We really need to overachieve at every draft to make up for lost time. Nas is a huge loss because even if we get a couple of draft picks for him, losing a good one and sinking all that development into him is a kick.

A couple of years ago the 2017 draft seemed to set us up and now we have Clark possible gone, (we traded out of the FR of the previous draft to get this pick) Coff still not best 22 after a bad injury interruption, Clavarino gone, Paton looking like he's not made a jump since also injured, Langlands and Pierce gone from the rookie list. If we get the picks wrong we are going to struggle.

Melbourne traded out of the first rounds of that draft and still got Petty, Fritsch and Spargo.

Brisbane finished down the ladder and picked up Rayner, Zac Bailey and Starcevich.

Dogs finished higher than us and got Naugthon and Ed Richards.

That's the kind of drafting we need to get to. Your head recruiter is your most important staff member.
That drafting was ok apart Clav. Our development has also been simply awful.

Something needs to be done about the amount of power players have. We aren't the first team to cop the homesick player and won't be the last, but there has to be a tipping point where teams just end up drafting less talented hometown players and compromising themselves, which negates the point of a national draft. It's obviously not as simple as this, but I think in the next bargaining agreement a massive pay increase in exchange for tighter trading and contractual restrictions has to brought to the table.
The issue is it effects the smaller Vic clubs more than any other, because good Vic kids just request to go to the bigger clubs in a saturated market, not to mention they also lose draft capital due to highly rated Academy kids that are top 5-10 draft projections.

If an SA or WA kid requests a trade home, then there's only 2 clubs in which you can deal with. It makes it much harder to try and get fair and equitable value for the player you are losing.

On the other Hand if a Vic kid requests a trade home from SA or WA, the club has 9 teams to trade with, so they've got more options and much more bargaining power in the trade space to receive fair value.

GWS and GC although they struggle with retention due to being franchise clubs, they also have access to academy players which helps them gain and draft local players, which makes it easier.

The system needs an overhaul regardless, as it effects all clubs (except Geelong cough) so I agree that 1st round draft picks have a minimum 3 year contract. just helps clubs with bargaining power at the trade table.

Agree, the players want more freedom like the US, but only on their terms. A professional athlete in the US goes wherever they go, it would be unusual to hear a player wanting to get back to a club because that's the state or city they come from.

Personally, I'd like even the small change of a player can agree the state, but not the team to give clubs more chance of striking an appropriate trade for the player, instead of being locked into one club. That's a load of bullshit - maybe clubs should look at kids that have been at boarding schools as well as I imagine they'd be more capable of living anywhere.

I've been saying that for years. Nominate a state at the very most. You can't nominate a post code.

Ryder was just a steak knife, we paid up big to get Howard, he pretty much cost a first round pick. We swapped 12 and 18 for pick 10 so for a two place up grade and Howard we gave up pick 18 so that we could over pay for Hill as well.

In: Howard, Ryder, Pick 10
Out: Pick 12, Pick 18

On the totality it was a very deal for us. Howard was in there leadership group and filled a desperate need. Ryder gave us way more than we could've hoped and we still held onto a 1st round pick.

Pick 10 (1395) for 12 & 18 (2253) = a points difference of pick 22. I think that's great value

Gee whiz, we changed over so many draft picks that year. 6 became 12/18 which became 10 which was used to get Hill.

I wouldn’t do anything about kids wanting trades back to their home states at this stage but if it is an increasing problem then the afl should step in. Given two years especially with a want away is too small a sample to be re-rating them I’d suggest if a deal can’t get done between clubs then a simple formula apply. It won’t please everyone but a first straight after your first round pick to the club loosing the player and the loss of the acquiring clubs first round pick.

It will be open to rorts but few afl rules including free agency compo aren’t and pales into insignificance when compared to some father son free hits.

I don’t really understand the push for him to become captain.

Nothing I’ve seen or heard suggests he’s be a better choice than Steele?
Only those inside the club could know, but Wilkie is definitely the better orator, certainly presents himself and the club better to the public too.
Jack is obviously a lead by example leader, which is not all bad. Don’t think either are a bad option really.

Steele is a bit of a Harvs in front of the camera, awkward, nervous & shy. Wilkie is a naturally confident communicator,
which reflects on field too.

I listened to Wilkie this morning and whilst he didn't speak badly, I didn't think he was that great.

You are right though, we'd have no idea from the outside.
Rookie draft defender turned captain remind you of someone else?
I'm not sure where you are drafted or what position you play plays much of a role on leadership

Watch the Wilkie/Howard vid, Its almost like Howard isn't there. And Wilkie has already done huddle talk on the field & the players seemed ensconced in what he had to say.

He is a driver of standards.
