Draper is an interesting one. If you disregard his 1st 3 seasons, where he didn't play a game, he's 24yo coming into his 4th season and is the sole ruck as you mentioned, and priced well. I have a leaning to 4th year players on the improve, although technically it will be his 7th season. He's currently my R2.
He just doesnt do enough around the ground to warrant selection.

Phillips played 10 games last year, how confident are we that that doesn't happen again?

I haven't watched Draper that closely, but very little progression over his 3 seasons. What does he need to do to be worth the risk? 90+?

The odd HTA wouldn't hurt for starters - he has no finesse whatsoever, everything is done like a bull at a gate.

Brad Scott did groom Goldy into something special though, so you'd expect SD to develop significantly this year. The raw talent is pretty exciting, always has been. The guidance has been less than it should have been.

You go out and get a specialist ruck coach with a successful pedigree to get the best out of a talent like Draper.

I'm no expert, but I reckon he should use his foot to kick it rather than his shin, which he seems to do when I've watched him.

Can I invoice Essendon for that coaching tip? :moustache:

Wow, Draper managed to score 6 whole SC points in round 9 last year. TOG 73%. Good luck to anyone brave enough to pick that!

and he also managed 113 v Witts 78%TOG, 102 v Maggies 60%TOG, 108 v Hawks 69%TOG. I guess that's why he's on the improve imo, relatively priced, and he played every game...he's R2 atm but not set in stone.

The sheer joy and surprise on his face whenever he kicks a snag is living proof!

The 31-year-old played a big part in Draper's progression in 2020, mentoring the 22-year-old in a season that saw Draper play his first eight AFL games and be named the club's Lindsay Griffiths Rising Star.

Bellchambers said he was excited to build on his relationship with Draper and the club's entire ruck division.

Nor sure Bellchambers is still there.....he's not listed for 2023 and I can't seem to find a Ruck Coach at the Bombers.....that's not good.;)

Not far of the right number of games and seasons to be ready to take a big step up

Although, having said that, rucks often take longer than players on other lines

There is also the question of the quality of the mids that the ruck is tapping to . . . Zerritt, Parish . . .

Added Grundy to my watchlist, his price is really juicy. The other guys on my list are Marshall, Draper and English. English is more than likely my R1, his concussion and injury are an issue, but until otherwise, ill take him. Marshall same boat, minus the concussions, strong scorer when solo ruck. Draper, one and only ruck, he isnt gonna average 100+ but he will play each week and will score okay. Take out his 6 and 21 he has probably averaged 80 in 2022. Grundy speaks for himself, he cant play forward, Gawn is capable of taking a big grab and kicking goals, if Gawn goes down with an injury Grundy will be straight in.

And ill grab some s**t kent 102k ruc/fwd

Keep going back to this ruck setup. I think I’ll sleep better at night with this starting duo.
Witts with Miller, Rowell and Anderson at his feet plus another pre season at the Suns. The team has to improve in 2023.
Grundy is just value for money and the bonus, a better midfield around him now.
I feel it’s a safer bet too considering the ruck carnage of last year.

gold coast bye doesnt worry you? in other positions it can be easily covered. without cameron to swing into ruck youre already one whole player down during that bye

Having Witts I could end up a player down 100%. My plan ‘hopefully' would be to get say Cameron traded in before the byes into the forward line OR another player gains Ruck/Forward status after Rd6. This way I move him to the rucks and bring in a fwd rookie off the bench in the bye round.
In a positive, I have a POD in the ruck department till Rd13 and I’m betting he’ll be a top 1-3 ruck by seasons end, barring injuries 🫰

You have to plan for Gawn to get FWD / RUCK status & a Price Drop, after Round 6

Happy he-is-the chosen-one.gif

Grundy is one I keep coming back to for some reason.
Wouldn't be a ceiling pick, but seems like he'd perform to / above priced value if he gets enough time around the ball.
Got Marshall + D Cameron for now, guess that will be a pretty popular combo at this stage.

I can't bring myself to select Grundy yet. Too much unknown.

I've got English + Marshall + Madden, with Cameron in my FWD line. Thinking here is I can loop Cameron in if an injury hits the RUC line for 1-2 weeks.

If Grundy is the man at Melb, I will be making a change. Like you say, the value he presents if playing is too good to ignore.
