I remember reading somewhere McStay gf also landed work etc in some Melbourne law firm (may be Pies did something in the background) during the move. I don't think he was staying even if we ponyed up.

Allens; they have offices in every capital so surely we could have pulled some strings to get the GF in a top tier firm

Also why he would want to return to Hawthorn when they didn’t want him 12 months ago. They’re a fair bit better than they were then as well. I suppose if you’re going to be playing VFL you might as well go to the city you want to live in

"Mitchell did however admit Gunston, who moved to Brisbane as a free agent, was “the one we’re really missing” given the void he leaves in attack, revealing the Hawks told him they were “desperate” to keep him.

“(He’s) the one player we really wanted to keep — and we understand why he left and were really open with the dialogue with him,” he said.

“He’s the one we’re really missing, because (with) our forward line, we’re not able to score as well as we’d like at the moment."

Suns have delisted 5 so far, let's say they manage to trade Elijah for pick 26 to Carlton - that leaves them with 7 picks already between 24 and 38. I'll make a guess that they'll delist/rookie one more to use the first 7 picks. So their later 2 picks at 62, 66 may not be useful already.

Similarly Western bulldogs will lose 40,48,53 for Jordan Croft. That's another 3 picks.

We have 47,51,61,67 is equivalent to pick 25. If our 61 comes in by 3 picks it'll be 58 and 67 coming forward by 5 picks is 62. In the end a draft hand of 47,51,58,62 is equivalent to pick 22.

We can get any of 24, 27 or 28 off them in live trade.

One thing to note about Mitch is that he's a very cunning operator and if he really wanted Gunston to stay I'd be surprised.

And even more surprised if he takes him back.

A year ago gunston - coming off 32 goals in 16 games with a dud side, no contract. Just turned 31yo but seemed to have recovered well from a bad back and looked to have 2-3 years left

Today gunston - 22 goals in 17 games, 6 goals v west coast. Turns 32 and had to do a training block to get back in to the side. $500k contract

We will get an irrelevant pick and have to pay some of his salary

If he is desperate to go and no deal happens he should either retire or be willing to become a 2s player / 1s coach. If it’s true we are going after a more senior assistant coach to replace the 2 who have left this makes sense. Asking someone to do a bit of coaching on the side for $500k is entirely reasonable

Our Hawks recruiting strategy should have stopped at Luke Hodge... in hindsight Birchall and Gunston were mistakes and we would have been better off getting time into our younger guys.
