I returned my two complimentary member tickets for the Giants game once it became clear that I was not going to go, given the limited access to other games and cost involved for one game wasn't really worthwhile.

Not sure if everyone knew that was an option but I'd rather return my ticket and have someone else go than have tickets not be utilised.

Can’t remember it this is 100% correct but believe it was 45,970 on the scoreboard tonight.

However, level 5 was very sparse tonight and reckon there were no more than 40K in attendance for the Carlton Fremantle game.

Very poor crowd at the Adelaide Hills venue today looks like even less than last year I would suggest.

I just don't get it if ALL the tickets to ALL matches have supposedly been sold why do so many people waste their money and NOT bother turn up?
Hey I have very cheap bridge for sale!

I still think the AFL in the future would be better off having Gather Rounds in NSW and QLD and promote our national game there instead just taking SAs money.
You've got to remember that many of those vacant seats in those temporary stands were patrons who moved to stand on the terraces.

I was there at Mt Barker yesterday. Alot of the people with Grandstand tickets moved to the standing terrace or the hill as the game went on.
There was actually one less grandstand compared last year which helped have a bit more 'hill' seating.

Another explanation is that the AFL are telling porkies about all tickets to all games being sold.
Maybe but I still cannot believe tens of thousands of people deliberately buy tickets and don't bother to turn up!

Maybe if this is the truth the AFL and their ticket sellers should instigate the Airline policy and over sell the venues 5% - 8 % so to maximise the crowd and what about all that extra cash a policy like this would generate?

thats a terrible idea.

They can't just lock the gates once the event starts when it reaches its "full" limit. For one, you would be rightly pissed if you have a ticket and can't get in.. two, the people manning the gate will have no idea what the current attendance would be. Everything may be online now, and updated real-time, but messages take time. And how would you police this? Would reserve seats still get in?

And three. health and safety and comfort levels. It sucks sitting on the hill and you can't sit down because it is too crowded. Been there, done that.

You have to consider that these are temp venues. You will get to know the safe capacity through time and experience. I have no idea what members were allowed but that can be another factor.

It is not worth the time, customer experience or money to implement to get a slightly larger crowd. The AFL doesn't think fixing Marvel's sub 50K crowds is worth it.

For some reason the AFL have stopped posting the crowd figures maybe they have forgotten how to count?.

I'm NOT talking about the temporary grounds but ALL AFL stadiums around the nation none of which seems to get anywhere near full although the AFL constantly bragging they are sellouts as I said I doubt in tight economic times tens of thousands of fans weekly are wasting their hard earned and not bothering to turn up or most of the stated stadium capacities are BS!

So Gather Round 2024 has clocked in at 267,643 (according to AFL Tables).

Gather Round 2023 got to 268,287.

Difference between this year and last:
  • 18,462 at Norwood in 2024 v 18,386 in 2023
  • 2 games at Mount Barker for 18,562 (avg 9,281) v one game of 7,329 last year
  • 230,619 at Adelaide Oval from 5 games (avg 46,128) v 242,572 from 6 games (avg 40,429)
  • Double header this year given same crowd for both games, different crowds recorded for each game of the 2 double headers last year.
So the average for each ground went up, the crowd for both the Adelaide and the Port Adelaide games was slightly up and they structured it to manage to basically match the same attendances with one less Adelaide Oval game. That's a tick from an organisational point of view.

I am talking about every ground as well.

It not as simple as people buying tickets and not turning up. You have reserved seat members, ga members, and ground memberships. Other allocations such as sponsors and other clubs. These pay big money for certain privileges. If it is a new stadium, you also don't really know what number you can cater comfortably or how many will turn up.

The AFL(or stadiums and clubs) don't care. They get money from these sources and they are more important than the average Joe or getting a slightly higher number.

A Medallian Club Docklands seat costs around $10k per year for the AFL. If it was more easily resold, than they couldn't artificially hike up the price for something that individuals don't tend to purchase (as it tends to be corporate purchasing).

It's not unique to Australia. If you isolate a minority of games, you'd be able to find plenty of empty seats everywhere. NBA teams flog tickets for the cost of processing in years that they're not going to make the playoffs.

What a flipping joke Richmond playing at a 10k max capacity stadium while all the other big clubs play at a 50k stadium. Crowd figures never going to fair with fixturing; add to the shit Sunday timeslots we've been given, going up against the Grand Prix, Easter Sunday and now playing at Norwood holding 10k, joke.

S..t happens. Essendon, and Carlton in previous seasons been carrying the can of the big clubs in crap slots in smaller venues. The Tigers had a charmed run with the fixture on the back of a fabulous era on field. The era is over, everything balances again somewhat over time.
