I don't accept any criticism of Charlie. Not to say there's a lot here but from the wider AFL.

You're talking about an undersized KPF (he's below 195cm, small by modern KP standards) playing as the sole tall target inside 50, with some support from TDK*, surrounded by smalls against the best defence of the past handful of years with the best 1-2 KPD combination in the game. He has basically no chance of kicking a bag when they're able to simply double him every contest. The best we can expect from Charlie is to compete and not be beaten to the point where his opponent sets up play. Aside from about 5 minutes vs May he also had very little intercepting impact as did Lever.

He tirelessly competed against hopeless odds and got us the win. He did it last time we played them too. Everyone will praise May for shutting him down, but what forward would single handedly dominate those 2 inside 50 with little to no support? Aside from Curnow not kicking goals, what impact have Lever & May had against us in the last 2 games? Who won both games?

Looks nice to say May is beating Curnow, but I'd argue he's broke even enough that he May has had no impact, with Lever also having little. The results from both games would suggest as much.

(though it has to be said he has little forward craft which we've seen over an extended period of time. 2 goals was a fantastic return but he was far from a consistent inside 50 threat or target after those 2)
If there is a knock on his game he stopped and propped too much and tried to body May which is obviously a low percentage play. There may or may not have been reasons for this. The couple of times he got on his bike he looked more convincing.

He did drop his head at times which people are perhaps reading too much into.

And no, he didn't break even with May. May had a blinder...it's ok to admit it.

Good Chiefy. Good.
You organising a bf Blues catchup or how about a Friday nite game watch for us foreigners?
Recommended venues?
Anyone is welcome to organise something.

Yep, Cuners a likely out, doing little (to allow Mots to stay in).

Bam Bam unlucky, but he ain't going to displace Hewett presently.

Would like Hollands to play a full game too (4 talls down back or more run?)
This is the way I see it, but my question is who goes 'out' (even to sub) to make way? And I like all of Marchbank, Gov and Kemp in defence, along with Weitering, Saad, Newman and Cincotta...

Charlie has to stand up and prove he can deliver when the chips are down. Two poor finals from him, and his lack of effort in the last quarter vs May nearly cost us the game.
Hey Browny, how do you reckon you would go being scragged and manhandled by May? All 105 kilo's of him, pretty much rated the best key back in the league atm, along with Moore.

I didn't say he broke even, I said he broke even enough that he didn't have an impact going the other way via intercepting & setting up from behind. I thought I said that in the post but I didn't, but that's what I meant.

Our fwd line will be rejuvanated with Harry and Martin
We know we can halve contest and clearance.
It will come down to wether our 2nd, 3rd, 4th defenders can hold hipwood, cameron and raynor. Marchbank, newman and Kemp need to go to another defensive level above their play against Melbourne

As good as our team defence has been I’m worried about our back 7 more than others seem to be - I think our weak links are Cincotta, Kemp and Marchbank who aren’t as reliable as the others and haven’t settled enough yet to AFL level. I think Kemp will be best 22 in 2024 but not sure about the other 2.

I don’t have any concerns with our mids and I think are forwards will be great with Harry and Martin back. So it’s our defenders I’m most worried about.

I think we need our pressure forwards to keep the ball as long in our forward 50 as possible and we need our mids to minimise their inside 50s and slow down their inside 50s so that our back 7 can set up.

Agree on the defence but Vossy has them playing a team defence which hopefully covers those perceived weaknesses.

The back 7 is a concern to me too, especially the 3 you mentioned

Also agree that we need to apply sustained pressure in the forward half, so our back 6 can setup better behind the ball for intercepts

Have taken the liberty to start a thread for this discussion to keep it out of the game thread

.
For those who are in Brisbane on Friday evening and would like to have a more relaxed meetup as a watch party for the other prelim rather than a pregame catch up on the Saturday afternoon that also clashes with the club function that some are attending.

You only have to compare the profile of the team when we were winning by 50 points a game to the team of the last 2 finals.

You shouldn't be playing all of Curnow, Mckay, Dekoning & Pitto in the same team. And you shouldn't be playing all of Weitering, Gov, Kemp & Marchbank in the same team.

I understand finals pressure is another level but we have been too stagnate and/or predictable going forward. Back to old habits and relying more on individuals to get us over the line rather team first pressure footy/fast run & carry footy forcing opposition to come at us. Both Swans & Dees set up crowding our forward arc taking uncontested footy throwing everyone out whack. This has not helped Charlie.

We need more runners/overlap players to balance our team. Last week we did have our 2nd & 3rd ranked forwards out.

Having said all the above, it is just my observation and I will back the match committee 100% with their selections & vision because we have about 28 fit players who could do a job.

I’m still recovering from last week and the week before and the week before and the week before and the week before… 🤯

This week is going to tear me to shreds. I have been lurking on the forum for years! Was a member like 10 years ago. I used to make graphics, I used to be BlueGirl91, but couldn’t access that account so I’ve made this new one to join you all. How bloody exciting is this?

I don’t know why I’m introducing myself I feel like I know most of you already… Thy, Aphrodite the list goes on.

I don’t know what to say… I’m nervous. Can you tell?

Let’s go Baggers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome back BlueGirl91, do remember you. Wonderful time to support the Blues, we are back baby, we are back!

It’s interesting to read the commentary on Charlie. It was his second final on Friday night and we’re expecting super performances immediately.

I’m old enough to remember Jezza. Funny thing is Jezza was a slow starter as well and we were wondering whether we’d ever see home and away Jezza in a finals series.

67,68 and 69. 6 games and 9 goals. Acceptable but not Jezzaesque.

Then 70 and 72. 7 games and 30 goals. 72 was the ying and yang in a final series. First 2 finals against Richmond 0 goals. Preliminary and GF 2 bags of 7.

Charlie will have his time but I’m happy with his efforts as he hones his craft.

Brisbane game relies on contest and clearance I wouldn't be surprised if Voss and co make Kennedy sub the keep the heat on for the whole 4 quarters...
I wouldn't be surprised if MK stays but personally think Hollands is our new super sub. Interesting MC ahead.

Doesn't matter though. Back the boys!
