My spreadsheet :)

With now Luko, Atkins out and Rioli, Noble, Himmelberg in and assuming Lombard drafted and Clohesy and Uwland upgraded from rookie list - that's 37 players on senior list, no Cat A rookies, 2 Cat B rookies.

12 players gone (Ace could come back).
So that means room for one more on the Primary List (THE SCRIPT IS BEING FOLLOWED)

See you all again on the Coasty Thread

So do we have 34 players on our senior list right now then?

If so that means we could only take 4 selections to the draft (39,49,51,61)

So we’d lose 70 & 76. That’s not too bad, we’d still be able to match from Pick 6, but pick 5 would make us go into deficit

Yes, right now 34 players on senior list. I thought it was clear, haha. Uwland must be upgraded. Clohesy could stay on rookie list.

Leigh Montana says: “They now have to play finals with what they’ve got; they go from the toys to the trophies now. I really like what they’ve done. They targeted specific players for specific roles that Damien Hardwick wants in his system. They didn’t need those picks early in this draft, they don’t need any more talented kids – they’ve got a stack of them. They need some senior players, that are ready to take them to the next level. They’re still going to get a top 10-15 player in Leo Lombard, an Academy kid (and) they’re going to get two top 10 Academy kids in next year’s draft – so it doesn’t matter that they didn’t use these (higher) picks.”

David King says: “He’ll (Rioli) bring some arrogance to this football club; a club that needs to work on their ball movement – there’s still plenty of scope for improvement. I think this is a fantastic acquisition at the absolute right time.”

Jon Ralph says: Daniel Rioli is exactly what the want in terms of their system … you bring him and Noble in, I just think it works so well.”

A 2 year look at things

In: Walter, Read, Rogers, Graham, Clohesy, Rioli, Noble, Himmelberg, Lombard, 2 Future 1st

Out Chol, Hollands, Sharp, Burgess, Lukosius, Atkins
Pick 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 23, 29

Assign each of the picks to the 5 academy kids

Essentially have turned
Chol, Hollands, Sharp, Burgess, Lukosius, Atkins, 23, 29
Into
Rioli, Noble, Clohesy, Himmelberg, ZUwland, Addinsall

Claps to Cameron and claps to the AFL for this system. Just don’t take it away from us when we start winning

Love when someone see’s the bigger picture. Individually trades can look like we have been done dry, but when you step back and see what we have, you can’t help but applaud.

It’s like a game of chess. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice a few pieces for the greater good!

Do people think we didn’t get value ?
We got everything we wanted didn’t we?
I’m torn on losing Luko but he was sucking up superstar dollars with B grade output
I’m listening if there’s a different perspective but the two biggest names to move this trade period were Houston and Rioli and we got one of them
That’s us- the Suns
Guys- we have a Rioli kitting up for us next year
The rest is just cheese

The whole picture is great. Last year we brought in 5 quality academy kids (I also count Clohesy) thanks to pick 4 overs. This year, we improved list as much as we could with two players under contract, we got points for Lombard and secured additional 2 F1 picks for more academy talent next year.

I thought trade with Magpies and Port was a very good one. To be able off-loading Atkins still shocks me. Luko is a high talent, but Dimma decided he is a surplus and does not fit into his plan (probably correct decision). Not paying part of his salary is great (if true). I listened to Luko agent and Luko will play as a centre forward for Port. I expect 40+ goals. Good luck to him. I hope people will not boo him. He wanted to stay.

Replacing tall depth Day and Casboult with Himmelberg seems fine.

We could probably hold on and trade only pick 6 for Rioli. That's where a lot of people go ballistic on us while ignoring under contract context, our situation.

Would additional future pick from potential pick 23 trade help us next year? Having 3 F1 picks seem enough. One or two of them could be traded for overs again.

Can we play finals and get a top gun during next trade period? Can we re-sign Rowell?

In a perfect world we would of traded out pick 6 day one and removed it from the conversation but overall as some have said if you look at the trades in totality and our best 22 next year it’s very exciting. If this team can’t win then we are cursed.

New guernsey, less Maccas and more sleek is the final puzzle piece

There’s always the unknowns though like injuries, VFL Umpires, scandals and the tribunal.
So for me just for my own sanity (been supporting GC Teams in all sports since the 1980s) I like to not have expectations.
Trust In Dimma (and Des) and let it unfold

The football world has finally wised up to the Gold Coast Suns’ list building strategy but after Wednesday’s deadline day trades, is it too late to stop them?
Last week the Suns were being laughed at for even contemplating trading picks 6 and 23 to Richmond for Daniel Rioli. But by the time the deal was formally struck on Wednesday afternoon, their master plan was clear.

Richmond and Carlton may have ‘won’ the trade period by bolstering their 2024 draft hands, but Gold Coast now has almost all the capital it needs to stockpile Suns Academy talent for the next two years – while also adding established running defenders Rioli and John Noble in the process.

The Suns successfully cleared cap space by jettisoning Jack Lukosius and Rory Atkins, while adding two 2025 first-round picks to go with their own.

Those picks will be pivotal this time next year when prospective No. 1 selection Zeke Uwland, brother to breakout Suns defender Bodhi Uwland, is on the board – alongside fellow Suns Academy talent Beau Addinsall.

And that is all without mentioning Leo Lombard, the uber-agile mid-forward who looks ready-made for an AFL start after two years within the Suns’ VFL program.

The should-be top-15 pick will join the AFL list next month thanks to the draft points the Suns accumulated to match a bid on Lombard at or after pick 7/8, all the while ticking the rest of their trade period boxes in the process.

Essentially, the Suns’ trade period ends with two best-23 inclusions (Rioli and Noble), a top-15 talent in Lombard – to come in November – and the draft capital required to add another two Suns Academy first-rounders in 2025.

Predicted Gold Coast Suns Best-23 in 2025

FB: Uwland, Collins, Andrew
HB: Rioli, Ballard, Powell
C: Weller, Anderson, Clohesy
HF: Flanders, Walter, Humphrey
FF: Long, King, Ainsworth
FOL: Witts, Rowell, Miller
IC: Noble, Lombard, Rogers, Graham, Holman

Lukosius and Atkins were never in Damien Hardwick’s plans for next year and there is now roughly $1.3m of extra cap space at the Suns’ disposal after they were sent to Port Adelaide.

In 2023, Gold Coast drafted four Suns Academy stars in a first-round draft coup and by the end of next November could have added six – perhaps seven – players from its pathway program over a three-year period.

For years the victim of a system that allowed top-end talent to leave for greener pastures, the Suns pivoted to cultivating homegrown players and are finally starting to see the pay-off.

Assuming Lombard arrives next month as expected, Gold Coast will enter 2025 with 13 Suns Academy graduates on its list. Many of those would be considered best-23 players and if not, are expected to become such over the course of the season.

It is a list strategy years in the making, long before it first hit the football public’s consciousness last year when Jed Walter, Ethan Read, Jake Rogers and Will Graham were drafted out of the first round.

While the majority of AFL club list managers are based in Melbourne, Craig Cameron relocated to the Gold Coast to be closer to the Suns Academy once the decision was made to go chips-in on the in-house talent pathway.

“It means I get to understand the talent coming through both the men’s and women’s pathways,” Cameron told this masthead earlier this year.

“I’m able to build strong relationships with our academy coaches which is really important.

“Last year we took four academy players (in the draft). That’s not going to happen every year, but our aim is to build out the percentage of our list as local talent as much as we can.”

For the second straight year, the Suns have ticked all their boxes in the lead-up to the draft.

But for all the successful wheeling and dealing, the fact remains premierships are not won in the off-season.

The onus is now on Hardwick and his coaching staff to harness the talent at its disposal and finally deliver a maiden finals berth for the no-longer-fledgling franchise.

It’s easy to sh*t on the club for a lot of things, but it was an elite decision to go all in on the academy considering how unknown it was wether it would be any sort of success (especially considering how the club has gone at executing any plans so far in their existence) and not just a huge waste of money, or that the AFL would just snap ban academy picks, and they have absolutely nailed it. I am surprised Brisbane/GWS have still yet to really take advantage of it. If we can just recreate the academy infrastructure in the AFL and AFLW programs, we’d have a team of elite cyborgs running around each week.

I suspect major change came with pick concessions. Before that we spent peanuts on academy. I still remember Cochrane talking about 250K per year. I would love to know how much money is spent now on academy.
