Would be more behind the scenes stuff with Gunston. Partner, lifestyle, role etc. many factors at play especially at 31.
Pretty sure from memory he split with a long-term partner, along with his father passing, which some were suggesting was the catalyst for the move North. Who knows, maybe they rekindled their romance and this is a contributing factor to him wanting to move back. I think those suggesting it's because he played VFL and is spitting the dummy are well off the mark. The "shock" element to the Lions being blind sided feels more like an emotionally driven decision, not form/role related.

IMO >

Hodge - Masterstroke.

Birchall - Fair.

Gunston -

I've been against Gunston playing in the ones, but four years ago would have been wonderful.

Arrived just as our own players emerged and fulfilled that leadership role.

I don't buy into all the hand wringing about the club transferring Gunston in. As others have said, he didn't cost much and it was a shot to (almost) nothing.
Understand also he had personal stuff going on at the time and wanted to be out of Melbourne.

But, a bit annoyed about how this trade request has come about, if what's reported is to be believed. To throw in a transfer request half way through trade week, without giving anyone the heads up, while overseas on holidays.
I dunno, maybe it's accepted that this is the way things happen in footy, but in any other industry you would be seriously burning bridges by carrying on like that.
I have left jobs in the past for different reasons that were beneficial to my family (including moving interstate) but have kept people within company informed so they could plan for this as best they could.
That's what he sort of did when he left Adelaide initially and got to Hawks. Nothing new here.

I don’t believe for one moment that Gunston or his manager had not spoken to Hawthorn about the possibility of moving back home for the 2024 season. Gunston is a professional and knows how the system works so their must have been conversations in the past about his options for the 2024 season. The Hawks are losing one developing key position player and Gunston can be a stop gap for next year. It is hard to find and then develop key position players it takes time and very few have an impact straight away. I don’t mind whether he stays or goes as we dont have ready made players to replace either Daniher or Hipwood if they get an injury. My preference is that he stays as we are in the premiership window and need a full squad of talented players to win a grand final. Next year we will have a new strategy coach so who knows what that will bring.

Had high hopes for Gunners when we got him but in hindsight we would have been better off ponying up to keep Mcstay
I remember reading somewhere McStay gf also landed work etc in some Melbourne law firm (may be Pies did something in the background) during the move. I don't think he was staying even if we ponyed up.

As we have all said we are now in need of at least 1, if not 2 experienced KPP (especially KPF’s) this offseason somehow.

I mentioned Tim O’Brien, James Stewart etc yesterday.

Is there anyone else who would be a decent stop gap already in the system? The guy from the GC, I believe kicked 50+ goals although I’m not sure if he was true KP size? Hammelmann mentioned obviously but is there any others in the state leagues, who people on here may know more about?

Confirmation.

Maybe I’m stupid, but why have we decided to get this trade done today with the news of Gunston possibly going back to Hawthorn.

Better hope we get another key-forward in the trade or draft table otherwise we might be screwed if injuries occur to Daniher or Hipwood.

He's out of contract.

Definitely should be asking the question to Brodie McLaughlin now, similar size to Jack Gunston, leading goals over in past 2 VFL seasons and would fit beautifully with Daniher and Hipwood as our 3rd key forward.

I think once someone has made a decision to move on, it’s pretty hard to change one’s mind, even if circumstances change at the team they’re currently at.

My frustration is with Jack. Not only did we get nothing from him on field, but if you believe Edmund & even our club statement, the fact he didn’t bring this up until recently may have jeopardised any chance of filling his spot for next year. Seems a bit selfish to me from the “king”.

Well if a trade cannot be done and Gunston stays, he's shot himself in the foot. What incentive do we have to play him after this when a spot in the top 23 was already tenuous at best?

I actually really hope we stick with the two talls and four smalls line up as that is a strength for us.

I know zilch about McLaughlin, height of a 3rd tall... ideally we need Rayner to improve his endurance substantially over the off season and play greater midfield minutes and McLaughlin could play Rayner's 2023 role.

Is he good defensively is what I would like to know... anyone??
