Fremantle will likely overtake Richmond and Finish in the top 4 for home crowds.

Considering they will likely finish out of the eight they have to be the strongest performer of the year overall.

Freo’s crowds have been fantastic - however judging them on missing the finals does ignore that they’ve spent nearly the whole year in the 8.

Weeks spent in the 8:

Sydney - 23
Port, GWS, Geelong - 22
Carlton - 21
Freo - 18
Essendon - 15
Melbourne - 12
Brisbane - 8
Bulldogs, Collingwood - 7
Gold Coast - 5
Hawthorn - 2
All others - 0

One round to go and the AFL only needs just over 21k to break the overall attendance record set last year.

Probably more importantly, we need around 204k to finish with the highest average in the league's history (or around 240k to account for the double header). The current record was set way back in 2008 before the introduction of GC and GWS.

Both should be achieved, although there is a distinct lack of big games and Round 24 will probably end up as the lowest full round for the year.

Adelaide, Carlton, GWS, Hawthorn and Sydney are already sitting on record season totals with Freo, Melbourne and possibly GC to join them. Collingwood is also theoretically possible but needs 71k from their dead rubber.

Dogs game vs. GWS this week has already been sold out in Ballarat. Fairly certain no Ballarat game has exhausted its capacity for standing on the grass yet (though I believe we have come close to within a hundred or so tickets in the past), so for it to happen vs. a team with minimal away support and this early in the week, as opposed to the day of the game or whatever is good, despite a few frustrated Dogs fans.

Crowd will probably be over 11,000, beating the old record of 10,412 last year. which is in far contrast to crowds of less than 7,000 in its second year in 2018.

AFL SET TO BREAK HIGHEST EVER ALL TIME ATTENDANCE RECORD

The AFL is thrilled to announce that 7,456,274 fans have so far attended the 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership Season to date ahead if this week’s last round of the home and away season.

It is anticipated the all-time attendance record 7,475,146 will be surpassed at Friday nights MCG match between Melbourne and Collingwood.

Round 23, marked the 16th time this season we've seen more than 300,000 fans flock to stadiums. The most ever in a single season. The previous record was set in 2023, with 15 rounds recording more than 300,000 fans.

Round 23 saw the highest South Australia Showdown crowd in the past eight seasons (since Round 3, 2017). It also marked Port Adelaide's third highest all-time AFL home and away season crowd. It saw the Gold Coast SUNS mark their highest home crowd vs Melbourne in over a decade and a second highest ever against the Demons. Hawthorn continues to look towards a finals appearance marking their best home crowd against Richmond in nearly a decade (66,305, Round 18, 2015).

As we look to Round 24, Friday night's Melbourne v Collingwood clash at the MCG is tipped to bring our total attendance to more than 7.7. million across the season coinciding with Kids Go Free matches in Victoria for the entire Round 24.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said as we edge closer towards the end of the home and away season, fans are ready for a huge September.

“Whilst this will be the final weekend of the season for some clubs, the race to the final eight is as close as it has ever been, and we look forward to the thrilling crescendo on Sunday,” Mr Dillon said.

“Season 2024 has been one of biggest in our games history - All-time record membership, largest broadcast and digital numbers on record, some of the closest footy ever, and now the all-time attendance record in our sights come Friday.”

“On behalf of the AFL I want to thank all the fans who have engaged with our game so far this season and barracked for their club’s week in and week out.”

With opening round played outside Victoria, I would love to see a ‘Round 1’ designed for the highest possible total crowd, and see if we can hit half a million.
Blues v Tigers 85k
ESS v Hawks 75k
Pies v Saints 75k
Melb v Cats 60k
Dogs v Nth 35k
Swans v Freo 40k
WC v GWS 50k
Crows v CG 40k
Lions v Port 35k

A couple possible crowd records for individual match-ups to keep an eye on this week:

Largest H&A Geelong home game crowd vs West Coast: 33,905 at Waverley Park in 1991. (28k largest at Kardinia).
Tickets for this week’s game seem on track to be mostly sold out by Saturday, so hopefully 35-39k show up.

Largest H&A Fremantle home game crowd vs Port: 41,326 in 2022.
Freo have averaged nearly 47k this year, but this game could be a dead rubber by the time it starts which could deter members. This crowd could be dependant on the Bulldog’s result and how the score in the Carlton game is looking by halftime.

Richmond would’ve beaten their 38k record vs Gold Coast if Dusty had a farewell game, but don’t think this is likely now.

Friday night looks like it's going to be very average (and expectedly so). Sales across all 3 reserves indicate a 48-52k type crowd. Free kids tickets to have little affect for a Friday night game you would think.
Thanks for this info. Both teams not in finals contentions and Dees fans have been disengaged too for a while now so it makes sense.

Saints v Blues should be a big roll up you would think!

Remember back when it was sold to Essendon fans when moving to marvel that any game that would get over 52k would be moved to the mcg? It has never happened in 24 years, so was basically a lie.

That blues v saints game would get at least 70k if relocated to the mcg.

Essendon should only play interstate at Marvel
All the melbourne clubs (and really the AFL) needs to move to a demand based scheduling system. Problem is, that would leave most interstate teams without any games at the G which you can't do unless you ratate the GF around the country (which it should, but that's a separate discussion). Third stadium of ~30-35k would help too (in Gosch's Paddock) for those really small games.

Amazes me how they change games tomorrow to reduce overlap for foxtel, but won’t move them to ensure more people get to see their team.

You mean like moving our home games back to Geelong so our members can see the boys play?

Everything is decided by money, and for once it was your club that got ****ed over.

You mean like moving our home games back to Geelong so our members can see the boys play?

Everything is decided by money, and for once it was your club that got ****ed over.

50% of your membership base is from outside of the greater Geelong area.

Your club choose to play home games at the MCG ala Easter Monday and Collingwood games but don’t let the facts stand in the way of a good story.

Tell me which final lives rent free in your head? It must have been 2017, as 2019 was our home prelim.

Looks like this year will get the highest average ever, I think this is a good thing for our culture fighting against the tide of globalisation

Looking at the numbers it's interesting that 2008 was a peak and took a decade to reach again, GFC impact?

It was the introduction of GC and GWS which declined crowds. Plus, after 2008, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda and Melbourne started playing more games outside of Melbourne, which played a factor too.
