform enough to keep his spot in the back 6

We have better options to play that role

Seems like the right move for him and the club

He wanted to play as a defender and got swung all over the place.

From week to week. Sometimes quarter to quarter.

That’s tough when you are trying to establish yourself.

I think our best option with Gresh would be to encourage him to be the ball player and use that evasiveness to create space for outside players (read better kicks) and find them with hands.

Imagine Scott West with Greshs evasiveness. He makes the first tackler miss and draws a second or third and we have SPACE at stoppages. Rather than his first instinct which is evade and then throw it on the boot around his body.

He could be a real weapon at stoppages but not if his mentality is mung punt first.

Yep, that would be his best bet for sure.

He is an awful kick when he plays in the midfield.

This isn’t due to the fact that he can’t kick. He can kick a drop punt with no issue when he tries. Unfortunately more times than not he thinks it’s a better option to throw it on the boot.

Mostly I think he makes poor decisions and thinks he’s under more pressure than he actually is.

This has nothing to do with what others have said about his kicking and 100% based on me watching him each week.

Which in a better system probably starts to give him more mental space and time. Melbourne were one of the worst kicking sides leading up to their premiership year, Langdon left Freo as a liability due to kicking and was just about the most important player in their 2021 side.

I watched a bit of Richmond over the last few years, and reckon their footskills are pretty good

They famously changed their game plan to suit their deficiencies instead of waiting for perfection. I think they improved over time but always had a few excellent kicks even early on..

Please don't even mention Gresh in the same breath as GAJ, Gresh will never get anywhere near these stats ever

I wasn’t saying gresh will be the next GAJ. Just that maybe it would be good to model his game on him.

Too Ill disciplined for defence. His brain fades give away goals. Pretty sure that’s why they moved him forward where he proved to be an ordinary kick at goal. Might have made a half decent midfielder.

Yeh i think their lack of foot skills was overstated a fair bit because they have "chaos mode" at times where its just get the footy forward at all costs.

They actually dont do it as much as people think and (especially out of their back half) theyre all pretty good users.

Houli particularly had insane kicking but their back 6 were all good. It was more in general play. They became more skilled with time.

Was he good enough to hold down a position or is that just the words of a disgruntled ex-employee.
He wasn't. He was given multiple opportunities at half back but we had too many better options in the position.

And he doesn't seem disgruntled. In the full article, he mentioned how much he loved his time at St Kilda and thought he contributed a lot but he just wanted to play defence permanently.

Liked the club, couldn't stand the coach, would tell him he was playing back then switch him forward at selection. If Lyon had have come on board before trade time Long would still be with us.
Lyon would have got the best out of him.
